The real problem is that Trump's rhetoric will "inspire" some whackjob...like the rhetoric put out by the Israeli press that "inspired" that nutcase to assassinate Rabin. HE thought he was being a patriot.

    You for one

So assuming a tyranny of some sort,

How many claims of tyranny have we heard from right wingers on this very forum?

Don't pretend you didn't see them. That would be dishonest. You're not dishonest...are you?

If it ever got to the point where some of us had to take up arms to defend our country against a dictator, you won't be hanging anyone. It would be kill or be killed.

We have rights granted to us by our Creator the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. And some hack judge with an agenda won't be taking those away. People like myself won't be out looking for trouble or conspiring to revolt, IMO for this scenario to occur the fight will be coming to us. Hate speech laws forbidding the preaching of the Gospel. Gun confiscation. Martial law declared by someone trying to overstay his or her lawful term in office. Those kinds of things.

No you won't be hanging anyone, I can assure each and every one of you of that.

    stochastic terrorism

Stochastic Terrorism: Part 1, triggering the shooters.

Stochastic terrorism is the use of mass communications to incite random actors to carry out violent or terrorist acts that are statistically predictable but individually unpredictable. In short, remote-control murder by lone wolf.

This is what occurs when Bin Laden releases a video that stirs random extremists halfway around the globe to commit a bombing or shooting.

This is also the term for what Beck, O'Reilly, Hannity, and others do. And this is what led directly and predictably to a number of cases of ideologically-motivated murder similar to the Tucson shootings. As of this writing, there is no evidence to link Jared Loughner to a specific source of incitement; but some of the other cases can be clearly linked.

The stochastic terrorist is the person who is responsible for the incitement. For example they go on radio or television and stir up hatred toward a particular person or group.

The random actor, or "lone wolf" as the term is used in law enforcement and intel, is the person who responds to the incitement by carrying out the violent or terrorist act against the target person or group. For example they shoot someone or detonate a bomb. While their action may have been statistically predictable (e.g. "given sufficient provocation, someone will probably do such-and-such"), the specific person and the specific act are not yet predictable.

You know, I've read many of your posts, and have thought that you were one of the few "sane liberals" that one could actually discuss issues with in a reasonable manner without resorting to talking points and hysterics.

I may have to reconsider that assumption.

If I understand you correctly now, you are saying that the 2nd Amendment itself is intimidating?

So you're frightened now by a "liberal hunting permit?"

Meanwhile, it's you guys who are the real threat.

Racially charged confrontation over Trump T-shirt ends in apparent crowbar attack

The left has been pretty politically violent this year. I think I have a lot more to fear from you and your ilk than you do from mine. That's why I won't put a Trump sign in my yard. I don't want crazed liberals to either commit vandalism or to threaten or attack me or my family.

So in keeping with this thread, I am worried about violence as a result of this election season, but I worry about what you and your fellow travelers are going to do as you guys get more unhinged.

Don't be dense. Context is everything when and where weapons are displayed. Concealed carry is for defense. Open carry is to make a statement,

You do understand why Wild Bill Hickock demanded drovers check in their guns in Abilene? He wasn't some liberal do-gooder - he just knew the Texas cowboys would get drunk, and get in fights. Open carry on the high plains is defense. Open carry in the Big Thicket is hunting. Open carry in your local Starbucks is naked intimidation.

So, if you are walking down the downtown sidewalk, and you see somebody in camos with what looks like an automatic weapon, what do you do? Assume he is a terrorist and run for cover. Or assume he is a legitimate advocate of 2nd amendment rights?

Better make the right decision, though, and make it fast. 'Cause your life may depend on it.

But in the most important sense, the message is the same whether it is a terrorist or not. The message is that I have a powerful weapon, and that I can decide on a whim who lives and dies.

If it ever comes to what your doom and gloom scenario paints...Then Hell yes my one gun will be used to defend my Constitutional freedoms...and I will have absolutely no problem holding my gun and dying for that right!

So basically you are saying we should conceal carry and just take you by surprise.

I have no scenarios. Only descriptions of what is already happening. I'll leave it to you to determine how accurate the descriptions are.

One thing, however. Constitutional freedoms don't exist in a vacuum. They exist because society is composed of people who support and protect them. If you are already planning on dying to protect them, then arguably we have reached the stage were they have become irrelevant. Not enough people support them to make it more than words on a piece of paper.

For instance, how far would you go to protect freedom of assembly when it blocks afternoon traffic. Will you go as far as you would to protect that gun you own?

The real traitors are the special interests and the politicians themselves. They betrayed the American people to the strings attached them, party affiliation does not matter.

They want us to fight each other and keep us all distracted instead of focusing on what is being done behind closed doors in Washington. I wish more people got this.

Well, get your gear on because you will may well be taking up arms against the government at some future point, LOL.

    1. Should be no worries here, no one rational on either side of the aisle wants to repeal the 2nd amendment and no one is coming door to door to get the guns, LOL. This is a myth, a well organized propaganda effort that many have bought into.

