There some truth that certain ethnic groups like certain things more than others. I recall in the Air Force that Blacks preferred menthal cigarettes more than Whites. They tended to like Salems, Kools, Newports.. even the Vietnamese Mama Sans figured out that Blacks liked menthol. Even they joked about it.

I thought that I remember Blacks liking green coolaid or line green soda.
Southern boys like Mountain Dew. Texans liked that piss water called Dr. Pepper and piss beer called Lone Star. Southern boys preferred Busch beer to Bud or Miller.

    Hey different tastes !,

Hey the Irish took over the police and fire departments years ago so they brought the bagpipes in. It's not American but if we are to accept the fact that various groups brought their culture here and some of those foreign cultural practices took hold. So I suspect that one can be accused of being a liberal for saying that various immigrants brought their culture here.

So bagpipes are nitvAmerican but they can be Afro-American ---LOL.

The fireman should sue, let Detroit explain how a fruit is racist and what food would have been politically correct and why.

It isn't. It is a fruit.
If you wan't to make something racist out of it, you have to dig back into history - back prior to the 1930's - and pull it out into the light again. To me, it is more of an indication of how far people will go to keep their racist scenario alive.

Bravo to the firemen who stuck up for the guy.

the people who fired this guy associated a watermelon with blacks and fired someone else for it. If they didn't associate blacks with watermelons then they would not have seen a problem with the fireman bringing a particular fruit to the station.

Shoot I love the fact someone didn't know. The faster these stereotypes die the triggering can die with them.

if someone brought donuts on the first day to the police force could they be fired?

sounds like someone was over-reacting in this instance....

It's because the racist liberal who fired the guy is the problem, which should be obvious to you.

Only a liberal would fire someone for bringing in a "racially sensitive fruit".

well that's probably true, a republican would more likely be the racist, not the one falsely calling someone a racist, so I will have to give you that one

The republican would definitely be called a racist by your average liberal, whether he's actually racist or not.

Nazi and misogynist would probably be applied as well.

In this case, if the barely adult recruit how NO IDEA a watermelon was racist(to insane people), how could he possibly be racist? The racist is the person who sees fruit as insulting and injects their bias into something that was never intended. Now if the kid told them all, "I brought this because you know, you guys REALLY like Watermelon", that's a different story. Now that's rude due to the ol' fashioned stereotype. Stupid but some people get insulted by stupid ****. But seriously, who doesn't like watermelon?

This is the liberal platform. Liberals keep telling us all WHY everything is racist. Should Jews get insulted if a goyim friend suggests Chinese on Sunday for dinner. Pssssst. We REALLY love eating Chinese food on sundays if you didn't know. It's our little secret. And we love bagels and lox for brunch too. If someone non Jewish brought it over for a get together, I'd be VERY offended, let me tell you=) Actually, I'd be in heaven.

I think Italians really love pizza too and Polish love perogies. Better be careful suggesting to them we should eat it. Might be raaaaciiiissssssst.

Ok gotcha! Bad enough that they saw it as an outright "horrible" racist act but to fire the guy over it is absurd. All of this when a Detroit is trying to come back from despair, fiscal depravity, and White flight, and just plain crap... as they say in the old country..... dumkopfs !,!!

More than likely he didn't realize he was going to an all black firehouse (After all, he was going there, himself), or he wasn't aware of the stereotype trope. Hard to believe the latter, in my experience, but I'm probably twice his age.

What happened though is "someone" complained and that started the ball rolling and on the surface, it does look like the complaint is accurate. One of those wrong time, wrong place situations. But the people who count stood up and rectified the situation. It's all about the intent, not the words (or in this case, the act). Growing up for me, saying "your mama" as an insult was literally fighting words, but wasn't offensive in itself. It was the intent.

As for how watermelon became a black stereotype....

I can see it fine. The site just discuss whether or not watermelon is a "fruit" or a "vegetable." No biggie....

Too funky. I doubt anyone involved realized or even know why/how watermelon became a stereotype trope.
