--The small Scottish Island of Bute will welcome the UK's first refugees with a screening of the Christmas classic It was a Wonderful Life.

The Scottish island of Bute, set to receive some of the UK’s first refugees, will stage a community screening of the Christmas classic It’s a Wonderful Life to welcome the new arrivals.

The island, which has a population of 6,300, will welcome 15 Syrian refugee families in the following weeks, including around 50 children, the Guardian reports.

The community film screening of the yuletide favourite will take place on 13 December, hosted by a cinema in the town of Rothesay.

The event has reportedly sold out and the proceeds raised will fund basic amenities for the refugees.

The first UK charter flight of Syrian refugees arrived in Glasgow last week, Press Association reports.

The Home Office confirmed it has received offers to house refugees from more than 45 local authorities, including 17 in Scotland, which have aimed to take in as many as possible before Christmas.

More than a thousand refugees are expected in Scotland and they will be dispersed throughout west central areas of the country.

To reach their new homes at the foot of the Argyll peninsula, the 15 families will undertake a 30 minute journey from Glasgow to Gourock, followed by an hour-long ferry trip.

One villager said he's excited about getting to taste Syrian food, and said that he couldn't wait for the Syrians to get settled in because he wanted to ask Syrians to come to the local church to cook Syrian cuisine.

Either the Scots are being facetious about showing a Christmas movie to refugees, and taking them to the local church to cook Syrian food for them; or the Scots aren't quite as smart as they let on to be.

Either way this is a very funny story, and "funny" is good.

I don't know if they're going to force the Syrians to watch "It's a Wonderful Life".....but if they tried to force me to watch that crap I'd jump back in the sea and start swimming.

I hope that is the whole point. The movie is pretty sappy, but what Syrian would not want to be welcomed to the UK with a good movie with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed in it? I think it is hilarious and quite passive aggressive. Thumbs up to the Scottish.

Well, Americans can learn from this nice gesture from the Scots and make sure the Syrian refugees have a Merry Christmas.

No, I think the right wing will prefer to live in fear and paranoia and hate on the refuges who are fleeing a hell that the right wing helped to create by blindly backing Bush's war in Iraq.

Not only a Christmas movie, but wine :)

The new citizens of Bute are about to learn the meaning of the phrase "when in Rome.."

Please lead by example and adopt a Syrain family into your home. You are not scared of paranoid of the possible dangers, so please proceed and put your money where your mouth is.

Do you think it's at all possible that ISIS planted some of its members amongst the refugees or do you think it's completely impossible?

Obama helped create it too, by supporting the Syrian "moderate" rebels, who are actually Sunni Muslim extremists.

Obama should have helped Assad win the civil war.

    1. Is it paranoia that we have security at airports?

    2. Muslims are fleeing Muslims. If Muslims weren't violent and dangerous then why are they fleeing?

Nobody has asked you to adopt a Syrian family into your home. Why would you expect someone else to? In that situation you're the only one doing the asking.

The UK should take at least 5 million Muslim ME immigrants and Germany should take in at least 20 million.

We should put buses as our Southern border with free bus rides to anyone from south of our border for a free 1 way ticket to the EU country of their choice. Europeans are wonderful people.

By dramatically reducing then number of poor, uneducated, ignorant, extremely bigoted and sexist religious zealot fighting age men from the ME - at least 75 to 100 million for starters - and 50 million or so from south of our border into the enlightened EU many problems in both the the ME and South and Central America and Mexico would be significantly reduced.

Add sending another 100 to 200 million impoverished men from African to the EU and many problems on that continent could be significantly reduced. If 1.5 billion of the poorest people in the world, particularly men, were immigrated to the EU the world would be a better world.

I'm all about having my tax money used to give these Syrians a chance at a better life. You're the one who isn't. I'm on board with what's happening.

You forgot to mention one little detail...........you wish to spend OTHER peoples' money on it, rather than using your own.
If you believe that, fine! Do it yourself. You and your socialist ilk can band together and cram 5 families into one house. That way, you'll have plenty of extra money to spend on these poor, unfortunate 'victims'.

More US gold standard paranoia in evidence. Oh, and by the way, we have a Syrian family living two houses away and, unlike whiny Americans who seem to be terrified of everything, we're not quaking in our boots with fear.

Fifteen families to a small scottish Island - I would imagine they would think carefully who they chose. They may well be Christian for a start but whatever clearly the Island will do everything they can to help them recover from the hell they have known.

Why should I alone be made to pay ? If anything, it's right wingers who should pay out double in taxes to help the refugees given their blind support of Bush's Iraq invasion is what created this hell in the Middle East to begin with.

Frankly, what the right wing want/don't want is utterly meaningless because they've lost all clout.

What right have you to spend other peoples' money?
And you are quite wrong if you think the right has lost clout. It is the opposite. Marxist Stream Media has lost clout with the American Public. That is why Trump is leading. People are getting their info from other forms.

Yeah, keep dreaming just like you did in 2012 with Mitt. Hillary is going to win in 2016 because the right wing have just lost their way. They're too busy being afraid of Muslims and gay guys to actually be a viable party.

Damn right I'm not with it. I'm not happy at all with putting American lives in danger, you are.

You can do whatever the hell you want in Europe , I really don't care about you lol. But in that case tell your neighborhood to adopt all the refugees so they won't come here.

If you really cared about saving lives, you wouldn't have backed our invasion of Iraq that has resulted in hundreds and thousands of innocent dead Iraqis, thousands of our soldiers, and thousands of Iraqi troops who never attacked us. Your empathy is selective and therefore dismissed.
