Dude unless you started with dead people you usually have at least a coupe of beefs on your rap sheet and usually more before you ever see the inside a prison. That was largely why the boot camp programs of some years back failed. They weren't getting the first time offenders they were designed for but people who'd already done probation or been heavily fined or both for other previous felony convictions.

Most of them have had multiple chances to turn their lives around but just haven't been interested enough to even make a half way decent try at it.

Slavery in this case is Constitutional and they don't have to be paid at all for work assigned but its a way for them to earn money for personal needs outside of getting money placed in your account by family and friends. They could do this give them the minimum wage deducting the cost for their bed, food and medical care and they might get less money.

"This is slavery," said Bonner, who is 51 and serving a life sentence for murder.

I wonder how his victim would feel about it if he/she could speak.

Thing is, this same angst is & has been expressed by inmates with much less offensive offenses than rape, murder, et al.

This has been debated for a while actually but it's in the Constitution for the amendment banning slavery (my US history is rusty but if I'm not mistaken it's between 13 and 15 somewhere). It clearly states that slavery as punishment for crime is legal.

just looked it up, its the 13th so I was right ;). States "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction"

So yea it's slavery, but it's legal.

I'll just put this here. Not really sure where to put it.

Here's the thing, & although long ago I'd given up on educating anyone on any part of this, but what the hell. I have time on my hands, & apparently, I indeed DO relish bashing my head upon the preconceived notions of those who apparently have never, & will never see themselves corralled into the dreaded Convicted Felon stable.

Prisons in this country, are proposed to be Correctional Institutions.

To correct a thing, you must provide opportunities FOR people to not only see the error of their ways, but have a structured path towards that correction. Structure most "Inside" have never seen, due to situation & circumstance.

Instead if Correction, we have seen our prisons devolve back into pure institutions of punishment. Harsh punishment, depending on which state you live in, & what charge brought you to where you are staffed.

Simply defending yourself from unrequited man love, will see your classification be upgraded, to an inmate who is a problem... Even if all your initial charge was simply a roach of weed in some states.

Do I condone, or praise those who buck the system while in it?

    No.

BUT, having been inside, & having learned the reality of any given convict's situation, from my State's POV, I can understand uprisings.

Overcrowding is another issue. This issue breeds instability, & foments dissent, inside institutions where, by & large, Correction means nothing, but simply punishing is king.

Private institutions have been the result of this over crowding, & while personally I have no real experience with them, I can only deduce through talking to those who do have experience in them, the situation isn't better by any stretch of the imagination.

Honestly, draconian drug laws are mostly to blame for most if his. I mean outside of major distribution convictions.

Convictions of addicts to hardcore drugs, along with as few as 2 misdemeanor convictions in some states of weed, see people having their lives destroyed. This is justice?this is correction?

I guess those with the preconceived notion that those in prison are worthy of nothing of just death may be right.

I mean, what really do most ex-cons really have any hope to aspire to?

I have no problem with prisoners being forced to work.

I have a huge problem with private corporations making profits off of their labor.

And you..have a problem with Donald Trump why? Forced Labor is what North Korea's doing. We need to find a way to make the work programs a win-win for both the States and the Inmates. Because I know you hate it, and I know some(many) of them have done reprehensible things but they're human.

What does Donald Trump have to do with my opposition to prisoners being forced to work for private profits?

You don't mind them being forced to work, just for private profits. But it doesn't matter whether they're forced to work for a corporation or the State, it's still indenture and it's wrong. We can create a prison system that works and doesn't make us North Korea-lite.

I heard of a prison in Maine, I believe, where some of the prisoners are getting rich. They have a prison store that sells goods that the prisoners make.

Bonner gets $2/day plus 3 meals, air conditioning, weight room, free healthcare, and cable TV. I would only give him 3 meals and a secure place to sleep. I hope he likes bologna sandwiches.

Here is how the word imprisonment is defined in law.

