Turkey is the most moderate Muslim state in the entire region and one of the most USA friendly. Therefore, most American Democrats and liberals must hate Turkey and their elected leaders.

They also had access through the Suez, until Nasser closed it. The question was whether we should kick Turkey out of NATO. They straddle a critical naval choke-point.

    Very much open.

And push the 2nd biggest army NATO has towards Russia, China and Iran.
Most idiotic thing imaginable for the west to do.

I'm sure you aren't an idiot, but it almost seems like you thought I was talking about a current, rather than historical event.
That was my caution. I remain convinced you are not an idiot, but it is proving very difficult to have an intelligent conversation with you.

Even if Turkey pulls away from NATO, it's very unlikely they would move toward Russia. I suspect Erodogan sees himself as a rising 3rd power, perhaps a restoration of the Turkish Sunni Caliphate that ruled much of the Sunni world for over 500 years. He has now stopped American operations against ISIS staged from Incirlik. And it has always been suspected that Turkey and ISIS at least had some free passage agreements that allowed ISIS to move men and materials across the border.

It was always open for Russia. Currently and historically...
    /facepalm.

Right next to it, and Iran. Lots of Russians spend their vacation there...

Its gone. 2,700 judges purged today.

From this point forward, if we remain, we are aiding the enemy of freedom.

We need to withdraw and on the way out nuter their military power, its continued presence is destabilizing from this point forward.

Yeah? Might want to smack your face again. What was "The Yellow Fleet"? Then look up the Münsterland and the Nordwind. What is their place in history?

Plenty just read. The reality here is hard to digest, understood. But everything we stand for in the West has fallen in Turkey. Gay rights, gone. Women's equality, gone. Religious freedom, gone.

Yet you rejoice. Odd. Very odd.

That's not entirely true. Used to be the case some 10-15 years ago. Under Erdogan Turkey has changed its direction. Turkey is neither a moderate Muslims state nor is the USA friendly. The Turkish army is, but Washington DC policy makers betrayed them. This failed coup didn't happen out of the blue. Obama and his cronies in Washington DC gave the Turkish military a green light and then left them out in the cold.

Turks hate everyone. The Jews in particular.

The Turkish people don’t look favorably upon the U.S., or any other country, really

I smell something fishy about the coup but I can't quite put my finger on what it is.

I've just read Silver Surfers post 39 - it think he's 'warm'.

I can certainly understand the reason and bear no love for the man, but to "punish" the biggest Muslim country will only drive it away and compleatly kill off any Erdugan opposion, post failed coup and a boycott will push the islamists off the edge and this is no Lebanon or some desert country.....Turkey is very important.

That may be so however we do not know the details of that. At the same time more soldiers were killed than civilians. These were people who clearly could have killed the people. They had the guns. They chose not to and were rewarded with being beaten to death. In addition the PM was boasting yesterday that 20 'plotters', one has to imagine not engaged in fighting, had their lives 'extinguished' - this he said as a warning to anyone else thinking of a coup. Now the judiciary and army is being torn apart and they are wanting to bring back the death penalty for them.

Has the US got use of it's base back?

Of course NATO wants to keep Turkey in. It is the only possibility of keeping any control over the situation there. Turkey out - Europe having 100,000 Refugees a day and any ISIS who wish. Its an extremely dangerous situation for Europe.

It wasnt the Turkish army just a fraction and most of the sildiers didnt even know what they were doing, it was so clumsy and wierd since it had very low chances of success (taking Istanbul with a single battalion of Tanks ??) that immidietly ppl began to wonder if it was planned by erdugan.

The Army pulled revolutiuons before and they know the job, this attempt was like made to be just an attempt.

No. But with scuttled ships at both ends of the canal, they could not leave. No ships were entering or leaving the canal for many many years, including Russian. Turkey sits on some very strategic waterways, if we have to go from allies, to competitors, to even enemies, lets keep in mind the next steps down the road before we rush headlong through the first ones.

Frankly, we need to consider rapprochement with Russia.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
    The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned.

To suggest civilians and police officers killed everybody and the army didn't do a thing and a totally innocent 3rd party, is the most dumbest thing I've read on this so far. Them terrorist of the army are the cause of all that. They killed everybody and probably plenty of other people in the army itself.

It never was their base to begin with.

Europe got the UK and the US to thank for that. They are the cause of all this with their lies about Saddam Hussein. They plunge Iraq in total chaos by deliberate removing the army, police and justice department, and so created ISIS.

None of them ships were Russian. You agree. The end.

I find it likely that the Turkish government will soon become Islamic vs. secular and get itself ejected from NATO. The United States should be and probably already is preparing to remove all assets from that country and stop the financial aide programs. It is a great pity as Turkey was once an example of what a ME nation could become if the dropped Allah from the books.
