Should California desalinate ocean water!

  1. NO!!!! That would be evil terraforming!!!!

I have no clue how you are ever going to compost an entire pasture in tea. There was an old theory known as "Rain follows the plow" but I think the dust bowl blew this theory out the window. I do suspect that the big river projects I have proposed, especially coupled with an agricultural expansion, would increase rainfall in California and Nevada, but if the river stopped, I think the effect would stop.

Maybe you could plant tea and then turn it under?

Compost tea is a mixture of compost and water. It is usually mixed in buckets or barrels and used to water and fertilize plants. Manure tea is a mixture of manure and water used for the same purpose. Smart dairy farmers dispose of their waste manure on pastures to fertilize the pasture grasses. It isn't tea for drinking.

A major problem in the Sahara region and most drier areas of the world is that they are populated by people who herd goats. They herd goats because goats are just about the only animal that can eat almost anything; very good if you're living in a desert. But that is also the problem with goats; they eat almost anything and they eat it down to the roots and dig at the roots and eat them also. So plants that could possibly thrive in a desert environment and therefore reduce the process of desertification are being eaten by goats who therefore accelerate the process of desertification. Eliminate the goats and install desalinization plants near the deserts and global warming would be slowed because you could turn the deserts green eliminating much of the "heat overflow" that emanates from deserts. Also interesting fact look at the deserts of the world. Most of them border oceans. We don't have a water problem or a desert problem we have a salt problem. Build desalinization plants near deserts and desertification and global warming will both be slowed down. Oh yes, turn the goat herders into farmers.

China solved the goat problem by putting the goats in dry lots and bringing the forage to the goats. My goats are on drylot now because of our drought and they are thriving. I have a lot of underbrush that needs cleaned up and I throw it to the goats over the fence. I kill two birds with one stone. Mob grazing is also a very good tool. The pasture is divided into small paddocks and the livestock spends little time in one area. This gives time for the land to recover. You should look at the amazing progress made in the Loess region of China.

h ! Feed lots. Yes, what a great idea. And the goats can still be used for their great munch down the undergrowth talent but not to the extent that they destroy the plant life root system. Excellent !

All those crying liberals on Nov 8th really could have put a dent in it...

Last I heard California was on a coast, desalination is viable, expensive to start, but how many times do we need to hear about Californian's whining about droughts, when there is a solution right there? Not like we haven't heard this before, its more frequent than major quakes out there...

And when it comes to financing it.....
up here in Canada back in 1940 Prime Minister Mackenzie King
faced the challenge of financing our participation in WWII.

He got some advice and came up with the idea of using our Bank of Canada,
that since 1913, (if I remember correctly) has been owned by all Canadians, to make loans for
infrastructure projects, and the production of guns, tanks, planes and ships.... . at zero percent interest,
or at most one percent, because this benefited all Canadians. Losing the war due to a lack of
money to invest in the necessary equipment.... would have been astonishingly unwise.

That policy that he began was used until 1974 and I believe that financing large scale desalination of ocean water for
California could be the emergency that will give President Donald Trump the leverage he needs to
deal with some issues in Federal Reserve Policy.

California isn't poor, just poorly managed and governed. They could easily afford to start the process and if through their own folly couldn't complete the process help could be offered. There isn't much need for any outside reform, and I suppose the federal government might have some small interest in helping, well maybe the next time Democrats are in the White House...

To be perfectly honest the California drought is lot a big concern for me right now. Here in Alabama we are suffering from an exceptional drought with no end in sight. I am having a drought problem of my own. I have been hauling tons and tons of horse manure on to my pastures and laying it right on top of my dry land. I am covering this with spoiled hay. If I get any rain at all I will seed it with a drought tolerant cover crop my goats can eat. Looking around I have noticed that some of our native grasses still have some green. It looks like a fescue but I am not sure. Most grasses are either dead or dormant. I may get some water from the river and get enough on the prepared ground to geminate some seed. Hopefully the water holding capacity of the manure and straw will get it off to a good start. Then even with lower than average rainfall I can get patches of cover going. This I can harvest and feed my animals. I am still looking at drought resistance and biomass production. Spring will be the time to move the goats to another lot and seed the lot they are on now. Till then it is hay and forage gathered around the farm. I can probably get enough to keep them going till spring. And since livestock prices are so low due to the drought I am also buying stock when I can. If the rain returns I stand to make a little money. I knew this drought was coming so I was not totally unprepared.

Experts in California should be aware that Israeli scientists already
    found answers to the issues.

It doesn't have to be ocean water. Most people don't realize that there are very large pockets of saline under parts of the continental US. Occasionally some hapless farmer or jerk-leg driller who doesn't know what they are doing will hit one, and contaminate fresh water supply with the saline water for which there will be a dire financial penalty that will keep them eating beans and cornbread for the rest of their lives.

People are moving here from all over the U.S. I see license plates from NY, IL, and CA every day. I don't think it's possible to stop the migration.

I can't deny that large scale desalination of ocean water is expensive at this time but
it certainly is getting more and more efficient.

The time may come when environmentalists don't fight so vehemently against
    desalination projects.

I don't think California has the half a trillion dollars it would likely end up costing, though voters would be told it only cost $1 billion when they voted on it.

Every cubic meter of ocean water that is desalinated and added to the water table
of California is good news for residents of Florida, Georgia, New Orleans and New Jersey.
