Wrong. There are hundreds of definition and dictionary sites. Only Merriam-Webster made the mistake of using the word religion in describing the definition. I have contacted them and it will be changed.
Lets just have an honest discussion about this. You said that atheists have committed human rights violations. Yet you only mention like two atheists out of hundreds of millions. And you forget that Christians have committed these crimes too. And communism is what inspired these people not atheism. You say that atheists believe in secular humanism but failed to show how a non-belief in God means that people will become secular humanists. I myself am not a secular humanist because I have formed different conclusions about life philosophy than these humanists. You can not believe in God and come up with different conclusions about how to life life. You then claim that atheism is a religion because of some Supreme Court decision. What they ruled was that secular humanism is a religion because of the way that they meet and have beliefs. I find their decision to be absolutely ridiculous because then any political belief is a religion or any belief or club is a religion which is just ludicrous. I disagree with the Supreme Court that atheism should have all the rights and privileges of religions simply on the basis that atheists have beliefs and meet together occasionally about those beliefs.
the subject matter is the identical subject matter that religions deal with so what makes the label 'atheist' special that atheists think they can play with the same marbles as every other religion and expect everyone to believe they are not playing with the same marbles.....religion?
Atheism is the lack/absence of belief in a god//gods/deity/deities. It is literally someone who does not have any faith-based beliefs. There is nothing more to it.
Oh of course! That settles it! In order to be an atheist you need to believe there are no G/gods. Atheism is commonly understood as rejection of theism in the broadest sense of theism, i.e. the rejection of belief in God or gods.[5] The claim that the existence of any deity is unknown or unknowable is agnosticism.[6][7] lack or absence of belief in G/gods can only be claimed by people who never had the question put to them, total lack of knowledge, and agnostics. Dictionaries only quote popular usage, so you could stack up a bunch of retards that claim atheism is a sandwich and the dictionaries would put it in print.
To quote your own Wikipedia article on Atheism: "Atheism is, in the broadest sense, the absence of belief in the existence of deities." An absence of belief does not make it a belief. It makes it a lack of belief. You can't throw terms and definitions out the window because it's inconvenient for you, mate. And yes, I know what Agnosticism is. I'm a bit of both. I do not have any beliefs related to faith, but I won't deny the potential possibility of a deity or deities existing. However, going by any and all evidence we have, not to mention that only the most devout religious have an "encounter" with their god, a god does not exist as far as I am concerned.
So then its not that you lack belief, its that you disbelieve. you cant be an agnostic and atheist at the same time, that is ridiculous pop culture myth
A philosophy can also be religious, Confucianism is a religion and is a philosophy and in Atheism the philosophy is not believing in deities and the supernatural without evidence and accepting of a system of belief which is science so I argue its a religion on the simple grounds it fits a Philosophy which is a Religion enough. Add to this you have meetings, leaders, centers of thought and a promotion of this philosophy through the institutions we have public schools and the media.
The PTB run amok when they tried to peg n hole 'religion' using a single source in their efforts to control the masses, when in fact there are many.
No atheism denotes rejection of G/gods. Stalin maybe, they voted for Hitler. Everyone has a religion. Yes the highest form of conscience in their lives is the corruption we call government. If this atheist nonbelief system has so much as 2 morals in common it most certainly is a religious belief system. Lesson Transcript Instructor: Deborah Teasley Belief Systems Definition A belief system is an ideology or set of principles that helps us to interpret our everyday reality. This could be in the form of religion, political affiliation, philosophy, or spirituality, among many other things. These beliefs are shaped and influenced by a number of different factors. Belief systems are something that affect our everyday lives. They are commonly associated with religions. A religious belief system is usually structured around a moral code, [for theists] the belief of one or more deities, and the ability for supernatural occurrences to affect us and the universe that we exist in. Though [theists] religion is the most recognized form of belief system, there are others as well. A political belief system forms a person's opinion of the government, economic system, and various other social structures. These political associations would be considered a political belief system. https://study.com/academy/lesson/belief-systems-definition-types-quiz.html Now she gets into trouble in several areas so I only quoted what is usable in a context its usable since politics, philosophy, or spirituality, can circumstantially equally be a religion, even more so than the theist flavor. The problem is that it can overlap, just because its politics does not exonerate it from being a religion, hence the meaning of church and state. People today mostly are clueless to make a correct distinction due to years of propaganda, through establishing a government that is in fact a religion and forcing their religion on to the people sold as freedom that over time the teachers even lost sight of 'what is religion', hence the impetus beghind my creating a defining religion thread.
And what are these morals in common. Atheism doesn't dictate morals. Atheism is a disbelief in a God.
Murder rape theft, well sort of atheists often have no problem whimsically justifying any of those. No theist religion that I am aware of 'dictates' morals, the gubmint will though and if you break their moral codes you wind up in jail. Core moral systems are obvious for most people and they do not need to be dictated. Moral teaching only reduces the necessities of learning them the hard way. Rejection of G/gods means disbelief. Likewise theists reject disbelief in G/gods.
