Now, while I consider there is major issue with the way Australian children are schooled, Something I have not considered is the consideration of expectation of the children based upon social and economic standards impact the impressions of the children due to equivalent fellowship of the students next door.

So how this should be addressed???

Before somebody starts ranting about cutting funding
    http://www.afr.com/leadership/innov...growing-in-australias-schools-20160804-gqlcto

So what measures need to be addressed, for me one very important issue, no matter what educational standards are being strived for, stop teaching children WHAT to think. Start teaching children HOW to think, that is, give them the tools to consider things for themselves rather than demanding they believe what we think.

Teachers aren't smart enough to teach in Australia, generally speaking... yes there are exceptions but IMO they are the rarity. That would be where I start. The wages are sufficient given the job security and lifestyle benefits. You don't solve problems by throwing money at it, all that does is create different problems.

    Hi Garry,

You've nailed one of my bug bears too. As an example, climate change science is taught in schools as real. I would far prefer hard science is taught, to then enable kids to look at climate change science and make up their own minds from an informed perspective. And multiculturalism is quite pervasive in schools, both within the curricula, and through mechanisms like "Harmony Day". Multiculturalism is again a political construct.

One of the problems we have is that if you grow up going to school, then go on to uni to secure a teaching degree, then return to a school to teach, it's quite likely you will be left wing. Personally, it took me time in the real world to rub out my lefty edges. Teachers need real world experience - not merely time in our ideologically infested universities to then go on to 'teach' kids their political leanings

    Dot

Oh, I like you Dot... I like you a lot...

Multiculturalism in my opinion is extremely acrimonious in Australia the way it is lorded in this day and age. All these activities of Harmony Day and indigenous week actually marginalise one culture to promote another culture. I do believe that instead of trying to demonstrate the institutional racism of Australia so a few superficial dim-witted do-gooders can over compensate for their racial vilification of others, Australia should be working toward a culture for Australia embraced by all Australians and demonising the racism created by the acquiescence of ignorant people...

Something pointed out to me a while ago, the young generally support the ALP not just because of the point of what they can get from the government but social issues they wish to pretend... possible wish... to believe makes them a better person than their elders. Living in the world, experiencing life and learning to give to the community, not just take brings them to change their support. Generally, those who remain on the welfare teat will remain supporting the social party while others will swing the Coalition.

Now these points seem completely reliant on the teaching as children and young adults travers through the educational system being told the ALP do this and that and the coalition do this and that. Again, told what to think and not how to think. This endemic need to control how others think has created new and even more serious problems for Australia than these politicians and parties even consider. NOW Australia has a generation who are given their opinions and beliefs without thinking for themselves. In other words holding our children back to allow the policy of cutting the intellectual ability of children for partisan political beliefs.

Something bugs me about NAPLAN. Perhaps it's the notion of standardised testing. But when it comes to teaching I'm pretty clear that phonics is the best way to get a child to learn to read. No idea about maths though.

Well said Dot. The politicly correct crap that is taught to our children is appalling. Our schools seriously need to get back to basics.

The real issue is that we've given control of our education system to unaccountable bureaucrats. Schooling should be the domain of the family.

    Totally agree, Dot

So much money is being spent on the ridiculous Safe Schools Program, ESL classes and Deradicalisation Programs , in Primary and High Schools, there seems to be nothing left. We need to get back to the 3 r's and right back to basics. This includes ensuring that our teachers can actually spell, use correct grammar and are proficiently armed before they are sent out.

Sorry Dot I missed this. Still trying to find my way.

ESL = English as a Second Language classes. Don't get me wrong, I think they are a good thing but I also think they should be conducted out of school hours. A local high school near me has multiple teachers presiding over these classes throughout the school day whilst regular classes are way over crowded.

It's a great resource in theory but these teachers should be applied to reducing class numbers in mainstream areas and conducting ESL classes either before or after school hours.

I don't think teaching kids how to tuck/strap a penis and that's it ok for them to wear a dress to school, whether they are male or female, should be high on the curriculum for primary or high schools. In fact, I don't think it should be on the curriculum at all. No wonder our education ranking just keeps slipping.

If I still had kids at school they would probably want to put me down. Nothing else would silence my displeasure with regard this idiocy.

It's about grading of classes and stacking marginalised students together. On the whole Australia's educational outcomes are a reflection of the bigger goings ons in broader community. It has nothing to do with recognising other cultures in the midst of the dominant culture, that's such a backward superficial argument.

Education is about perspectives and the most logical perspective wins the day when all is said and done. A starting point for all learning is based on information collected from a broad range of research.

