Really? There are 1,4 billion Chinese and 1.2 billion Indians. Each of those countries outnumber the United States by about four to one. You might try checking facts before posting silly statements.

Americans are not the best when it comes to to knowledge of other countries, but given your first statement, you might have benefited from even a mediocre US education. You remind me of the people who get down on their knees every day and thank God that they are Trump supporters.

So far, the Internet is not doing a good job of creating cross-national identities. Many Europeans are becoming more nationalistic. Britain is unlikely to be the last country to declare the international European Union a failed endeavor and leave it. I see no signs of a decline in nationalism among the rabid right in the USA. Russia's and China's populations also seem to be becoming more nationalistic. Then there's the Australian who written several posts in this thread who seems to be a fanatical Australian nationalist. Nationalism seems steady in the USA and generally on the increase around the world. I see no signs of a decline.

There is a huge generational divide. We have a lot of people from 40 up who weren't part of the internet age. Look at the Brexit vote and just how exactly the divide went like that.
Britain is very like the only country to leave. They were reluctant members from the beginning. Countries are still joining the EU and the Euro. The UK will pay the price for that vote and in turn make the EU stronger.

The US has also shown a much more progressive and open young generation. It as a matter of a few decades and we will start seeing a lot more movement away from nationalism.
Basically we have opposing views :)

As an old guy, I hate to see you put the blame on us, but I have to admit that you are genuinely right about Brexit. Most of the young people didn't bother showing up to vote, so middle aged and older people carried the day.

However, on the Continent, the growing nationalism isn't confined to the old people. The French population is in general reluctant to stay in the EU. Remember that the French and the Dutch voted down the EU Constitution only to have a revised version shoved down their throats without their input. I was living in France at the time, and there was a lot of resentment. There still is. There is growing resentment of the EU in Italy, Greece, and the Netherlands, also. I don't see a lot of countries clamoring to get into the EU but several clamoring to get out. I think the populations several countries, against their elected leaders wishes, are waiting to see how Brexit works out before taking the step themselves.

Personally, I hold both American and British passports, and I am very pro-EU.

By the way, I wish more people would do what you advise in your signature.

The EU has its issues it needs to work at as it has always had. I do not worry too much about the possibility of breakup.
Voting for EU treaties is always difficult. They are easy pray for demagogues and it is hard to explain a 700 page document to voters.

I don't know... My feeling is usually that the grievances are towards their own governments (even though people might think the reason is the EU). Unfortunately some European parties try to channel that anger towards the EU and into a nationalist sentiment.

There was an immediate surge in EU support after Brexit and I expect it to continue as things unfold with the UK.

People feel the EU is important on the world stage and more and more people feel European. They also support the Euro and free movement. People are worried and pessimistic but that is natural given the last decade. It will be interesting to see the movement in the next release.

Thanks. People unfortunately get a lot of misinformation on the internet.

Few posters here identify their country.
    Funny, huh?

Few? I would say the majority.
I might be wrong though I don't think it is few.

Rabid right? America has had a democrat president for the past 8 years.
Americans are fiercely national regardless of political persuasion.
Americans don't care much about the other side of the globe unless we're planning a trip. That hemisphere can have itself.

I said few posters identify their country. That would indicate the majority do not do so.
Then those with no identity comment on matters around the world.
    It's a little comically tragic.

I think a majority do identify their country here.
You think people who don't identify with a country has no identity? Or for that matter people who decide not to put a country on this forum?

You are speaking for Americans with limited intellectual curiosity. Intelligent Americans are well aware that what happens in other countries affects us.

Intelligent Americans know we're not privy to the real story.
    What do you know? Haha.

Your original post read, "Americans out number other nationalities by 20 to one." Period! (or full stop if you prefer). Learn to read your own posts before you lecture others!

I'm curious lizarddust... And I admit, that like most Americans, I don't know much about foreign countries lifestyles, because we aren't obsessed with other countries lifestyles. We don't even really care.

But since you keep bringing it up, I have a few honest questions about your country, Australia. No offense intended.

    1. Do you have air conditioning? What percentage of houses do?
    2. Do you have TV? If you do, how many channels? What percentage of houses do?
3, Are you allowed to own guns?
    4. How many different brands of beer are at your local store?
    5. Do you have a dishwasher and a clothes washing machine and dryer? What percentage of houses do?

    Just curious.

I wish those that say that could accept they need to prove that in this anonymous environment.

By agreeing and accepting these two prime constitutional intents, it is un questionable that one is American.

Do you agree and accept that the framers of the founding documents intended for us to alter or abolish government destructive to our unalienable rights?

Do you agree and accept that the ultimate purpose of free speech is to enable the unity adequate to effectively alter or abolish?

I'm a Euro -- and I just love the USA.

    What's so wrong about that!

Took three days off from work last week. Had three massive work-outs, cooked some good food and watched the DNC in my USA T-shirt.

    Sweet!

    USA, USA, USA!

    I'm extremely glad I'm European.
We all are born into a certain environment, which is more or less just a geographical coincidence, and then are socialized in a certain way.
This way we end up what we are.
Btw, IMO, the thread title is rather silly, what obsession are we talking about? The simple fact that some Europeans on this board are interested in US poitics?
    I call that education.
