•Journal of Urology (Baltimore), vol 153, no 3 part I (March 1995: pp 778-779) states that the rate of accidents is from 1.5% to 15%.
Read the article "Newborn Penile Glans Amputation during Circumcision .." note that the doctor who operated had already performed the operation more than 300 times - so much for experience.

•Eva Brown, the mother of a now three year old boy, took Dr. Lynn Whittington to court for circumcising her son in 1992 without her consent. ...the hospital must pay the child $65,000 in compensatory damages for the circumcision.

•The programme, "It's a Boy," to be screened on Channel 4 this month, includes graphic footage of a circumcision in the Midlands that went disastrously wrong. The 8-day-old baby, circumcised without anaesthetic by a rabbi who is not a doctor, is seen bloodied and screaming in agony during the operation. When it was clear things were going wrong, the rabbi demanded the crew stop filming, but they secretly recorded what followed. The boy developed an infection and ended up in intensive care being pumped with antibiotics and kept alive by oxygen and drips.
The film -- the work of Victor Schoenfeld, the Jewish father of a circumcised son -- also presents details of 2 babies who died as a result of circ and contains an interview with the mother of a third who almost bled to death. It reveals cases of permanent genital disfigurement, claiming that, at a conservative estimate one in 50 circumcisions leads to serious complications. The impact of the film, which also shows Muslim circumcisions, will be intensified by Ch. 4's decision to show it without commercial breaks. The Observer, London, 3 Sept 1995

•LOSS OF PENIS DUE TO CIRCUMCISION TEL AVIV (AFP) - The parents of a two-year-old child who lost his penis due to an error during circumcision, have turned to the district court of Tel-Aviv, demanding US $800,000 in damages.

•...in late July a 5-year-old boy died after a routine circumcision. Jeremie Johnson went into a coma and died a week after his parents authorized the removal of life support. Jose Tovar, MD, an anesthesiologist at Doctors Airline Hosp. in Houston, where the circumcision was performed, has resigned in connection with the incident.

•During the course of the circumcision, Dr. Tam, a pediatrician, amputated approximately 30% of the distal glans penis and transected the glandular urethra. A less than successful attempt was made to reattach that which had been excised. The Plaintiff (an infant) has undergone 4 corrective surgeries and requires at least one further surgery at this time. Circ Info Network 950107

•Allen A. Ervin was born in July 1985 and had been on life support since December 1985, when his brain was damaged from oxygen deprivation during circumcision. The Anesthesiologists who attended to Allen during the circumcision settled the case for $435,000 and agreed to lifetime payment of his medical bills. He died at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center on Wednesday, three weeks before his 7th birthday. -- noharmm99

•My son, Jacob, was born normal and healthy at Providence Hospital in Anchorage Alaska in 1986, he was routinely circumcised on his second day of life. A few days later, we brought Jacob back to the hospital because an infection had developed at the circumcision site. A decision was made by his pediatrician to hospitalize him and administer antibotics. The next morning, he began to have seizures that went untreated. Twenty-six hours after entering the hospital, he stopped breathing during a massive seizure. As a result my son suffered profound brain damage. Today Jacob is almost ten years old, he requires 24 hour a day care as he will for the rest of his life. -- noharmm93

•NEW YORK -- A clinic has agreed to pay $1.2 million to an 8-year-old immigrant boy who was mutilated during a botched circumcision five years ago, his lawyer said. The clinic, a doctor and the rabbi who performed the operation were being sued for causing "permanent shortening and disfigurement of the penis." During the trial, experts testified that the mutilation would make sexual intercourse difficult when the boy reaches maturity, according to Wednesday's New York Post.

•At the age of 8 months, Bruce Weimer suffered horrific electrical burns when the doctor tried to perform a circumcision with an electric cauterizing scalpel. Only the base of the penis remained. It was decided that it would be best for Bruce to live life as a girl, and so his testicles were then surgically removed. Later in life he suffered from depression, caused in no small part by his unfortunate condition, and the trauma of having been raised as a girl, forced is his teens to take hormone replacement pills by his parents against his will. Later in life David committed suicide, shooting himself in the head with a shotgun.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the etiology and management of the group of abnormalities referred to as the inconspicuous penis. DESIGN: Analysis of 19 cases seen over a period of 2 years by chart review. SETTING: Children's hospital in a major metropolitan area. PATIENTS: Nineteen boys referred to two pediatric urologists over a period of 2 years with penises that appeared abnormally small, but on palpation and measurement, were found to have a normal shaft with a normal stretched length. Diagnoses included were buried penis, webbed penis, and trapped penis. Patients ages ranged from 1 week to 13 years. FINDINGS: There were eight patients (42%) with trapped penis, and all were complications of circumcision (at age 1 week to 7 months). Abstract from: Pediatrics. 92(6):794-9, 1993 Dec. "The Inconspicuous Penis". Authors: Bergeson PS., Hopkin RJ., Bailey RB Jr., McGill LC., Piatt JP. Department of General Pediatrics and Urology, Phoenix Children's Hospital, AZ

They are a reason that circumcisions should not be routinely performed, like they are in the USA, and to a lesser extent Australia.

