This is the difference we expect to see in the Third World as well, due to free trade.

Crossing border illegally is tough on women seeking the US "free ride." Some don't make it to the taxpayer funded freebie hospital in time enough to pump out their anchor baby.

Yes. While there is uniqueness from state to state, the lone star state stands apart in so many different ways. The one that I love reading about is the electric grid for the contiguous 48: there's the eastern grid, there's the western grid, and then there's Texas. Having several friends that were born and raised in Texas, I can attest to the fact that the independent streak remains strong within the heart of Texans.

Too many "Lib" Californians have moved there within the last ten years. Kind of sad it that respect.

The libs let illegals stream into texas and then mock texas for its bad statistics on crime, health and education that the illegals propagate.

I lived in Texas for over a decade and there's this strange feeling of superiority Texans have. They're convinced that theirs is the best state in the Union with the best people in the country. That was... not my experience. Its okay to like where you live or take pride in your state but Texans occasionally take it to the extreme. Remember Governor Rick Perry - the man who couldn't remember the names of THREE federal government agencies during the Republican debates in 2012? He was the longest serving governor in Texas history and casually shrugged at the idea of Texas seceding from the Union saying, "maybe we ought to look into it". The last time that happened, it resulted in the costliest war in American history with nearly a million Americans dead. Yet Governor Perry shrugged.

Texas (and Perry) gained lots of praise during the "great recession" because almost HALF of all the American jobs being created were in Texas. It sounds impressive but there are a lot of factors from business owners who don't pay illegal immigrants minimum wage to the oil business which has flourished there for nearly a century.

Its a scary place though. Cultural attitudes are hostile to everything from homosexuality to the theory of evolution. There seem to be more guns than people. In the early 2000's, it had two out of the 5 most obese cities in the country. My brother still lives in a quaint suburb in Texas, one that I thought would be safe from crime. Last year, someone broke into his home, stole lots of personal affects, then slipped the garden hose into the house and turned it on to ensure the entire house would be flooded. A friend of mine had his motorcycle stolen from a gated apartment complex.

The vast majority of us (I am Texan) believe we are American before we are Texans and do not wish to leave the U.S. or have anything other than reasonable state pride.

As with everything, the few ignorant people who are anything other than what I described are extremely vocal and just make us look bad.

Having lived in Texas for a decade. From Wichita Falls, to Houston, and then on to Dallas, I came to discover that there are two things you can find in every single city, North, South, East, and West. A topless bar, and a church. Many within spitting distance of each other. Some of them were so nice that it wasn't out of the ordinary to take your wife or girlfriend to dinner at one. The topless bars, that is (I couldn't tell you about the churches, having never set foot in one). That, juxtaposed against the rigid Baptist faith that predominates, was always good for a laugh.

I have been here all my life.

The portrayal of the OP is inaccurate and only reflects but an extremely small percentage of Texans.

I've lived in New York, Illinois, Connecticut, and Texas.

If I was a professional athlete making $10 million per year, I'd live at a beach house on Nantucket. But for regular people making less than $300,000 per year, the quality of life in Texas is superior to any other place in the U.S., especially any place north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

Then you must have been raised in Austin. I was raised in Texas in the 50's where we learned Yexas history before US history. Has Texas gone all liberal?

I am in California so you can't claim I want to brag TX up.

But we have to face some facts.

I have stayed in New York and Ct for short periods. Not long enough to understand them well, but seeing is believing. My times in TX were not long. The only time I slept there at night was while on a train.

I understand that close to the gulf is kind of risky due to hurricanes plus the land is barely above sea level.

I would love to find out where that great quality of life happens to be.

Texas has taken a bite out of California. I can't blame TX for that. I blame my state for not being better. We were once the leaders.

Texas can never be as great as New Jersey.
