To all you idiots demanding to be paid more that your job is worth because you deserve a "living wage," your days are numbered.

Keep it up. You will be replaced with machines before you know it. Robots don't call in sick, they're not rude to your customers, they don't steal from you, they don't have a union, they don't throw their backs out, and they don't sue you for discrimination when you fire them even if they deserved to be fired.

Did you see those mean humans bullying that poor robot?

Maybe humans do need to be replaced.

How can you bully a machine?

This must be bullying a machine, too.

If we raised the nationwide minimum wage to $15/hr today, in a few years we'd be hearing that $15/hr is a poverty wage that is just shameful and that must be raised.

Correct. Those at the bottom will always be at the bottom as inflation (ironically caused by higher wages) catches up to their higher wages. You could set the wage at $50,000/hr. and eventually, a gallon of milk will be $7,000.

I am not big proponent of the minimum wage but you do not seem to lack a good grasp on economics if you think that wages are a major cause of inflation .. it's factor but not the major underlying cause.... I just love it when people try to claim that their favorite whipping thing is the cause of something bad....

like example racial integration was the cause of the lowering of morality in this country . and Rock and Rolll was the absolute main casue of teenaged pregnancy .... and the main overriding absolute most direct cause of divorce was marriage . .... ooops - wait that one was actually true ... marriage is the cause of divorce ...

    Aren't humans just machines also?

I felt sorry for that robot, reminded me of someone screwing with a blind kid then they shove him in the back and push him down.

    Just sad

I kind of felt bad for the robot too. Then I remembered it's a robot.

The rise of robots is going to happen regardless of what the min wage is. Automation actually started back in the 40s during WW2, when there was no min wage at all. Capitalism as we know won't exist another 100 years as a result.

how much does that robot cost... cost will have to get down to where theft and destruction of a robot by a fired employee doesn't way out-way the savings

Also, at 15 dollars an hour the demand for services will rise. More people with more money to spend will pump billions into the economy. This isn't rocket science

Capitalism is not going to last another 20 years. Raising the minimum wage will push average wages up. An increase in wages will make capitalists substitute capital (robots) for labor and productivity will rise. Anything that raises productivity is a good thing as that is what enables a high standard of living. Higher wages and better technology will both improve productivity.

The OP is right that this is a very impressive demonstration. Real AI is here and will improve rapidly over the next couple of decades. It shouldn't take too long for robots to replace half of workers, both highly skilled and unskilled, and that is a good thing. Huge social changes are needed, and hopefully this won't take long. The U.S. is on a very good path right now compared to other countries, but sticking to the status quo when robot's take over the workforce would leave us far behind other countries who learn to adapt.

Finally, humanoid robots are starting to make a comeback. I think the ASIMO robot is still more impressive than this. I think ASIMO has more AI than this demonstration, has dexterous hands, and can has speech recognition. If you look at some of the latest ASIMO demonstrations, it seems like they are capable of doing basic domestic servant work. If we could make a 1,000 of these and get them into the homes of people so they can do some machine and deep learning in a real environment, I think humanoid robots would show that they have a significant role to play in a very short timeframe.

ok lets say that robots replace humans. After all eventually the production cost for atlas over there will be so low that it can replace 7.25$ an hour right? Thats just how tech works things just get better and better eventually.

who will then buy the products you make?

Just imagine the economy if we raise it to 200 an hour!

at that point jobs will move to other countries already or the robots will be less expensive. There has to be a median where people can move an economy without soley relying on credit cards and pricing ourselves out of the market.

Protectionist policies are part of this too.

Higher wages will make it happen faster. Cost of labor vs cost of automation is a huge factor in determining which way to go. There are more advanced ways of doing things they just aren't as cost effective to use....yet.

So, I guess you consider yourself not one of those "idiots" on minimum wage who wants to get paid more?

Newsflash: NO job is immune to automation, including your's. What are you going to do if you are being replaced by a robot? Are you just going to say "tank you very much" to the owners of the robots when they force you to take a 50% pay cut, if you can even get a new job, due to the increased competition with the robots? Are you going to keep hailing capitalism and blame all your plight on the poor and minimum wage?

Please be honest in your answer!

    - - - Updated - - -

So, which wage is low enough to prevent replacement by robots?

But robots can't think and make judgement, thus, they will never replace humans. And, everyone deserves a decent wage and $15.00 an hour is very reasonable.

Due to the nature of my work, I will be dead long before a machine can replace me. If on the odd chance that computer science and robotics do happen to catch up to me, I suppose I'd be pretty disappointed. My strategy would be to incentivize my employer to not replace me with a machine. If I'm unsuccessful, my backup strategy would be to go into business for myself and compete directly against my employer, providing a value proposition to my customers that my employer couldn't match.

You don't need to think to think to flip burgers, load trucks, or pick vegetables. Hell, I have a robot vacuum cleaner already!

Everyone deserves to strive to be paid as much as they can, but no one deserves to be paid more than their labor is actually worth.

Brilliant analysis, Einstein. But you only addressed half the equation. You've adequate addressed the demand curve, but have, as is typical, neglected the cost curve.
