I think the dude was a wimp. If he can't take an insult without hitting someone he is weak and has no pride. The woman was just an ignorant... well you know. I wonder what judge Joe Brown would say.

I don't care how a white person would use the word. It will be considered wrong. I was always taught... sicks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me.

Well, people react in different ways. If you insult the wrong person, you might get your face re-arranged. Our words have consequences. And, as I said, there is no way to know how another person will react to being insulted. You cannot go around giving other people a bad time, and expect them to stand there, silently, and take your abuse. Sooner or later someone will get angry and try to rip your face off.

And just because you think his behavior was wrong, it may well be exactly what is expected, in the area he comes from. I know places where, if you DO NOT respond physically to insults, if you allow someone to insult you and get away with it, the people in the area will consider you a coward. In cases like this, a person will respond violently, immediately, and won't give two shytes about your feelings on the matter.

Finally, it's fine for you to take issue with the man's choice to slap the woman, but try to be reasonable. I would bet that you would NEVER call that man a "wimp" in person, nor would you tell him he's "weak and has no pride." If you did, you'd most likely end up black and blue, and spend a week in bed (in the best scenario). So, even in internet posts, it's best to speak somewhat reasonably, if you expect to be believed.

You are correct. I dont insult people i n person. And I don't invite conflict. I don't think he acted rationally. He should think of the possible consequences of his actions.

Let me put it this way. You don't hit people because they say things you don't like. Especially a man striking a woman. Where I come from it ain't done.

In the sub-culture in which he lives, maybe he DID act rationally. That's why he made sure the door was open before unloading on the hag. He made sure he had a quick get away. Who knows, the people on the vehicle could have jumped him, or he might have been trapped for long enough for the police to see what was going on, etc. In his world, the behavior you are condemning might be considered very rational.

There are many sub-cultures within our greater society. If you get into what seems an innocent situation, in a culture you don't understand, you can easily get yourself killed. People in very poor areas, segregated areas, prisons, gang-infested areas, and many more, all have their own cultural norms. Violate them and you'll pay a price.

I'm not trying to get on your case. But things are often more complicated than they appear on the surface. The black guy at the center of this conversation has a lot of history that determines the way he sees the world. He was upset for reasons many of us would never understand. But it makes sense to him, and that history is what he acted on.

    Exactly, where you come from.

But, we know nothing about where he comes from. And he has his own reasons for acting the way he does.

Ya, let's just continue to make excuses for bad behavior. If where he comes from it is okay to sell drugs I guess that somehow makes it acceptable? And if where he comes from it is morally acceptable to loot and burn, that's okay too?

I'm not making excuses for anything. I'm just pointing out that each of us has to survive in our own reality.

And that survival is much more difficult for some people than for others.

Without understanding a few basic differences there is no hope of ever having any kind of honest dialogue.

You seem to live in a bubble, and you don't want anything disturbed. Life's not like that. Life is messy.

I am for equal rights and equal responsibility. Everyone should have equal rights under the law. But the law should also be equally applied to everyone. I have lived a long time and have known many people from many cultures. And you may not believe this but most people want the same things. Of course I don't want my life disturbed. I don't think anyone does. But I try to be realistic. I also live in a rural, albeit diverse community. I don't live in a bubble. I live in a house.

Sure, but what happened to that whole "sticks and stones"-thing? I am not saying anyone should have to just stand there and take sh-t. But, hitting a woman is never acceptable imo.

If she calls you ugly names, you be the grown up and just walk away.

****** doesn't incite violence. It only does when a white person says it. I hear black people saying it constantly. It isn't The breach of Peace when they do it. So it isn't when anyone else does it. Unless the law is to apply differently based on race. That would be systemic racism.

No these aren't fighting words. The phrase "******s should all die" or "lets go on a ****** hunt" would be fighting words.

But calling someone a ****** or a poo poo head or any other childish nonsense isn't a breach of peace.

The man hitting her was a violent assault and absolutely was a breach of peace.

What pathetic man-child becomes violent because someone calls him a name? He either needs to return to kindergarten and learn all about sticks and stones or go to jail until he can behave like a civilized human.

I know blacks who regard even another black using it as being very offensive, the latest thinking is that no other race or ethnicity accepts pejoratives for themselves even among themselves, so neither should they.

A pejorative is a pejorative, it is almost the definition of a 'fighting word'
