He's talking about the state and local levels, not the federal level.

The rich guy and I both pay a 7% sales tax for a steak at the local grocery store. We eat the same amount of steak. Ergo, the rich guy pays a lot less as a percentage of his income than I do.

The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy is correct.

I bet you can prove that poor people spend a bigger percentage of their earnings on toilet paper than rich people do, too.

    yawn.

    correct

I believe the solution is not just taxation

We all should have a card which we must swipe at stores

For example, the gallon of milk that I buy might cost me $10 but another, lower earning person pays 5 cents and the person who earns more than me pays $100

we must have govt mandate price fairness and not that we all pay the same price, but we pay what is within our means. How else can we ensure that we lower the standard of living for those who have worked to succeed?

that is the role of govt in a progressive and enlightened society, isn't it?

Have others pay for the government and nation which you demand...I guess this is the New American...

And what is your solution to your 7% sales tax on steaks?

In bold above, as a business owner selling milk, you could manage your business with your pricing system??

    that is irrelevant

From each according to his ability, to each according to his need

how else can we reach utopia and fairness?

There is nothing new about it and only a naive fool would believe otherwise.

From its founding until the 1920s the Federal government gained its revenue from land sales, excise taxes on booze and import duties. Teetotallers, people who already owned land, and those who bought only domestic goods had everyone else paying for the government and the nation that they demanded for over 150 years.

If you are to blame anyone for the income tax blame the teetotallers because they are the ones who agreed to the income tax amendment in return for the prohibition amendment.

The income tax was never intended to tax all income but only excess income. In fact, in the first year of the income tax only one person had enough income to require the payment of income tax. Anyway, all employees contribute 15% of their wages in FICA tax, half paid by their employer, half directly from their wages with the entire 15% paid by the self employed. This is the same tax rate that the wealthy pay on their capital gains income from gambling in the markets, income which is exempt from FICA.

You are barking up the wrong tree. The poorest have their income taxed by the Federal government at exactly the same rate as the wealthiest.