    2. Federal (and state) martial law has been declared on multiple occasions in the past, for reasons far less than "virulent pandemic & nuclear war".

    3. Suspension of habeas corpus - yup, been there done that. WW II ring a bell. Check out what happened to law abiding US citizens of Japanese descent, for example. And yes, I can see certain politicos trying the same thing with Muslim US citizens. They will be thrilled to know you will protect their rights as US citizens and attack the Feds.

    4. As far as I'm concerned we already crossed that line with the use of 'contractors' in Iraq for example. Killing, torture & detention were all part of the game. If we allow it overseas, we just may allow it here. As for the domestic situation I have always been troubled by using private companies in our prison system. My opinion only but the state should be handling this, top to bottom.

    5. This shouldn't ever be an issue, even those "commie socialist" Scandinavian nations aren't over 66%. I'm curious as to what you deem an "upper middle income" to be?

    6. Been there done that - on multiple occasions in the past, usually during wars and/or during an after an economic crisis. A whole lot of 'nationalization' was going on as recently as 7-8 years ago. The National Railroad Passenger Corp. is what's left of the nationalization of the railroads 100 years ago - we know it by its more familiar name, Amtrak.

    7. Been there, done that. The last time the US declared war was 1942. The draft was the order of the day for Korea & Vietnam. I think the Senate just voted to allow females being added to the draft rolls. The House has not though.... I don't think there will be a draft or a declaration of war anytime soon - Congress hasn't been inclined to declare war on anybody, including ISIS.

I know what you are saying however one should be careful when threatening an insurrection. Personally I can't see you ever having to contemplate such action, only the truly cynical and frankly, warped individuals would even consider the notion. This doesn't apply to you but there are all kinds out there who would participate in an 'insurrection' for a lot less reason than you would.

    That's interesting.

Sanskrit actually mentioned specific conditions that he would consider tyranny? Do you have any?

I'll open that question to you and Zorroaster since it's his thread, but hey actually I'm curious what any leftist would think. Let me spin this situation for you:

There is an election and a crazed right wing populist wins. We'll call him "Drumpf (guaranteed to trigger you special snowflakes)".

Drumpf's first executive order is to order the arrest and detention of every Muslim and Mexican for adjudication, either deportation or determine if some of them I assume, "are good people."

He then sends the Army in to take over colleges and universities to make sure they are not teaching "foreign doctrines." He arrests professors and issues another executive order to enlist the NSA to scan all social media to determine if anyone has voiced anti Drumpf opinions. These are challenged in the courts of course, but new Supreme Court Justices Omarosa and Busey give the measures the thumbs up.

Since you've flamed Drumpf in the past on twitter and certain political forums, you know eventually you'll be arrested and sent to a yuge re-education camp, the best re-education camp! But then, you are contacted by the Michael Moore Liberation Front. They want you to join their group to oppose the government, and yes, that may involve violence.

    Do you:

    A. Call the Drumpf police immediately to arrest these traitors?
    B. Cooperate and help the new group?

I think (I hope) you understand that by my saying I am willing to die for my rights is for extreme measures. Dying because some crazy stupid people are blocking a highway does not reach the point of dying for my FREEDOMS. Geez

LOL, you didn't even read or respond meaningfully to my list of possible reasons for taking up arms against the federal government, just plowed right on with the "net-edgelord" faux machismo to declare your ironically jingoistic willingness to pull a hangman's lever.

I will plainly speak what I believe. I believe that you are insane, and consumed with hate and bigotry, and absolute intolerance of others views, to the point of making wholesale disparaging statements about people of whom you know nothing, based solely on your own unhinged imaginings.

Was that plain enough for you?

And the secret Service DIDNT just pay a visit to the Republican nominee? Yeah, Texans are superior. And if they were a race, that would make them racists.

As it is, they are only by definition, bigots.

My test would be whether the persons in government attempt to maintain power illegally.

But if it is a duly elected government by the people, that's how democracy works. Attempts to overthrow such a government would be treason. We are a people that chooses governments by ballot, not bullet.

They've been extraordinarily successful, that's for sure. Perhaps, far more than they intended. The American population has taken the bait, and run away with it.

My belief is that this is no longer a governable nation. When you have an ungovernable populace, you can't have a republic - not in the sense the founders envisioned. You can only have an authoritarian government that keeps order through force. This is the direction we have been evolving for a long time.

For my part, I don't believe that electoral processes will have very much effect in the future. I already have a rural location selected for my family. Although I am very far from being a survivalist, I don't really see happy times ahead for urban dwellers. Best to live simply and strive to avoid the worse of the gathering chaos. Insofar as possible.

Thinking realistically, politics itself is part of the distraction you have described. Writing and thinking about it no longer serves much of a useful purpose. So anyway, I'm out of here and good fortune to all.

I do not in any way want to break up this nation as it almost was in the 19 century by Southerners. The last thing we need is another civil war.