The prisoner is correct he is being treated like a slave because he is a slave by law. His argument is frivolous and won't stand up in court. Laughable really arguing to have rights when clearly he does not.

What the hell are you talking about? US prisons are the worst in the developed world. Look at prisons in Europe. Look at prisons in the UK. Look at prisons in any developed nation. And yeah, the Japanese have a different culture and are not very violent - and look at things like their train etiquette. The low amount of violence in Japanese society and prisons .... what the hell are you even talking about? "There is no violence because the COs see themselves as educators" followed by "They take a very very firm approach to their prisoners, right down to how they sleep at night" ..... my brain just exploded. WTF?

The reason Europe has a better prison system is because the focus is on rehabilitation, not punishment - and Europeans treat their poor like human beings - but in USA the focus is on punishment and you treat your poor like animals. Part of the reason USA has such a huge problem with crime/violent crime is because USA treats the poor as if they were animals and when you treat people like animals they are going to act like animals.

Look how well Anders Breivik is treated in European prison. look, Ireland didnt even want to send a terrorist to USA because the Irish consider the US prison system to be inhumane -

    http://www.irishexaminer.com/ireland/mans-us-extradition-over-terror-refused-332215.html

USA treats prisoners as if they are animals and we all know it because you send your prison documentaries to us to watch. We have all seen it. Look at Sheriff Joes tent city prison thing and contrast that with a prison in Norway -

    http://newsexaminer.net/crime/tent-city-closing-this-december-after-22-years/

They do deserve to be treated like human beings dont they? they are human beings arent they?

See European society treats people - and all people with a lot more respect - especially the poor. Just look at US welfare benefits and healthcare. Nations like Canada, Australia and UK are more in-line with European thinking on social responsibility so our healthcare systems and welfare systems are much closer to Europe than the US, even though much work has been done to Americanize our systems and societies.

See in other nations we do not get all excited when some kid has stolen a vehicle - and we do not chase it with a helicopter and film it and use the footage as BREAKING NEWS - and our police actually try not to hurt or kill criminals if they can avoid it. If some kid dies from a police chase in Australia we all ask why the police had to chase them and make the situation worse. It is just an insured stolen car after all and the person driving it does not deserve to die, and are probably just a stupid kid/kids or a pathetic low level criminal. But in USA you go to this stuff as breaking news and then you make these funny doco things that are entire shows dedicated to police chases where the cops seem to be trying to kill a guy because he has stolen a car - and maybe robbed someone. To most people that is very weird. You make all this 'Americas Dumbest Criminals' stuff so we can all laugh at criminals seriously injuring themselves or being seriously injured by police. So you have developed this culture that places no value on the life of poor criminals ( and it is only poor criminals you treat this way. If a wealthy person commits a serious crime you all debate about if they should be fired or not - and most of you will say, no, thats a bit harsh. BUT LETS KILL SOME POOR KID THAT STOLE A CAR!!! ) And then you act shocked that you have a problem with police violence? I thought was supposed to be funny. But it is just blacks that US police are violent to is it? Hmm. I really dont think they care if the poor kid that stole a car is black or white - they just want to kill someone. Or taser someone. Something. Shoot someone. Throw someone to the ground and stand on their heads.

I am not anti-US cops and I do not blame the US cops. The US cops are trained this way. This is how you deal with the 'public' in USA. This is how police are trained to deal with the 'public'. See wealthy Americans do not see themselves as being part of the 'public' so they arent going to get caught up in any of this stuff. The police work for them and the 'public' is the enemy. Especially the poor. So now you pull the rug out and call all US cops racists. It is ridiculous. But the reason they are trained this way is because of how US society treats the poor as animals and puts no value on their lives.

In my opinion all prisoners certainly should work so they are not a cost to the state. And I do not think they should be paid. But I do not think they should be treated like animals. I am also not against solitary confinement as long as the cell they are confined has the facilities they need and they have something to do. But I do not see why US prisoners have to be treated so badly and have to put up with such dangerous environments. Why should a guy have to be put in a cell with six other guys that are violent - and left unsupervised?

