if you actually need the fishing gear and/or snares, you're going to need a LOT more tools/gear/materials, and they will need to be large, heavy items. :) snares have to have one way sliding loops. Treble hooks can catch game or birds, you know.

The other day, I saw a water purifier at Walmart that filters 100,000 gallons of water. Not sure how it works, but that's a lot of water. Just fill your bottle, screw it on, and you're good to go.

looks like crap from a crackerjack box to me. Take a rental satellite phone and a pistol and you'll be WAY ahead.

All of these items...along with the post above can be used as a animal feed. I know a pig and a goat will eat them. And a pig will feed you for a long time. But you need a lot of salt. And I think salt should near the top of any survival list. IMHO if you are going to last very long you need salt. You can even preserve plant matter with it. Just my opinion

Having a place to go is one of the most important aspects to survival in a SHTF situation.
I have a 50 acre property in the Texas hill country that has plenty of wildlife on it, a creek for water and plenty of wood.

On the subject of firearms, they are a great equalizer....but they are loud. I would suggest getting several crossbows, high powered air rifles or bb guns. These can be used to hunt small game with little noise and are relatively inexpensive.
I have water storage barrels and food storage barrels. Rice is one of the best staples for a long term survival wituation as it is a great filler...the last time I bought a 50 lb bag of rice it was like $23.
    Anyway, my 2 cents worth.

You can drink your own urine in an emergency but only a bit. The darker it is the more urea and electrolytes. You cannot drink too much just like sea water. Sea water is safe for a bit but eventually you will raise your sodium level to dangerous levels. The older you are the less you can consume as your glomerular filtration rate goes down as does your ability to excrete salt. If a cup or two can get you to water then go for it. A pebble in the mouth will help dryness up to a point. You need a hard less porous rock to big to inhale. Don't spit much if at all. You make a lot of mucus and fluids during a day. Don't waste it. If you have a cold swallow it don't blow or spit if you are in water conservation mode. Gross but it will make a difference.

BTW, any plastic will work for a still but clear IS best. Line the bottom with dark plastic and the top with clear if you can. If you have no plastic for the bottom then use something cotton as clean as possible. You can suck the water from the cotton. Line the bottom with pebbles if possible if you must us cotton.

A small bottle of bleach say 1" x 2-3" is great for disinfecting water. Setting water out in sunlight helps although don't count on it sterilizing water.

Urine is sterile at first when it "comes out".

But getting the salts out of it requires some form of distillation.

Bear Grylls has all sorts of makeshift stills on some of his shows that show how to do this.

Or you can make a still out of a tea pot and tubing.

Pure water is one of the most important things needed for life.

You can only go about 3 days without water.

Best thing is to store it, and have a water filter so that you can replenish your storage supply.

Drinking piss is only going to kill you.

Where I live there is a stream that flows down from the mountains and through town and into a creek that flows into a river that flows into a big lake.

The stream is always flowing spring, summer, and fall. And in winter it is frozen because there is snow on the ground.

We are lucky to have plenty of water -- all that we can drink. But a water filter is still needed to make sure it is not contaminated by deer sh!t.

Most healthy young people can imbibe a reasonable amount but everyone is different. You can consume some without worrying. You aren't going to get hypernatremic quickly unless you're guzzling it. If you know your GFR is good then fine. If it's 30-60 then I'd be very careful. So you don't need a still if you're talking about a short time and/or distance to water. Caution is the tale. Anything more than a little bit requires more pure and sterile water. If you have a still or a filtration straw etc then you shouldn't consider drinking urine. It tastes like piss. :)

Agreed. Not work taking a change unless you heat it for awhile.....if you can. I've drank out of streams a lot and never gotten sick but I've had dysentery so it's not worth the risk if you can avoid it.

Purslane. You probably have some growing in your driveway, or garden. Leaves taste really nice on a hot day - kind of 'lemony' or 'refreshing'.
Do not eat if you see hairs on the stems - that's a different plant.

Drinking urine is not an option, it is toxic and a potential source of a plethora of bad stuff.

Urine should be processed for its chemical properties, Nitrates for fertilizer among others.

Look into long term methods of stock piling water and distillation methods as well as production of drinking alcohol and fuel alcohol.

And yes, before City dwellers become a problem, the Apocalypse will probably kill a majority of them and those left will by means of attrition also die rapidly and be too weak and stupified to be much of a threat.

I would think being 300 miles away from major cities would be a safe distance.

Best water I have ever drank was from large mountain torrents supplying water reservoirs in N.Y.S. the dangers of waters are seen in warmer climates and excrement contaminated waters.
