Woman mauled to death by her pit bulls (happens with all breeds, right ?!)

Bethany Stephens’ father went looking for his daughter after he hadn’t seen her in over a day. So he decided to seek her out in a wooded area in Goochland, Virginia, where the 22-year-old often took her two pit bulls out for a stroll, according to Richmond.com. That’s when he said he found the two dogs “guarding” the body of his daughter, who police say was mauled and killed by the pets.

I feel bad this happened, but pit bulls (as my previous thread so clearly proves) are not house pets. They are war dogs and can turn on anyone and anything. Pits are 6% of all breeds but over 70% of all attacks and deaths.

Two things; first, why did it take the police an hour to arrive to a murder?

Second, and back on topic, are pit bulls more aggressive than other dogs or are they more dangerous because of their strength? I think chihuahuas are quite aggressive but don't have the muscle to back it up.

Also, one thing I've noticed about dogs is their mob mentality. If one dog gets irritated, especially the alpha dog, then the others get irritated and join the frenzy. I don't think I can recall a dog going bonkers and another dog just sitting there and doing nothing.

 

we see similar patters of behaviors in certain human ethnic groups too - it's a culture/genetic thing.

This sweet girl would not be dead if this had not been a pit.

 

I'm not sure where I stand on pit bulls. I think other dogs are either just as strong or just as aggressive but might not have within them both traits to the same degree. I know Rotts and Dobermans are quite strong and can be aggressive, but I can't recall hearing about a mauling by them. Since there were two pits attacking this girl, do you think one just went off the rails and their other instinctively joined in?

 

Pits have three traits which are horrible together;

1) Very powerful bite
2) Very aggressive/violent when scared
3) One of the most cowardly dog breeds

 

We finally agree on something. Have been advocating that you shouldn't be allowed to own pit bulls or Rottweiler's if you live in a subdivision.

 

Cowardly? How so? Do you mean they respond to their cowardice by attacking?

I'm not discounting that pits are dangerous, we've all heard the stories. But I've seen them be quite docile and loving, too. With that said, do you think their aggressive nature is developed by humans and/or can it be controlled by humans?

 

Yes. Pit bulls are naturally afraid of other dogs and people who it does not know. It is an un-trusting breed that is brutally violent and strong when provoked. The slightest discomfort in setting can trigger a pit. The other thing is their clamp jaw - which doesn't yield. You damn need have to kill a pit if it doesn't want to release its grip. It is a horrible pet and has no business in a civilized society. It is a nice dog to the ones it cares for, but even then - as this case shows - that's not guarantee.

 

Name one other breed that is willing/able to do this to its owner it supposedly loves !

 

The problem often times is there was more than one pit bull. Ive seen both sides of the argument up close and personal so Im not exactly sure where I stand. Responsible owners who can manage the breed is reallly important. They can be really sweet dogs though.
I did have a friend who owned 2. She had both for years. The one pit always protected her child. One day they were having the typical argument parents and kids have when one dog jumped at her and bit her thigh. She was clearly alpha in that house, not sure why the dog acted that way. Wolf mixes aren't a good idea either, or only with certain owners who live far out somewhere.

I would like to see all pit bulls required by law to be neutered or spade at the tax payers cost, and those found in violation to be severely fined and their dogs removed. They have caused far too much maiming and death to continue with this breed. I just think human compassion is often so misguided when it comes to putting a price on animals over innocent children and people in general.

 

And yet ... when I point out similar statistical deviations WRT black/white violence I'M A RACIST.

On topic: Pits ain't pets. Be afraid. Keep your hand on your pistol like I do when I encounter them.

 

Most dogs are only aggressive for dominance reasons and they quit/backoff once the threat is submissive. Pitbulls on the other hand usually kill the victim, either they trigger a predatory hunting mode or they lack the genetic trigger to stop. Either way, they're the most dangerous dog to own and I don't think anyone with basic reasoning can say that all of the cases were from neglect.

Sarcasm? She looks a bit like trash. However, the story is still horrific and sad and nobody should die like that.

I have no idea why people insist on owning dogs like this. It used to be the redneck trash that was drawn to them, now it seems to be trendy for bleeding heart liberals to "rescue" them. Crazy.

 

Personally, if I wanted an attack dog, I'd go with a 200 pound dachshund. Incredibly loyal, and will fight to the death. Scared of nothing, including people and dogs ten times their weight. When I was a kid ours would tangle with both giant raccoons and 100 pound german shepherds. One shepherd came into our yard and was close to attacking me. Our weiner unleashed jihad on that dog. It was a sight to behold.
