Someone who goes from an indestructible young adult to a vulnerable person who survived a near death experience plus the news of being HIV positive... probably deserves some room from any corrupt intent like from a religious group.

The solace that people find in religions should be... well, I hope for an alternative in known life comes available. Obviously thoughts of the afterlife are huge when looking death in the face.

I always find it odd in so many of these cases that the person talks about how terrible their previous life way, with excessive drinking and promiscuous sex yet the only lifestyle change they highlight is a shift in sexual orientation. On a literal reading, he could still be drinking heavily and having promiscuous sex, just with women instead of men. On the other hand, it was clearly possible for him to cut down on his drinking and stop having promiscuous sex while still being romantically and sexually attracted to men.

The serious element of that is the concern that if the focus on the cause of his problems is being misinterpreted or misrepresented, his ability to maintain a better and more healthy lifestyle could be compromised. Labelling homosexuality as the problem risks masking any real causes and could create unnecessary internal conflict.