    Circumcision Horror Stories

To this day, I bear the scar where the doctor cut my little leg during circumcision procedure as a bambino. :(

    Just beside my right knee.

    It's almost embarrassing... almost.

Circumcision is rarely done in Australia these days, unless for a specific religious practice like Jews or Muslims. Then the parents would most likely seek out a practicing Jewish or Muslim doctor.

When our eldest grandson was born three years ago, the subject of circumcision was brought up by my son-in-law who is circumcised during a check up with their family GP. He refused point blank. Our grandson was never circumcised, neither was his little brother.

I don't understand how the religeous beliefs of parents justifies them permenantly mutilating the genitals of their child, marking them for their life without their consent as belonging to the same religion.

The Tragic Story of a Boy turned into a Girl

Bruce Weimer was born in Winnipeg, Canada, as one of two identical twins. When they were only eight months old the doctors wanted to circumcise both boys (cutting off the part of the penis known as the foreskin). Neither of the parents had ever finished highschool and did not know any better, so they brought their twins in for the "procedure". The doctor who normally did the procedure was not available that day, so another doctor who did not have much experience with circumcisions was assigned. The doctor somehow got the idea into his head that the procedure would be less complicated if he used an electric cauterizing scalpel. Such a device is virtually never used for circumcisions. The doctor attempted to make the first incision, but the scalpel did not seem to be working. He turned up the power setting. It still did not work. Frustrated, the doctor turned up the power setting all the way. What happened next was horrifying. Another doctor, who was in an adjacent room at the time, later reported that he could smell burnt flesh.

Bruce's little penis changed color and became rigid and rough in texture. His pee hole was sealed closed. Doctors had to make an incision below the babies navel and insert a catheter directly into the bladder so the urine would be able to drain out. Over the next few days, the penis blackened like charcoal and finally flacked away. Only the base of the penis was left.

Bruce's parents were horrified when they were told of what had happened to their little boy baby (the doctors waited two days to tell them). But even this is not as shocking as what came next.

The parents, concerned about their son's prospects for future happiness and sexual function without a penis, took their son to see a psychologist named John Money, who was at the cutting edge of research of young children born with abnormal genitalia. He believed that, although the penis could not be replaced, a functional vagina could be constructed surgically, and Bruce would be more likely to achieve successful, functional sexual maturation as a girl than as a boy. The parents did not know what to do. They were impressed by the psychlogist who seemed to know what he was talking about. Their local family physician strongly recommended against the advice of the psychlogist, but Money stressed that they needed to begin as soon as possible. After a few months, Money finally persuaded the parents to consent to sex reassignment surgery for their baby. At the age of 22 months, the baby's testicles were removed. The baby was thereafter raised as a female and given the name Brenda.

When Brenda reached 11 years of age, he was forced to take hormone pills to feminize his body. Brenda did not want to turn into a girl, and at first refused to take the pills. Her parents did not give him any choice, he later remembered. He pretended to take the pills while flushing them down the toilet, but the parents caught on and thereafter stood watch over the child while he was made to swallow the pills. To his intense dismay, Brenda grew a pair of breasts. Brenda was forced to wear frilly dresses, even during the cold Canadian winters. Dr. Money started pressuring the family to bring him in for surgery during which a vagina would be constructed, the family discontinued the follow-up visits. From 22 months into his teenaged years Reimer urinated through a hole surgeons had placed in the abdomen. Dr. Money wrote in his reports that everything was proceeding successfully with the patient. (In his reports, Money had ignored or concealed the developing evidence that the patients gender reassignment to female was not going well.)

Despite this, Brenda did not identify with being a girl, and made this clear to her family. By the age of 13, Reimer was experiencing suicidal depression, and told his parents he would commit suicide if they made him see John Money again. After this, Brenda's parents finally told him the truth about hat had happened as to him as a baby and the gender reassignment. At age 14, he decided to assume a male gender identity, and changed his name to "David". The hormone treatments were reversed, and David later went on to marry a woman and adopt children. David suffered from severe depression throughout his adult life, in no small part due to his traumatic childhood experiences. He had to deal with long term unemployment, financial instability, and a troubled marriage. Tragically, David finally committed suicide, shooting himself in the head with a shotgun.

A book was made about David Weimer's ordeal. "As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl" by John Colapinto.

Here is a picture of the child as "Brenda",

    all that story really sucks.
part of it is true and the rest is a load of crap.

read here what happened to that little boy, which was a victim of doctor Evil:

    Repeat after me:

    Jews didnt do it...
    Jews didnt do it...
    Jews didnt do it...
    Jews didnt do it...
    Jews didnt do it...
    Jews didnt do it...

