Why do you say this is not likely to happen... I understand your example, I agree with your example of thats how employers act... but that does NOT mean they will simply pay the employee overtime now... IT DOES NOT...

in your example... I was paying that employee $9.60 an hour, assuming your 60 hour work week, and $30,000 annual salary... so clearly this is a low skilled employee or a depressed wage area, so paying someone less than that, is likely to get me the same skill level of employee...

if I pay that employee over-time it would cost me $15,000 more per year for time and a half... so now I have a base cost of $45,000 for this "manager"... lets be honest, no company is going to pay this employee this much... I think we can both agree on that...

so now as an employer, I will fire my "manager" and hire two guys who I pay $9.60 an hour... each guy now works 29.99 hours since I won't let them hit 30... now I end up paying $30,000 a year for the two employees working just under 30 hours each... thats not $30,000 each, thats $30,000 COMBINED....

SO now I get the exact same result I did before with two employees that I did with 1 employee... so what changed? I didn't let any of them work 30 hours a week, so now I don't have to pay for healthcare and a lot of other benefits since NEITHER of the employees are full-time now... so I just saved myself thousands and thousands of dollars in costs associated with that employee... so as an employer I just saved money by getting rid of my manager who was going to get overtime...

I'm still paying the same hourly wage... but now I save thousands from full-time benefit costs...

So how does in your scenario the employee come out ahead... he'll still need to get a second job, to get more than 30 hours to cover his bills, he'll still be making the SAME hourly wage based on a 60 hour schedule... but now the employee has no healthcare from the employer and must get dumped onto the healthcare marketplace... costing that employee more money than it did before under the employer... now the employee has no benefits from his employers as he's only part-time...

    how does your guy win?

do you honestly think employers will just keep paying the $30,000 and only make him work 40 hours? or do you honestly think employers will pay overtime above and beyond the $30,000 salary? do you honestly believe that?!?!?!

Increase the cost of doing the work in the United States and some percentage of the jobs will be moved overseas. Then the people who thought it was a good idea will start crying, as they always do, and blaming the wrong people, as they always do.

So, if all we need to do really well is to scale down wages to Chinese levels, or perhaps those of Bangladesh, then all would be well? Do you really believe that?

No, then we'd be able to export goods, and money would be flowing back into the American economy, instead of the other way around.

The real answer is the break our trade treatys, and start charging tarrifs for imported goods.

Obama and pals wont do that, instead they advocate for more trade treatys, to make matters worse.

Its really all part of obamas plan to make America equal to third world countries, instead of doing his job and protecting America.

He's actually talking about the real world and how this will happen, not Obama's fantasy land...

    The world's labor IS HERE.

You need to repeal containerized shipping and free world wide telecommunication.

O.M.G. You really are such a naïf. So, why aren't the average people in Bangladesh just rolling in money if what you say is true? If you think about it, what YOU (and Republicans) want is to take us down to third world status with the country run by a few oligarchs at the top, not Obama. My goodness. Sick your head up above that bridge you're living under and taka a good look around.

Well, if we repeal container shipping, how exactly do we get our good to the rest of the world? And world wide telecommunication is here and has been for some time. If you get a chance, pick up a copy of Tom Friedman's book, The World is Flat to see what I mean.

China is rolling in money, they dont need the handouts, and America can no longer afford to support environmental terrorists.

Obama and pals run the country, not some rich dudes.

He needs to grow a pair, and just say "no"

So you have a problem with telling business they have to pay a fair wage but no problem with enforcing protectionism and market isolationism that prevent businesses from having international customers.

Obama and the Democrats economic policies have resulted in LESS than 2% mean GDP growth rate since he took office. Why wouldn't his overtime policy fail too?

    No thats just dumb.

I have no problem with US business selling things to foreign businesses, in fact, I want more of that, not less.

The problems start when other countries dont practice fair trade and products produced by US businesses are taxed when they are imported, thus pricing American goods out of foreign markets.

This is something that is going to have very little impact on reality.

The Government is not supposed to interfere in the Free Market this way. This is Socialism / Authoritarianism. If we want to take care of our workers then Democrats like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama should not be pushing through trade laws which bring in cheap foreign labor like NAFTA and this new Asian Trade Agreement they are forcing through.

This is going to hurt business, employment, and jobs.

Oh, right, let's just ignore the blatant misuse and abuse of the employee by employers who (*)(*)(*)(*)-push nonsense like "salaried" as if it's some form of benefit, when really it's just a way for big biz and crony capitalists to leverage more work for less pay.

Let's ignore the 120 work weeks put in by some folks for a 40 hour a week paycheck.

Oh, but I know the solution - get another job. Bogus deflectionary BS. There ARE no other jobs for a lot of folks.

This country has the most backwards and idiotic "worker protection" laws ever devised, and we have one group to thank for that - "conservative" con artists who deceive the nation and forcefeed us some baloney about constitutionality each time their donors (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) about the bottom line.

    Hilarity.

Yes we should get rid of the 40 hour week and make all overtime voluntary by the employer. If he says your work day is now 15 hours and no OT then be happy you're living in a free country

Or they hire more people and keep them on part time, which, kinda is exaclty what has happened the last few years. Then those people continue to suck the government teat cause they have no valuable skills.

    Where have you been?

    - - - Updated - - -

Don't want to be salary? Go work somewhere else.

What part of that is confusing to you?

More BS. This is going to do nothing but force employers to PAY FOR WORK PRODUCED, something that is seemingly alien to the backtrotting Randists who have zero clue about modern economics and jobs markets.

Instead, we allow employers to create fictionalized status for select employees, and then hold themn hostage with ridiculous hours demanded and the ever present threat of job loss.

Get another job - that's the only solution we hear from backward thinking conservatives, who will outright deny that the status of worker protection laws in this country are WORSE then some third world countries - yet we're some beacon of hope? What a malignant pile of dung.

We need real worker protection laws that removes the ability of employers to prey on employees with bogus nonsense "salary positions". If anything does MORE HARM to the family unit, something conservatives LOVE to claim the liberal base has been dismantling for decades, it's "career." Career, especially salaried "career" positions which require long hours, are detrimental to the family and benefit ONLY the employer. There is ZERO benefit for the employee.

I am good with that too... except that the Democrats and establishment Republicans have imported a ton of cheap foreign labor.

I guess you missed the part where I pre-empted this BS argument. "go work somewhere else" may work in an economy where jobs flourish, but there are none.

So what's your solution then? It's quite clear you have none, clinging instead to the detritus of conservative sound bite nonsense and non arguments.

Does " go work somewhere else" apply to people who (*)(*)(*)(*)(*) about having to join a union as s condition of employment?

Then make the min wage $5,000,000 per year and lets all buy all kinds of (*)(*)(*)(*).

    - - - Updated - - -

    It could.

Unions should be outlawed. But if you don't want to deal with a union, don't work there.

YOU HAVE A CHOICE WHERE YOU WORK. IF YOU DON'T HAVE A CHOICE, ITS PROBABLY BECAUSE YOU ARENT VALUABLE TO ANYONE ELSE.

    What's your point?

I know, its a hard concept to grasp but, believe it or not, YOU can control your life choices.

    Crazy right?
