Each year terrorist attacks kill far fewer Americans than do auto accidents, drug overdoses, or even lightning strikes. Yet in the allocation of government resources, preventing terrorist attacks takes precedence over preventing all three of the others combined. Why is that?

My take: The U.S. government refuses to abide by the standards it regularly forces other countries to abide by. The U.S. routinely murders innocent civilians and then claims, "Oh, well, it was an accident." When the chickens come home to roost then we will be aware that those victims will strike back their way.

People have control over certain things (auto accidents, overdosing on drugs, standing under a tree in a lightning storm). Government is of little help there.

But government has a role in keeping ISIS and al Queda out of the U.S. ... I can't do that by myself.

More public service announcements warning people about lightning strikes.

The murdered victims you describe will not strike back - they are dead.

You're more likely to end up in the ER with a pogo stick-related injury, win a gold medal at the Olympics, or get killed by a meteorite than get struck by lightning in the U.S.

I think that the effort spent at additionally educating people about lightning strikes would be better aimed at other, more pressing issues.

which will do what? "hey if that lightning bolt hits it you you will die." "I know that." Doesn't seem very effective to me.
