Also, since you like history so much, the only really plausible thing that can happen to the US in short term is a slide from republic to an empire. Then the US will follow the footsteps of Roman Empire. But if that happens, all countries outside of the US, especially it’s immediate neighbors, should stock up on massive amounts of lubricants, because they are all going to be massively screwed. If the US turns into empire I can see it stretching the entire North American continent, along with half of Siberia and large swaths of Asia. Europe will become a truly vassal entity, Russia and China will be afraid to make a peep, and so on.

 

It's impossible. The US is a spica on clay feet. The United States does not have the real industry necessary to wage a large-scale war, the United States does not have the necessary modern weapons, which would be many times superior to the armaments of other countries...

Obama and Trump, by picking and choosing which laws to defend or enforce, and which international agreements to honor, are making the slide to monarchy and empire a very real possibility if the next several presidents continue with such trend. If that happens, the emperor will decide how much to spend on military, which rights and protections to grant and if the emperor has ambitions to take over another nation that emperor will have very little internal resistance and a lot of resources to use to accomplish his/her agenda.

4% of the elderly population still working should surprise no one. I find it amazing that more of the other 96% don't have to. I know about a dozen of so people over 80 who work. None of them need the money. Half of them work just to get away from their wives. Some of them say working keeps them young. I suspect though that some people did not save enough while they were young or had circumstances that drained their investment incomes. But still if 96% don't need to work it is impressive.

At any rate, working is not an evil. Hell, many people do it. I have been caught a time of two doing it myself.

 

I suspect they are working because the have to. They are on a fixed income but their property taxes, or rent keeps going up, their heating bills, etc.

I knew a log truck driver that drove into his eighties. I once asked him why he didn't retire and he said what would I do, sit on the porch and watch the lawn grow.

 

Many of us myself included keep their hands dirty while retired. I'm officially retired but I still do small logging jobs for friends and family. I only work a couple of weeks every few months. I enjoy it.