Was Hitler a bad man? What information are we relying on to derive at this point? Whos versions of events are we trusting?

Australia sits quite good in many respects and that only comes about by a good education system. All the whinging and carrying on about how education is delivered is just the ideologically minded not getting their own way on issues, or bigots if that's what you would like to call it.

Clearly the party line is now to pretend the problem of a ALP policy is to portray the issues as shallow. As the article pointed out, one of the outcomes of the policy and testing is that grouping students: "When less advantaged kids, who also tend to be less academically able, are bunched together they reinforce each other and perform even worse." Clearly this poster had decided this was acceptable outcome as stated.

And of course if that does not work, try and play the race card to shut down things down to a level more understandable to the poster.

Ergo... teach the children what to think because the poster considers it to be a logical progression.

For my understanding, when you teach people to think the same, progression is halted and stagnation begins. BUT hey, it is logical to have unthinking children who can recite verbatim what they are told. Just don't expect them to understand it.
Really, was Hitler a bad man??? Yes, he wore black while all the goodies wore white... Extravagant examples there.

Seriously, even this git should get out of their dream land where what they think is fact and not the fictitious rantings of the deluded. All they seem to have is insults and ignorance, A little immature actually. But that is what trolls do; demonstrate their own form of bigotry even in the hypocrisy of their former comments on the very same subject...

When I went to school (yes they had them back then), we were force fed the views of society. We were taught about bible stories like they were undeniable truth.

Here is some of that truth
Did anyone watch Australian Story last night. I went to school with a boy like that. He was nearly belted to death by his father when he was 14, left home when he was 15, became a "wall boy", committed suicide when he was 23. Nice kid, bright future except for the bigotry, hatred and ignorance shown to him. Multiculturalism, yes hate it. Aberdeen in NSW have a Scottish Games Festival every year, should be banned, bloody poofs running around in skirts, this is Straya, none of that "funny business" here cobber.

I have to smile reading through this thread, how we blame everyone and everything for our children's lack of achievement. The reason Asian children achieve so highly is because of "tiger mums". They are pushed at home to a point I think is unhealthy.
Children left only to the mercy of the school system will never achieve as highly as those pushed at home.... the question is how much is too much and at which point does it negatively influence the child's emotional well being.

I could have posted many things to this but simply put, the Asian community, does not make up the world statistics and the slide of Australian education in comparison of the WORLD.

Simply put, you seem rather more engaged in soliciting emotive responses of insults and accusations than discussing the issue. Just as the previous Troll tried to lay claim to the issues being presented as nothing more than trivial and not worth considering you appear to wish to do the same.

Fact of the matter this is the very issue the ALP previously claimed to be a bench mark of the policy and testing introduced by the ALP. Now when the problems arise it is nothing and nothing needs to be done because... oh that is right, those pesky Asians are pushing their children just too hard...

Since you are amused by the problems of Australian educational system and would rather project the issues on the Asian population I wonder why you decided to comment??? I am sure you will tell us all…

You are spot on witchy poo. I think Asian Americans students have the highest rate of suicide or attempted suicide due to intrusive parents.

Importantly it seems that they use various measures regarding international comparisons. Countries circumstances are completely different. Dependent on economics and thus job availability and demand areas educational standards are going to obviously be different. In the last 15 or so years the mining industry has been dominant. Kids had one dream and that was to get to the mines as soon as was possible. This was quite a broad influence so school wasn't a priority when you could pick up a truck driving job paying $130k a year or working in a kitchen for $80k a year without an OP 1 or ATAR of 99.95. Construction trades were huge in these areas along with flow on effect from the mining economy into many other towns and cities. So priorities had changed from tertiary studies to vocational education.

The looney tunes take the Hanson style view of the world, which is say what you think it looks like without any analysis. Incredibly one dimensional child like thinking. Surely they've got to feel a little embarrassed by their lack of intellect.... : 0

huh??? what the hell are you talking about I mention tiger mums and that's what I get :roflol:

I was perplexed about why you were bothered by my comment and even more so that you're so sure I'd tell you why, then I noticed it's your thread.
My apologies, obviously you only want like minded people commenting in your thread and I will make sure I stay out of yours in future :)

again trying to provoke emotive responses...

pretending to be the victim... I guess your preamble to that comment was all about tiger mums??? Victim not.

Obviously nothing to contribute, as I said before your manner appears the same as the resident bigoted troll. I will be happy not to have that venom sprayed about, shame your friend does not take your example...
