For the last three days running, football hooliganism in Marseille involving England fans has once again dominated the media headlines. Reuters journalist Mitch Phillips described the influx of the first wave of 70,000 England fans on the French port city:

“….the fans wasted no time establishing a foothold in Vieux Port to start three days of drinking and singing ahead of Saturday’s Euro 2016 match against Russia. Noisy and boisterous, bare-chested and full of lager and bravado, they draped the flags around the Queen Victoria “British pub” and roared out their songs of defiance in the time-honored manner of “England Away”, just as they had in the same port-side bars 18 years ago.”

    http://www.reuters.com/article/us-soccer-euro-eng-marseille-idUSKCN0YV2GO

Shortly after the fans had gathered in large numbers in the bars and pubs of the city, scenes of drunken mayhem followed that involved pitched battles, the throwing of bottles and chairs and the chanting of racist abuse. This was preceded by crude displays of jingoism.

Why do English fans in large numbers act in this way, particularly when abroad?

The following analysis would appear to address some of the social and anthropological issues:

    What do you think?

I think you have missed half the story. I imagine willfully of course.

The writer did a nice job putting into words what everyone senses about the hooligans. I saw a video of one of them throwing some coins to some Arab children and laughing as he watched them groveling and fighting for them. The rest of the British watched with indifference and could care less even when a Frenchwoman blasted them about it.

I saw that too. It made me feel ashamed to be English.

The story wasn't about Russian hooligans.

Don't be ashamed. It's not a reflection on all the English. Only the drunk ones. :alcoholic: I guess the Russians decided to put the fear of God in them.

I keep telling people but they just won't listen: DON'T MESS AROUND WITH THE RUSSIANS

How telling that English fans must have "cultural interpreters" when travelling to France... Please lads, just vote 'Yes' to Brexit next week and let's be done with it.

English fans don't need "cultural interpreters" -- what they need is a modicum of education!

Pretty much on target. And so I would rather have English hooligans direct their inner anger towards their own country instead of mine (screw the Queen)!

what's the other half and why the story should be presented in full since the practice of all media publications is half thruth's or even less?

The other half would be that Russia has been sanctioned and risks being thrown out.

    http://www.uefa.org/mediaservices/newsid=2376811.html

Disciplinary proceedings have been opened following the UEFA EURO 2016 group stage match between England and Russia (1-1) in Marseille.
Charges against the Football Union of Russia:
Crowd disturbances (Art. 16 (2) Disciplinary Regulations)
    Racist behaviour (Art. 14 DR)
Setting off of fireworks (Art. 16 (2) DR)

    http://www.uefa.org/MultimediaFiles...CompDisCases/02/37/00/86/2370086_DOWNLOAD.pdf

The Reuters article is also quite weird. Using events from 40 years ago to paint English fans to be as bad as the Russians today is weak.
But you only see the half truths that you want no Sharik?

    OP

Earlier this morning on the BBC Today radio show I heard one English brain-dead lifeform saying he wasn't there for the football, he was there for the hooliganism 'And I've been waiting for it for years.' They really should be put down at birth! 'useless eaters' I think they're called.

    I've been ashamed to be English for years. And I don't want to worry anyone but - football . . . tribalism . . . nationalism . . . violence . . . war?? It's coming.

Your Russophobia has no boundaries. Is not it? ...But the reality is - it is different by Western media propaganda.... For example video for you - Slovak and Russian fans clashed on the streets.

Ah yes... The propaganda claims. I am sorry it is so hard for you to be part of the international community. You should just stay home and play with yourselves as it seems you are not civilised enough to play in the Euro or partake in the Olympics. Keep it up and you will lose the World Cup too.

But of course the Russians would claim propaganda after receiving sanctions from UEFA and a suspended disqualification. You never do anything wrong right? No doping, no violence and no cheating right? It's all PROPAGANDA... tsk tsk

How does that fit in with your anti-EU position and wish to leave? Aren't you enforcing those negatives you just listed by being on that side of the debate on that issue?

It's philosophical not indicative, therefore nothing to do with my stance on the EU - which is that I don't want my country to be governed by a bunch of unelected and incompetent foreigners.

You are promoting all those negatives you were complaining about. The rest is the usual anti-EU bull you hear from most anti-Europeans.
I am sure you don't even know who your Euro-parliamentarian is.

You're quite right, and I don't want to know! The sooner we're out of this fiasco the better for us generally, and we'll be out before the (*)(*)(*)(*) hits the fan.

Ah yes... Typical. Complain about the EU being unelected (incorrect) and then not know who your parliamentarian is (the people you are supposed to vote for).
Complain about nationalism and tribalism while arguing that no foreigner should have a say over my country.

God... Do you not see just how little sense you make?

I'm so disillusioned with, and despairing of the appalling calibre of today's politicians I don't even vote in our GEs. Oh, and the Commissioners, who have total power over the corrupt MEPs are not repeat not elected. Surprised you don't know that.

You can guarantee that a huge majority of the English football fans looking for trouble will vote OUT in the election next week. They will be the very same people who post selective videos of a small group of Muslims causing damage to parked cars in Paris and then say "Look at Muslims on rampage destroying Paris"

So... as far as I understand the evil Russian thugs completely destroyed the festival of English culture in Marseille?
