We’ve all seen this meme around the interwebs, right?

“Legal gun owners have over 200 million guns… and 12 trillion rounds of ammo. Seriously, people… if we were a problem, you’d know it!”

I’ve also seen one that claims we have over 400 million guns and 24 trillion rounds of ammunition. The fact is, while there is no definitive way to tally all the firearms in the United States, it is commonly accepted and reported that there are roughly 300 million firearms in the hands of law-abiding Americans.'

Someone estimated 1.12 guns per person. I go with that.
For every gun used to commit a murder yesterday, about 16,000,000 were not.

 

They should try the gun buyback program in Mexico for a start. All the millions of people involved with helping the Drug Cartels should be more than happy to turn in all their illegal guns.

 

24 trillion rounds of ammo - that's enough to kill everyone on this planet 3400 times over.

 

The last known estimates that were consulted placed currently owned firearms between three hundred million, and five hundred million. Figures by the FBI regarding the number of background checks performed prior to firearm sales suggests there are approximately forty one thousand more firearms being bought on a daily basis. That approximation is based on the belief that ninety percent of the reported background checks completed allowed a sale to go through, and that only one firearm was purchased per sale.

 

But, but...they are mostly owned by the same dozen or so gun nuts don't you know....

 

Then these approximate forty one thousand individuals in the united states, must truly be the most financially successful individuals in the world, in order to amass collections of such impressive size. One cannot help but wonder what the secrets of such financial success are.

I also note there are still gun control advocates about. If guns were the cause of crime, given that much ammo should't they be extinct by now?

 

I don't buy the 12 trillion rounds of ammo figure, at least in civilian hands. Assuming 600 million guns, that means we have 20,000 rounds of ammunition per gun. Makes no sense at all. I do believe that there are probably 600 million guns in civilian hands. 1,000 rounds per gun would mean 600,000,000,000 (600 billion) rounds of ammunition. 12 trillion is 20 times that much.

 

Not a very accurate figure, no doubt.

It's a bit late for gun control, with that amount of hardware around the place. I'm glad I don't live there.

Actually I did live there, but that was back in day before guns were so common.