Most people in normal countries do care if prisoners starve or die. We dont have the death penalty and we feed them. And we also do not think that it is ok to mistreat people just because they are stupid. And we care if people get raped in jails. We care about the safety of prisoners in normal countries. See we wouldnt be any better than the criminals if we had your attitude would we?

In future society the state will not use any violence. Police will use non-violent weapons to detain criminals - and there will be no death penalty. The focus of the prison system will be rehabilitation - and for the most part anyone that commits a crime in civilized future society will be considered to be insane because there will be no reason for anyone to commit crime. The state will have unending moral high ground. USA needs to start treating criminals/prisoners better - not worse. And all of them - not just the black ones. But in my opinion this has nothing to do with solitary confinement or requiring prisoners to work. US society just needs to stop treating the poor as if they are animals.

Dont you think humans should have to work? If prisoners do not have to work then why do the rest of us? In Australia the unemployed must look for work and if they find a job that is suitable they must take it and if they do not look for the required amount of jobs per week, and attend interviews and take any suitable work the government will cut off their welfare and leave them with no money for food or rent. Is this unreasonable? Arent unemployment benefits temporary in USA? And dont unemployed Americans have to look for work and find a job before unemployment benefits expire? Dont we all have to work? If we didnt have to work then the state would just send us our benefits and tell us to take it easy right? So you support this 'living wage' stuff do you? You dont think any of us should have to work? Because we are human?

If you think about it - the UN human right thing says that we all should have shelter and food right? It doesnt say we have to work for it. So all western nations that make unemployed people look for work - or only pay temporary unemployment benefits are committing human rights abuses. The entire capitalist system is one massive human rights abuse and all of us wage slaves are capitalist slaves because if we do not work then we become homeless and starve. The capitalist governments seem to think that funding charities covers them but does it really? does it really? The capitalist state will allow you to become homeless and starve if you do not work. They even want mental people to be 'functional'. At the end of the day we are all slaves unless we have economic independence and have escaped the rat race somehow. The UN human rights nonsense - that was actually written by capitalists and has all this bullcrap about private property - says that we have the "right" to work - but it doesnt say we dont have the right not to work. But since it says we all should have food and shelter - then that should include everyone right - including those of us that do not wish to work. We are all human right?

edit - See I do not want to work. If the right thing came along then yes I would be interested - but mostly I would prefer to stay at home. I hate getting up and having to go to work. I would prefer the government to just send me enough money for my daily bread. But apparently I have to go to work. What the %$%$ right? What am I? Some kind of slave? plus these capitalists hate me because I am poor - and they expect me to want to contribute to their system? Yeah right. How long do they want me to go to work for again? 8 hours a day? Holy %$%$! That is worse than communists. At least communists only wanted 6 hours of labour per day out of us. And have you seen what capitalists are paying unskilled workers if an unskilled worker can actually get a job in front of a backpacker, Mexican or guest worker? %$%$ all. i cant even afford shelter if a have a job since I am an unskilled worker. No chance of ever buying a house. I cant afford healthcare - I cant afford a %$%$ing thing. And the capitalist wants me to go to work for that? Hmm. They are lucky I do not revolt. And they should pay me not to. Its not like I am asking as much as a Hun would. Just enough to live, and have shelter and food. maybe a little hooker money. Is that really so much for a human to ask?

Why should criminals not be forced to give restitution to the society that they have harmed?

I don't know about this case, but supermax level violent criminals should definitely get the death penalty. These are people who cannot be "rehabilitated".

Not necessarily college. My cousin was in prison for the third time (he was a drug addict) when they finally put him in a welding program. He came out with a skill and a certification. It completely turned his life around. Sometimes "teaching prisoners how to stop committing crimes" means giving them a viable alternative.
