Most candidates talk about their religion.

Could you vote for a candidate for president who said he is an atheist? An agnostic? Assume there are other viable candidates to select from.

Even I'm no US citizen, but in my opinion this will never be happen. Think only about all the many times per day US people are thanking god and telling about being religious. But even taking this aside ... anyone who wants to become president and ending a speech without "god bless America ..." will be chanceless!

Depends on 1) views on other things and 2) how vocal they are about their atheism. If they are from the Christopher Hitchens/Dawkins camp of atheism, the answer is hell no. I consider them in the same vein as Pat Robertson (who I also wouldn't vote for). I'd be more likely to vote for an agnostic than atheist.

Yeah I couldn't see voting for one of the New Atheist types. They are so obnoxious that I doubt they could clean up their personality enough to run for a political office anyway.

Regardless of what Barack Hussein Obama says about America, this is still a nation based on Christian principles, and an atheist would never get the nomination, so this is a moot point. Of course, an atheist can't be any worse than what we're stuck with right now, and might actually be patriotic and respect the Constitution.

To have someone elected to a position of great power simply because of his belief or non belief in an invisible man is truly disturbing.

WHY wouldn't an atheist be patriotic and respect the Constitution?

Atheism One: An atheist SIMPLY does not believe in a god or gods...It does NOT mean they worship satan, eat babies, do drugs, have orgies, lie, are vegetarians, cheat, love porn, steal, murder, screw around on their spouses any more than anyone else....especially christians.

I would probably prefer one, then I know the person is not dumb enough to believe in an "imaginary friend"

It is of no concern to me one way or the other. When I vote I take very little notice of whether it is a catholic, a Jew, or a protestant, because I am looking for a set of ideological beliefs on the issues, an intellect, and instinct to lead, and a temperament. Those will guide his approach to putting his values, and his background in perspective as he learns to deal with other sets of values and other backgrounds.

You can have a Catholic, a Methodist or a Muslim who uses his perception of faith, as a springboard to empathize and understand diverse spiritual experiences, or alternately you can have a Catholic or Muslim who takes his perception of faith and sees it a roadmap to social and political utopia. The difference is largely one of personality, and temperament and perception of his role.

Every word of the above applies to an atheist or an agnostic. Its arrogance, narrow-mindedness and intransigence that you watch for, not a set of religious tenets or lack thereof.

Soooooooo, how does this person take the oath of office?

This thread is simply another Christian bashing thread, and the usual suspect crawl out from under their rocks with the same tag lines and childish comments. You guys really need to get a life outside of political forums. You sound like a MSNBC blog. I do my best to only come here a couple times each week...for my own sanity!

How's about on a volume of the Federalist Papers. She would not be the first to affirm or swear on something other than a King James Bible.

From Wiki:" Theodore Roosevelt did not use a Bible when taking the oath in 1901.[11] Both John Quincy Adams and Franklin Pierce [12]swore on a book of law, with the intention that they where swearing on the constitution.[13] Lyndon B. Johnson was sworn in on a Roman Catholic missal on Air Force One.[14] Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, and Barack Obama each swore the oath on two Bibles.[11] Washington took his oath of office with an altar bible borrowed from the St. John's Lodge No. 1, Ancient York Masons lodge in New York and he kissed the Bible after taking the oath of office"

I love the way liberals twist my words into something they would like to hear. You were not paying attention, so you don't deserve a reply. The crock of steaming whatever is liberalism and its disciples who spend their time twisting the words of others.

You said what you said. I did not put words in your mouth and your words cannot be construed any other way than the way you expressed them. Maybe, just maybe, you need to practice constructing and wording something into what you actually intend the words mean. Hey, not everyone has great writing skills.

SHE??? You're pretty certain about that, right? If you're talking about Hillionaire/Hildabeast/Hildahog/PantSuit Princess, I'll take that bet against her for $100. You on?

    You said...

If that is not self-righteous and derogatory towards atheists then I do not know what is. AS IF Christian presidents in the past have not screwed the American people in so many damn ways. .
And to your 2nd point...I'm still waiting for anyone on the right to explain how the current POTUS has not respected The Constitution and has still managed to escape impeachment by the salivating, blood thirsty, witch hunting GOP. What a joke!

Hillary is not an atheist or an agnostic. Hillary was raised United Methodist. Growing up her family attended First United Methodist Church in Park Ridge, IL In Arkansas the Clintons attended: 1st United Methodist church of Little rock, and in DC it is the Foundry United Methodist Church. My use of the feminine pronoun was not meant to suggest any particular candidate but your assumption was amusing.

As long as he compartmentalizes his beliefs and makes the decisions of this nation with the empirical knowledge we as a people can see and share, I really don't give fig about his personal beliefs. I'd vote for the best candidate whether he was an atheist, agnostic, Muslim, Jew, protestant, Catholic ... maybe even a Scientologist, flat earther, or democrat. (maybe)

And that's a good thing if you can't figure out how a person swears an oath......it's kinda like , "I swear, etc."
Did you know that for years witnesses in court don't have to swear on a bible...the times advance, progress.

Your childish insults are noted :)
