IMO liberals should tell us just how long they think we can keep on going into debt. We are 18 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt now, how much further are liberals willing to take us in debt, and what will be the result?

Countries have survived 10 to 1 or higher debt to GDP ratios, so we could have 180 trillion and still be fine.

Question, when Reagan doubled the debt, where were the Conservatives screaming about increasing debt? Why was it okay then to be trillions in debt but not now?

I am a Liberal and I can provide a truthful answer. It doesn't matter if a President is a Conservative or a Liberal. Whoever becomes President in 2016 will continue the pattern of increasing the Federal Debt. Also, the Federal Government must have money hidden somewhere that is not going to be revealed to the public because I don't think the United States would undergo an $18 trillion dollar debt without the collateral to pay it back. So, there is no need to worry. There is money hidden, so, relax.

Maybe you should ask your GOP controlled congress that question. And while you're at it, please tell us which GOP congress in the last 15 years has lowered the debt?

When will you learn that BOTH the GOP and Dems spend like drunken sailors. How much you want to bet that in the next year YOUR GOP controlled congress won't lower the debt?

I take issue with this remark. I *WAS* a drunken sailor, and I *STOPPED SPENDING* when I ran out of money.

Have you seen Trump's economic plan? If you think the debt is high now just wait!

Btw you realize the wars, which you likely supported, contributed greatly to that dept. What have you got to say about that? Weren't you just on here a few weeks ago saying that Iran should be destroyed? What's that going to cost?

It's not any one party that raise the debt, it's the majority of both D and R politicians in Washington. When will we reach our limit -- when the interest is more than our GDP, which continues trending that direction.

LOL yes, but that's only because you had a limit. Now imagine if there were hundreds of drunken sailors and they were able to vote that their credit card gets increased to drink more. That's what we have in congress and both the GOP and the Dems are drunken, the only difference is what they are drinking.

The PC police would say the remark should not be "drunken sailor", but "drunken person". No wait, the PC police hate the military, so maybe they would prefer "drunken military personnel".

I think we need to get out of debt by manipulating tax revenue. Sometimes lower tax rates, sometimes raise them, depending on which will increase revenue.

But we will never get out of debt without increasing tax revenue.

btw, the US government seems to blow money equally well regardless of which party holds the presidency.

We shouldn't have any National Debt right now. In the Year 2000 the National Debt was at approximately $5 trillion dollars and Bill Clinton handed GW Bush a Projected 10 year $5.3 Trillion dollar SURPLUS, but instead of staying on course and paying off the National Debt, GW Bush turned the $5.3 Trillion 10 year Surplus into MORE! Debt with his Wars and increased spending and over Doubled the National Debt to $10.8 trillion dollars and left Barack Obama a $1.4 Trillion Budget deficit and TWO! Unfunded Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that also added TRILLIONS to the Debt. Yeah! same ol Republican Bull(*)(*)(*)(*) that wants to blame the Democrats for all the Debt. Ronald Reagan and started us down the road to Bankruptcy and Daddy Bush and GW Bush added to it and only Clinton managed to balance America's budget in the last 35 years. Face it, $ 18 TRILLION isn't getting paid off in 100 years and we'll all be dead before it EVER gets better.

We don't have a tax problem, we have a spending problem.

As long as there is a sufficient supply of bond holders.

I'm against a growing debt and have been since Reagan exploded the debt with his tax cuts and star wars and Bush exploded the debt with his tax cuts and Middle East wars, and the recession he left.

Since Reagan's "trickle down" revolution, taxes on the richest have been slashed, the government has tripled the debt relative to GDP, the 1% has seen their portion of the nation's income and wealth double to about 20% and 40% respectively.

And *still* conservatives fight tooth and nail to protect low, privilege tax cuts and breaks for the super rich.

so IMO conservatives should tell us ust how long they think we can keep on going into debt. We are 18 TRILLION DOLLARS in debt now, how much further are conservatives willing to take us in debt, and what will be the result?

Squandered a golden opportunity. It was a real tragerdy.

I got a great idea. Now that we've gotten the deficit down from $1.4 trillion per year to just over $400 billion since Obama's been in office, let's put in another conservative to slash taxes for the rich and crank up spending on the military.

That worked so well with the last three Republican presidents who did it.

When a republican president actually reduces overall spending I'll take you seriously.

Spending has dropped faster in the last 5 years than any period since WWII. We are now spending less, proportionate to GDP, than every year Reagan and Bush1 were in office.

If we collected tax revenues the same proportion to GDP as we did in 2000, we'd virtually wipe out the deficit, and the debt would be falling as a % of GDP.

So your sentiment is just your opinion, not supported by fact, IMO.

Bernie believes at least 18 trillion more is ok.

Lol. Is this a serious comment?

    --

I also think it's important for us all to remember that the true "debt" of the United States federal government isn't $18 trillion. If you add in unfunded liabilities such as pensions that the federal government has to pay and doesn't have the money for, the actual debt is looking more like $100 trillion to $200 trillion.

Those of you who vote for Democrats or big government Republicans are selling your children into debt slavery.

As long as there is a tax cut to be made at the behest of lobbyists for the wealthy, as long as there's a war to be waged on the cuff, and as long as there are entities too big to fail to be bailed out, the debt will continue to grow. When will those liberals who support that sort of thing quit taking us into debt? When there no longer are lobbyists for wealthy corporations and manufacturers of war machines, I suppose.

What should the top marginal tax rate be, and do you believe that your income belongs to yourself as an individual or to the government?
