This weekend we went upta camp as we say in Maine! Our young neighbors and their friends were partying as most of do in our 20's at about 9:45 they thought it would be fun to scare the crap out us old farts and light what sounded like friggin bomb in the yard. We also do the fireworks thing and it is very loud but we also put up a few signs and call our neighbors , well these kids did not , they also waited until late because it is not allowed after 10PM .
My female Westie bolted and was gone , we went looking at first but it was raining and we hoped she would return , I got up several times through the night and call out for her and whistled like I always do , as the night passed into day we formed several search parties and place signs up all over the back roads along the pond , hardly anyone goes down these road but we figured it was worth a try. we looked till about 8 AM went back for breakfast and then back out till around 2 PM . It was hot and humid and the bugs were very hungry we finally excepted that she was gone and we may never see her again , we packed and grabbed our other Westie and headed out , we got to Liberty Maine when my Aunt called and a lady had been hiking in a remote area 17 miles from our camp and seen Little Bonnie on a small island in a large brook looking very tired , she had a friends dog with her so she headed back to their house to return the old boy and she was going back to get Bonnie , she was travelling down our camp road and see a couple of ladies she knew and talked about the little white dog on the island and the ladies said here is a sign these people had put up , she called the number and got directions went and led the rescue. We had turned around and was heading there , when we arrived we saw the cars parked so we called and my cousins wife said the had coaxed her to swim across the brook again and she did but pretty much collapsed after , dirty and tired she was carried out by them and she was reunited with Mom and Dad and big brother Bailey she has slept a lot but seems to being well!
I guess the point is please watch your pets around fireworks and please respect your neighbors and Thank God for people who care!! Subby

Glad to hear that you were able to find her! I hope those kids learned a lesson.

I'm so happy you went through the work to put out the signs. Made a huge difference. 17 miles is a huge distance. She's a lucky girl.

Perhaps not in the middle of the boonies, but it also usually a good idea to call your shelter first and not wait days. That way they can at least be on the look out. Happened a few months ago. I gave my friend hell on FB for not contacting the shelter when she had just been looking some and waiting so she finally relented and sure enough, her doggie was on death row when she got there. Had she waited another day, it would have been too late.

It is a supply vs. room thing. My little city gets something like 12K cats and 7K dogs per year go through it

A story with a happy ending. I'm warm all over, (last time that happened was when I drank Rum, for a much different reason)

Hie thee to a vet and have a GPS locator put in, she deserves one.

I don't understand why these aren't routine for children. We spend millions every year trying to find kids that starve on rocks or are being held as sex slaves somewhere and could end that whole problem immediately; but apparently too many parents think they're really mind control devices for Zog and the Lizard Men.
