A solution short of war must be found if at all possible. An aggressive preemptive attack on NK would be an error, IMO.
But Trump is a very unpredictable and dangerous president for any adversary to deal with.
Kim should invite a team of inspectors from the US, SK, Japan and China to start verifying denuclearization ASAP.
The US, SK and Japan should draft a time table for reducing sanctions as significant verified disarmament is accomplished.

A plan to somehow unify the peninsula under some kind of divided government would be irresistible to almost all Koreans.

 

If the NK regime nears collapse because of sanctions a massive NK attack over the DMZ should be anticipated.

Millions will be killed unless nukes are used against hardened NK artillery positions. Reality really bites.

He's not going to let anyone in and he isn't going to give up his ace in the hole. He'll take whatever he can get for as long as he can get it, and as long as he doesn't start shooting missiles off, he'll have come out ahead of the current status quo. He realizes what war on the penninsula means one helluva lot better than that grovelling fool trump.

And I agree about korean aspirations of a united korea, but then again the Koreans would also find a bag of fairy dust irresistible. The kim regime cannot survive such contact with the south. And any solution that provide that sick pukes regime with security guarantees is endorsing murder, terror, criminality, rape, slaving and theft. AFter all as Trump says, other people do "tough things" and we aren't innocent.

You give a little, I give a little. NK agrees to give up Nukes, frees some hostages and blows up some testing facilities. The US meets with Kim and calls off a joint military exercise. Mostly meaningless at this time but it is a first step. Trust is being built and hopefully stronger more meaningful steps will follow. This is the only way peace in this region can be achieved without conflict.

I do love it when the so called "peace" party has it's panties in a wad because a military exercise is being called off. This is the same party that said the same exercise last year was provocative and should not have been held. The chicken littles are out again, the sky is falling.

It's very interesting to juxtapose his stance with NK, compared to his stance with Iran. Iran is not threatening America, NK has on multiple occasions. Yet Trump gives up a bunch of concessions to little fat rocket man, but continues to take a hostile approach with Iran. It just goes to show which country our Politicians are loyal to, and it isn't America.

 

Iran doesn't yet have nukes, as far as we know, but will be dealt with. You can tell they've already lowered their tone.

Oh No, I absolutely believe they care but working on that was not part of the immediate strategy. Flattering Kim was, and I tend to believe they had a good read on him.

Once access is gained and Kim irretrievably weakened then the real changes will begin with feeding and freeing the people being at the top of the list. But there has to be a strategy for that to happen, and that strategy seems to have worked.

That is being done. It's just the means of getting there, after many decades of failure, is different.
