NIGHT LIFE IN ANTARCTICA: No sunspots? No problem. "Yesterday, June 28th, we observed auroras so bright they cast shadows on the ground," reports B. Sudarsan Patro of the Bharati Indian Base Station in Antarctica. He sends this picture from the Larsemann Hills at latitude 69°S:
On June 28th there were no sunspots, no solar flares, and no CMEs. Even without those forms of solar activity, the aurora australis appeared in force over the frozen continent. What caused the display? We don't know. Sometimes space weather just happens

Odd that it wasn't associated with any of the known causes of auroras.
Sorry about the thumbprint picture. It was the best I could do with that picture.

Unlike the cadre the believes science is settled, much is still unknown. The solar effect on global weather is one of the least understood.

One explanation they gave for this unusual aurora is that the outer atmosphere is warming. Everything is warming according to these people. If something isn't right, it's because it is probably "warming". There will be space warming soon.

While I couldn't say what the exact cause here is, the auroras are controlled by the magnetic field of the Earth and has nothing to do with climate change.

Also probably unrelated, but an interesting coincidence, I read an article recently about how the hole in the ozone layer in the southern hemisphere has shown the first signs of healing.

Perhaps the two actually are related somehow. Probably not though.

Not related to the thread topic directly, but part of what I mentioned earlier.

I am sure that given time, thinking and research the unusual Aurora will be explained. But if one rejects science then one will have to find some other reason to believe in what caused the unusual Aurora.
Maybe it,s a sign from God that he hates science and does not want humans studying the Antarctic so that humans do not eat any further up on the tree of knowledge.

Or maybe it is SpacecAliens who caused this aurora or the Nazis who escaped zeros the allies and are now
Living under the ice using space alien technology and maybe the Gubmint of Truman conspired to let the Nazis escape to Antartica to live under the ice until they come back and take over the world after Trump becomes president.

If not for Earth's magnetosphere, solar winds would have eroded our atmosphere and by now, Earth would be uninhabitable.

Isn't a functioning Aurora Borealis and Aurora Australisis a good thing?

I don't think they are bad or good (except that they are beautiful); but they usually appear after a run in to solar winds from coronal mass ejections caused by sunspots. There were no solar storms last night. That is what makes it unusual. It is a 'head scratcher' for scientists.

Also I forgot to give credit for the story and picture to Spaceweather.com.

Here is the explanation scientists gave this morning to the strange auroras:
This display shows that bright auroras can occur even when solar activity is very low. There were no sunspots, no solar flares, and no CMEs on June 30th, yet skies turned green anyway. Probably what happened is this: Earth passed through a region of space filled with negative-polarity magnetic fields (known to researchers as "negative B sub z"). Such fields can open a crack in Earth's magnetosphere. Solar wind pours in and sparks bright auroras--no sunspots required.

I did not give credit to spaceweather.com for the picture and story (bad me). I hardly doubt that the people who monitor spacweather--scientists-- think that it is ET in origin, or whether they would attribute it to some god.

Strange, I thought all of these phenomena were supposed to get worse, not better.
Ironically, Obama is using climate change as a premise to unit Mexico, Canada, and the US into a North American Union. Working together we can tackle climate change, and all that stuff. The "Three Amigos" just spent a few days together. I'm sure the North American Union was the main topic of conversation.

The U.S., Canada and Mexico put climate change at the center of efforts to deepen the North American alliance, pledging to cut greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas sector, boost the development of clean power and build new cross-border transmission lines.

President Barack Obama, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexico President Enrique Pena Nieto completed a one-day summit in Ottawa Wednesday, where they unveiled a commitment to see half of the continent’s electricity generated by clean sources by 2025.

Well the sun has entered a solar cycle of decreased activity, so I would have guessed it's still solar activity even if it is solar minimum,

mmm.. no sunspots no flares... yes that is strange.

No, the Lizard Men are testing the stronger mind control rays they are going to need to DEFEAT Trump in November. Double up your tinfoil, and make sure you wear it into the voting booth or you won't know even who you're voting for.
