General opinions I've heard are that Microsoft won the PS3/Xbox 360 generation while Sony is winning the current one, all based primarily on available games and exclusives. Switch is now offering a good selection of Nintendo exclusives in addition to a plethora of indie titles and, of course, that unique form factor. Of the three consoles today, Sony and Nintendo have set themselves up pretty comfortably by those means, and Microsoft is now playing catchup. I'm sure Microsoft could turn that around at any time. There has always been a lot of jockeying around in the game console race :D

    That's a fair assessment.

I really only play PC now so I don't really have that strong of an opinion on that race anymore.

I hardly play on anything anymore. Definitely don't have strong feelings about any of it. Kind of sad how the industry has been out to "turn players into payers," though.

Most of it is harmless cosmetic stuff and the big move has been free to play games.

Subscription games are almost a thing of the past nowadays.

Some can still do it like World of Warcraft but they are truly offering an ongoing service.

Well, it sounds like they want to feed on people's innate weakness for gambling with these loot box systems, including in "AAA" games that are far from free. They are also sold in different "editions" with different features included/left out at different tiers. If you want to see what I'm talking about in detail, have a look at the Jimquisition on YouTube. I wouldn't want to buy into that kind of nonsense, where parts of a $60+ game are kept out and put behind a pay wall on day one, where the experience is grindy and boring (WoW only got away with being grindy for me until Cataclysm, when fundamental changes ruined much of the experience and made the game too boring and anti-social).

It's all very different from the gaming experience years ago, when you bought it and got everything up front, when expansions were clear-cut, and the whole thing was more focused on being fun than trying to get you to turn the "game" into a full-time job. WoW might have spurred that transformation, and even WoW is now increasingly Activisioned with its many store purchase items and paying real money for in-game currency and level boosts. It had none of that crap when it started out, none of that through Wrath of the Lich King. A level boost and game gold is not cosmetic.

I don't mind the free-to-play model as long as it is actually applied to free-to-play games! I couldn't tell you how much I put into World of Tanks. I mean, it wasn't a crazy amount, but I did buy garage slots and tried some gold ammo at some point. Given that it was and is a free game up-front, I don't mind throwing a few bucks their way to support them. Obviously they deserved something in exchange for giving me an awesome play experience, and it was a small price to pay anyway for just those things.

    I never expected PS5 in 2019.

I expect PS5 to be released in either summer or fall of 2020. Of course, I could be wrong. Maybe Sony just doesn't want to tip it's hand in any way and has a big surprise in store for consumers.

4K is the most ridiculous and overhyped nonsense tech of this current gen. One of my friends was over and I told him I just got a new 4k gaming monitor to replace my old one (he spent over $1000 on his monitor) and he was applauding me and telling me that I made the right choice and how much better games looked now. He was sitting there watching me play the entire time. I then told him after about a half an hour that it was the same monitor I bought last Christmas which was 2560:1080. He was embarrassed as ****. The only difference I can see is in text between 1080 and 1440, anything beyond that is not even noticable unless your sitting there with a magnifying glass and probably not even then.

OG Xbox had the original ghost recon live game play. Now we have Call of Duty and all these other war games that are dominating sales. I used to play GR a ton on the original xbox. Amazing how far the consoles have come.

Lock step with PCs, pretty much. These modern consoles are based on the same CPU architecture, both using AMD variants with some unique capabilities, but are generally just like pared-down x86 PCs running custom software.
