It is not even really "salt water". The water there is not just salty, it is 25% saltier than the ocean is, so not even salt water species can live there.

And the salts there are mineral salts, high in metal content. And since there is no runoff any pollutants that have gone into it (fertilizer, insecticides, sewage, etc) have only increased as the decades passed.

In fact, the only remaining animal above that of microbes, brine shrimp, and worms that lives in the sea is the Tilapia, a non-native species introduced into the sea in the last century as a game fish. But it is expected that they will die off in in less than 50 years as the water gets even more salty and polluted.

And adding ocean water will still not help the problem, only accelerate the death of the lake. There is no outlet for the water to flow out of, so adding sea water will only cause it to gain salt even faster.

Yes, but it has become saltier over time due to dehydration.
Scientist never believe it would last this long, yet it did.
With a surplus of water California is just diluting the Pacific Ocean.
Better to dilute the Salton Sea!

We disagree, so take the last word please.
The Salton Sea has lasted beyond anyone's scientific predictions. It has created ecosystems. Yes it was an oopsy
but after 100 years or so, shouldn't we keep it?

Today, or yesterday, Governor Brown of this Greatest State soon to CalExit has called for increasing reservoirs and reducing lost fresh water.

And that's the way it is, February, 24th, 2017.

    Flood Plains are like Grazing
in that persons living in metropolitan areas void of nature do not appreciate their value.

In the Greatest State of California we have wild seeds of different species that do not
sprout unless drenched with water, or singed by fire. And similar to the plains States, some
ecosystems do better with grazing as "grasses" evolved to survive and improve.

Similar to grazing, the value of flood plains are - very under valued.

Millions of illegal immigrants appreciate California giving them their natural resources. The citizens don't mind having their water rationed.

    I agree!
And some of those fields might be used as flood plains if everyone is willing.

Anything is better than draining it to the ocean in concrete channels.

    Why not?

A pointless destructive failure of an idea that only has the result of making somebody feel good sounds like a perfect thing for California.

I think you missed the sarcasm, is alright.

And California will no more build another dam than they will a new power plant. In fact, they are actually planning on eliminating (or are in the process of - already have) several dams in the state.

We can make room via CalExit and kicking the Federals off some 40% of California land. View attachment 47324

calexit is a very dumb idea..

we have plenty of room now..sure we don't have to have so much national forest land in our state and we could use that space..ever hike in the sierra's?..I have ..and for 2 weeks straight never saw a building a road or a person in some spots..it is massive...and i would hike about 25 miles a day...

Almost every night I pray that CalExit happens. I want California to break away from the rest of the country so badly it almost hurts.

That way those of us up North can break away and form the State of Jefferson. We can then return to the United States and determine how we want to live and how we want to spend out own state tax dollars. We tan take back the property and resources stolen from us over the last century, and determine how we want to use them best.

And we sure as heck could not do much of a worse job. Oroville Dam needs what, $300+ million in repairs? And Moonbeam is saying that the Feds need to give him over $600 billion because dams are in risk of collapse all over the state.

You will have to do something, because a big chunk of a state breaking away actually has historical precedent. At that point Jefferson would quickly become a fairly wealthy state from 2 immediate exports to the "New California Republic".

    Water and Power.

So I for one say "Long Live the New California Republic".

Not if you are like me and live in the far North of the state. Up here a great many have their own idea of what "CalExit" would be.

Ask us, it means exiting California. As well as Oregon, since a number of their counties have been growing increasingly angry at their state for similar reasons.

No, my problem is not really with DS, as much as Sacramento.

If people think DS is bad, that is nothing like having to live under Sacramento.

Full of special interest projects given money to take resources and money from rural areas and drop them into pet special looney projects like criminal defense funding for illegal immigrants facing deportation, shopping carts for the homeless, and decriminalizing everything from contract killings and theft under $1,000 to requiring $2,500+ to register out of state cars and special gas used nowhere else and making it the most expensive in the country (even though we are also one of the largest gas producers in the country).