Don't know where you're from, but I am an atheist, and I don't condone murder, rape, or theft. No atheist I know, does.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism Enjoy. When someone doesn't believe in any sort of deity they can't see themselves as one. It's a fallacy, plain and simple.
It doesnt matter how you see yourself since you might be insane, its what you are in action and premise. I did, thanks for the laugh! You know anyone can edit wiki From your link: Agnostic atheism is a philosophical position that encompasses both atheism and agnosticism. Agnostic atheists are atheistic because they do not hold a belief in the existence of any deity and agnostic because they claim that the existence of a deity is either unknowable in principle or currently unknown in fact. The agnostic atheist may be contrasted with the agnostic theist, who believes that one or more deities exist but claims that the existence or nonexistence of such is unknown or cannot be known.[1][2][3] So with that wiki loonacy in mind I could be an agnostic-atheistic-theist because 1) I dont believe in some G/gods, 2) I do believe in other G/gods 3) I dont know about those G/gods over there. Patently over the top nutterville [IL]logic. What is the difference between atheism and agnosticism? What is the difference between someone who defines themselves as “atheist” and a professed “agnostic?” There is a key distinction. An atheist doesn’t believe in a god or divine being. The word originates with the Greek atheos, which is built from the roots a- “without” + theos “a god”. However, an agnostic neither believes nor disbelieves in a god or religious doctrine. Agnostics assert that it’s impossible for human beings to know anything about how the universe was created and if divine beings exist. Agnosticism was coined by biologist T.H. Huxley and comes from the Greek agnostos, which means “unknown or unknowable.” To complicate matters, atheists and agnostics are often confused with theists and deists. A theist is the opposite of an atheist. Theists believe in the existence of a god or gods. Are there any questions of religion or spirituality you would like us to define or explore? Let us know. http://www.dictionary.com/e/atheism-agnosticism/ Fine if you are trying to find yourself, most people do at some point in their lives, however you dont need to butcher everything in your path to do so. What you are doing is totally non-sequitur. Atheist is all out, theist is all in, agnostic neither. You cannot be out and neither at the same time. This isnt rocket science you know. What you are trying to describe is 'weak' atheist.
Today it's too hard to discern between a troll and a genuine moron. I'm still trying to figure out which one you are, if not both. But humor me, will you? What does Atheists "believe"?
It does settle it, for me. Your attempt to drag beliefs down into the muck of your faith is a tired tactic and rdlects your onabity to elevate your faith out of this muck. Thus, the only tactic left to you is to try to drag other ideas down, lest you feel inferior.
Um that there are no G/god(s) So then looks like you think its possible to be either and neither at the same time, is that it? I think you will find that most rational people will tell you that its impossible to 'legitimately' claim both at the same time.
That response is so dumb. Most atheist's believe, birds fly, garbage stinks, and you have no valid comment.
Wow! So awesome! A thread to ask atheists anything, but being polite, about their faith of atheism. nice... thanks.
Question #1: From where does the word or idea or practice, etc... of 'atheism' come from? What are its origins? Alter2Ego said: ↑ "The belief system of atheism is centered around the philosophy of "secular-humanism." So would you consider atheists, 'philosophers'? And if atheism is centered around the philosophy of "secular-humanism", #1: What exactly does 'secular-humanism' teach/adhere to/promote/ etc.... and.... #2: Who are some of its 'philosophers' by Name and date and Country of origin? 10 schools of philosophy and why you should know them https://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/10-schools-of-philosophy-and-why-you-should-know-them To an unlearned philosopher like myself, I would say that 'atheism' could be seen to be part of the Relativism philosophy. "Relativism is the idea that views are relative to perspective or considerations. This idea can even be applied to morality or truth itself, with some arguing then that there are no moral facts or absolute truths. Similarly, situational relativism is an idea in ethics where a rule is to be followed under all conditions except for some, when we would then follow another rule. For example, don’t kill unless you would save lives by doing so. This idea, in a revised form, was supported by American philosopher Robert Nozick in his book Anarchy, State, and Utopia. Most of you are probably familiar with the idea of “cultural relativism” which is the notion that the morality of two differing cultures cannot be compared and a person outside of one culture cannot critique the values and morality of another." https://bigthink.com/scotty-hendricks/10-schools-of-philosophy-and-why-you-should-know-them
Atheism is a disbelief in Gods, nothing else. 20 atheists may have 20 different philosophies or none at all. That is not what makes them an atheist. Just a disbelief in a made up story.
That doesnt drag beliefs anywhere, wth are you talking about? Theism is belief in God nothing else, and atheists call theism a religion so then it goes without saying that atheism is also a religion.
