Even thinking about possibly using nuclear weapons is INSANE!!

The Nukes we dropped on Japan maxed out at 12 Kilotons.

The Nuclear Warheads we use now such as the Minuteman III's now single warhead as the Minuteman III used to carry 3 MIRV's but with strategic nuclear arms reduction they now carry a single W87 Warhead. The original yield of the W87 was 300 kilotons of TNT, but has the announced ability to be upgraded to a yield of 475 kilotons, presumably by using more HEU in the fusion secondary stage tamper.

Before this the Minuteman II had the 1.2 Megaton W56 warheads.

Point is these are Thermonuclear Fusion Warheads that have in some cases hundreds of times the explosive yield as the old fission bombs we dropped on Japan and if only 100 of these Fusion Bombs were detonated so much dust and debris would be thrown up into the atmosphere that it would blot out the sun and drastically drop worldwide temperatures to the point that a Nuclear Winter would ensue and billions of people would die due to starvation from failed crops never mind the radiation deaths.

The U.S. has been LOWERING it's nuclear warhead explosive yields for many decades as unlike the Russian's....American Nuclear Missiles and Nuclear Delivery Systems are accurate in the extreme and unfortunately the Soviet's and now Russian's have compensated for their nuclear delivery systems inaccuracy by using higher explosive yield warheads but their use of a heavier bomb also hinders both accuracy and SURVIVABILITY.

Unlike Russian Nuclear Weapons...American Nuclear Weapons are survivable in the extreme and although this will never happen it is estimated that the U.S. could destroy over 85% of all Russian Nuclear Weapons on a First Strike.

Still the remaining 15% is MORE than enough to cause mass destruction on a global scale.

The only real defense for this is the U.S. Military's Direct Energy Weapons Program as such missile defense capable by the FEL or Free Electron Laser which is being deployed NOW will eventually have 100 Megawatt Beaming Capability and a FEL beam so powered is capable of VAPORIZING the actual NUCLEAR WARHEAD atop any targeted missile.