YOURS WAS NOT A STORY OF CIRCUMCISION.

So you are saying that John Colapinto blatently lied in the biography? I have read the actual book, "As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl".

They were both diagnosed with phimosis, at only 8 months?!? Do you have any idea how implausible this sounds?
Even if they actually had phimosis, a circumcision is hardly needed to correct it. Although American doctors just love cutting out body parts whenever there is even the slightest thing wrong. (tonsils, appendixes, back molar teeth, foreskins, etc)

I am not entirely sure what you are even trying to claim, nor where you are getting your information.
This horrible tragedy would have never happened if doctors had not been trying to perform a needless circumcision on a little baby.

So... anecdotes are really the wrong approach when it comes to evaluating the medical appropriateness of male circumcision. What you want are studies that evaluate what the "number needed to treat" and "number needed to harm" of circumcision are. I've seen a few penile cancers that could have been prevented with circumcision, but they don't prove that circumcision is good any more than your stories prove that circumcision is bad. We want to know whether a person is more likely to be hurt or harmed by circumcision, and to what extent on each side. There are many factors to consider. Penile cancer is one of the rare but serious risks of not being circumcised, while reduced transmission of sexually transmitted diseases, and reduced rates of urinary tract infections, are more significant factors in favor of circumcision. Of course the biggest argument against circumcision is going to be serious infection in a baby. Is fatality from that more or less common than fatality from not getting a circumcision? Both numbers are likely very low and the numbers might balance out overall, and that's why doctors tend to go with whatever the parents prefer. This is in contrast to female circumcision, which has no known benefits and but has known harms.

That is such a stupid argument. Being castrated would also prevent any chance of testicular cancer, that does not mean it makes any sense to do it. We could go down a whole list of preventatively removing body parts and organs to prevent the possibility of future cancer.

Well first of all, penile cancer is not the only consideration on the side of circumcision and if you had actually comprehended my post you would know that. Second, penile cancer can kill you (about 1 death per day in the US, 2000 cases per year), not just cause you to need a dick amputation. And also, circumcision is not similar to a dick amputation except in the rare cases where it goes horribly wrong. So you need to balance that risk and other risks of circumcision, against the benefits that include not only preventing penile cancer but also reducing UTIs (which can lead to death via pyelonephritis and urosepsis), and reducing the spread of STDs (circumcision halves the transmission of HIV per exposure, for example).

As to your castration point, body parts are removed when the risk of cancer is high compared to the risk of removing the body part. Women who have BRCA mutations have a high risk of developing breast cancer, so that is why it makes sense to remove the breasts, for example. The risk of removing most body parts is relatively high, so they are not routinely done. The risk of circumcision is not zero, but the risk is low.

Stanford Doctor Performs "Life-Giving" Reconstructive Penis Surgery on Mississippi Man
Plastic surgeon thinks man might be first in world with "a totally reconstructed penis to go and have a baby"
    NBC Bay Area
    Stephanie Chuang, April 10, 2014

One man, who never thought he would be able to have a child of his own, traveled 2,200 miles from a small Mississippi town to the Bay Area on Thursday for a special reunion, not with family or friends, but with a doctor.
"If it wasn’t for Dr. Lee, it wouldn't be possible," Mike Moore said.
He took a moment, choking up as he looked at the 6-month-old baby sitting in his wife’s lap.

To fully understand Moore’s story, rewind to when he was just 7 years old.
Doctors discovered he had an infection that prevented him from urinating properly. That led to a circumcision, but the procedure was botched, spreading another infection, forcing doctors to amputate. For years, Moore had to live without normal anatomy.

Moore fell into a deep depression - until seven years ago, when he met Dr. Gordon Lee, who specializes in reconstructive plastic surgery at Stanford Medical Center.

Moore had been disappointed by failed surgery attempts at reconstruction, but after speaking with Lee, decided to give it one last shot.

The doctor was able to successfully reconstruct Moore’s penis using tissue from his thigh. It was the second time Lee had ever performed the surgery.

"His story is, as far as I know, a first in the world for a totally reconstructed penis to go and have a baby," Lee said.

I am 100% against attacks on circumcision. Banning Jewish and Muslim religious practice is very wrong. Spanish Inquisition banned Islam and Judaism. Sadly some Liberals want to restore the practices of Inquisition.

Circumcision should remain 100% legal for any adult to voluntarily undergo.

Circumcizing children is unecessary, unbenefical, mutilating and cruel.

I just don't hear from a lot of guys complaining that their rights were breached in that skin removal episode, when they were less than a week old. Nobody I know seems to feel the trauma even when asked. My two boys don't care, my brothers don't care, my best friend doesn't care and I don't care. Very small sample size but this isn't a topic that I have broadly discussed with acquaintances or co-workers.
