In May 2012 the web site Breitbart published a copy of a promotional booklet produced in 1991 by the literary agency Acton & Dystel showcasing their roster of writers, among whom was a young man named Barack Obama. This booklet was of particular interest because it included a brief biographical sketch which described the future President as having been born in Kenya:

Barack Obama, the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, was born in Kenya and raised in Indonesia and Hawaii. The son of an American anthropologist and a Kenyan finance minister, he attended Columbia University and worked as a financial journalist and editor for Business International Corporation. It would not be "amazingly easy" to whip up a forgery and get many, many people, including Republicans, to help you cover up the truth. Not to mention the sheer absurdity of the convoluted plot that birtherism would entail.



But at least you appear to now acknowledge that your "disappeared from the internet" argument is nonsense.

Perhaps I was not clear. Apparently Hawaii uses GREEN forms. That's why it is green. You are asking me to take your word over Hawaii's on this one. I'm going with the people who have the greatest expertise in their own clerical processes.

 

I wasn't present when Barack Hussein Obama was born. Were you?

 

It is not evidence of that if, as Daggdag has pointed out above, it was a clerical error on the part of the author of the biography.

 

Ah, yeah, I often spell K-E-N-Y-A when I meant to spell H-A-W-A-I-I. They look so much alike and sound alike that I'm sure that the publicist made a simple, understandable error.

 

My wife remembers white forms back in that period. Not asking about what they use today.

 

When they print it today, they use green apparently. What your wife recalls from back in the day doesn't matter.

 

"Clerical error." Yeah, K-E-N-Y-A looks and sounds so much like H-A-W-A-I-I.

 

He had a Kenyan father, so a mistake of that nature was certainly a possibility.

 

You mean you HOPE it doesn't matter.

 

I mean it doesn't. Facts matter. If you have facts, feel free to present them. "My wifey thinks it looks fishy" doesn't mean anything.

 

What, now you are admitting to a "possibility"? What other possibilities might exist?

 

And, then again, it might. Let's face reality here, Obama and his publicist didn't exactly make things totally clear. There will always be doubt about a situation that we won't be able to do anything about anyway.

 

His publicist made a mistake and owned it. Literally happens every day in publishing. I agree that the doubt will not go away because the doubt isn't based on reason or evidence. Beliefs that are immune to reason and evidence have pretty good sticking power.

 

I understand. It is so easy to mistake the sound and spelling of KENYA and HAWAII that anybody could have made that mistake. And, the possibility that people with money and power could have engineered an "adjustment" to an inconvenient and minor point in history in order to take over the U.S. government is tatally beyond consideration by anybody with a functioning brain, right?

Ah, what was that about the Russians colluding with the Trump campaign in an attempt to take over the U.S. government? The Left still wants it both ways.

 

I'm not sure why you think a misspelling is the only form of mistake that exists in the world. And your theory either involves Obama's parents knowing that he would be President and anticipating all of these debates so that they could plant a birth announcement, or it involves a time machine. Either way, yes, that is totally beyond any kind of rational consideration unless someone has actual evidence of either.

The Russians colluding with the Trump campaign is rational because we know for a fact that they tried and that members of the campaign pursued their attempt. We know the were contacted with exactly this kind of offer and we know they responded favorably. Even the Trump campaign has been forced to admit this because of . . . wait for it . . . EVIDENCE. If you have evidence that, say, Obama's parents plotted a fake birth certificate, and they admit this, but their only excuse was that they ended up not needing it and that they and their fellow conspirators failed at what they attempted to do so if you would be so kind as to look the other way please, then yes, the two would be comparable. Until then, no. You aren't barking up the wrong tree -- you aren't even in the right forest.
