Fox News fell for Kim's photo op

Is the world going nuts or is it just those within Trump's sphere of influence? I believe it to be the latter. With the exception of Trump and those around him, everyone else seems pretty lucid. Trump himself provides one good example. He and Kim Jong Un are good buds.

“I feel really great,” Trump told reporters a day before the disastrous Singapore summit. “We’re going to have a great discussion and I think tremendous success. We’re going to be tremendously successful, and it’s my honor, and we will have a terrific relationship.”

Then we have Fox News. Praising North Korean leader Kim Jong Un for spending time “out with the people.” Describing him as “quite the romantic.” Even lauding Kim’s uncharacteristically casual summer outfit.

That may sound like typical North Korean propaganda, but in this case, the fawning comments came from Fox News.

Here’s what happened: On Wednesday, Kim traveled with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, to a fish-pickling plant. On New Year’s Day 2018, Kim announced he would be prioritizing improving his country’s struggling economy instead of its nuclear program. Visiting the fish-pickling plant was part of that effort — with the bonus of being a great publicity stunt complete with multiple photo ops.

But what really caught people’s attention was Kim’s clothing.

Photos showed Kim wearing a breezy short-sleeve white shirt, light gray slacks, and some sort of floppy Panama/cowboy/beach hat hybrid. (Note: We asked our friends over at Racked to help us figure out what kind of hat it was. As of publication time, they are still stumped.)

That’s a whole different outfit for Kim, who usually sports austere dark-colored suits in the style popularized by former Chinese strongman Mao Zedong. (One possible explanation for the wardrobe change is that North Korea is in the middle of a dramatic heat wave, so perhaps Kim was merely trying to beat the heat.)

The hosts of Fox & Friends, the conservative news channel’s morning show that President Donald Trump watches regularly, also noticed Kim’s more relaxed outfit and fun summer outing to the fish-pickling plant.

So on Thursday, instead of explaining the context of the trip — that it’s quintessential North Korean propaganda — the show’s hosts proceeded to applaud Kim.

“The last couple of times have you seen him, it’s been out with the people,” said Brian Kilmeade, one of the hosts. “Turns out Kim Jong Un is quite the romantic,” quipped Jillian Mele, another co-anchor, referencing the fact that Kim brought his wife along on the factory tour.

Kim oversees prison camps that detain 80,000 to 130,000 people in conditions one organization said are “as terrible [as] Nazi camps.” He had his uncle and half-brother murdered, perhaps because he worried they were plotting to overthrow him. And until recently, he had no problem spending time and money on building up a nuclear arsenal instead of betting the lives of his citizens who live on about $1,700 a year.

    For Fox News hosts
[Trump] to laugh and celebrate him simply because he hung out at a factory in hipper clothes shows how just good North Korea propaganda really is — or, perhaps, just how bad Fox News can be.

No single story by a network reflects some sort of bias or naiveite in the network . We'd have to look at all the stories about NK and Kim over six months to get much of a clue. Have any stories discussed Kim's cruel policies, duplicitous nature and disastrous programs?

Of course. You can find out as much detail as you want regarding Kim's cruel regime, nearly all of it from highly respected sources.

Bias does not equate to inaccurate reporting.

How many rockets has the U.S. launched since the meet? Russia? China?

The point being, if there is no longer a need for testing, there will be no further testing.

How many Korean War MIA remains did President Obama get back from North Korea ???

If we get nothing more from North Korea it's still a big win by President Trump and he accomplished more than any of the past ten Presidents.

I must not have been clear. Alex Ward can't make any generalizations about Fox's coverage of Kim based on one story. He cannot assume that they 'fell for Propaganda' or promote his image because they do not do a hit piece every single time they say anything, or that Fox has not been doing plenty of reporting on his human rights record, because they say something cheesy about his clothing and itinerary on a specific date. I am not disputing Kim's record, I am skeptical about whether Alex did much homework about Fox's coverage of Kim when he distills it to a couple of minutes of banter which troubles him.

Are you serious? 55 remains with only 5,000 more to go from a war 67 years ago. You have got to be joking. I lost an uncle in the Korean War, and those remains mean nothing to me. Could be my uncle, probably isn't. Only one dog tag was returned.. It could take a year or more for those remains to be identified.

If you regard this as real progress with North Korea, you really have been suckered into Trump meaningless rhetoric. Kim conceded nothing. I'm guessing you voted for Trump.

I can't believe an adult would say such a thing.

I agree, but certain assumptions can be made based upon what the hosts of "Fox and Friends" said, and Ward quoted them.

Fox is responsible for the content of their programs. So, when Fox's commentators say, “The last couple of times have you seen him, it’s been out with the people. Turns out Kim Jong Un is quite the romantic,” Fox is responsible.

Do you disagree with concept? Or, do you think Fox's commentators can anything they wish, and the Fox Network is not responsible?

Keep something in mind. Look at the title. I am talking only about the reaction the hosts of "Fox and Friends" had toward Kim's photo op. The article is not about Fox's overall coverage of North Korea.

Fox has long served as a private propaganda wing for the Republicans and helped push Republicans and conservatives in general more toward the right in certain ways, and in fact really helped define what it is to be right in America today. So, naturally they were going to support Trump in his childish efforts with Kim. They'll be nice to anyone Trump is nice to, and trash anyone Trump trashes. It's a trifecta between Trump, Fox and the legions of fans of both. All doing their part.

Why does the POW/MIA flag fly atop the White House 40 years after Vietnam?

"First it was a banner of outrage, that the government had left people behind. ... We unified around this thing, we rallied around that issue... The government will never leave troops in the field again, because they know we will find out, and then we will hold their feet to the fire."

I see this differently. I think networks have a responsibility to their viewers to allow the absolute broadest discretion to those they hire as commentators. When I listen to a commentator or someone who is essentially producing the broadcast equivalent of an Editorial. I pretty much assume their employers will leave them the hell alone to make their own mistakes, tick off people by the boatfuls etc. I'd prefer we hold ourselves responsible for critically thinking about the commentary, and hold the commentators responsible for what they do in the role. We have to leave the networks alone, so they will leave the commentators alone.

As for this criticism, its a total tempest in a teapot. if the worst thing Alex Ward has to say is that these two commentators suggested Kim is a romantic because he wears western clothes or goes out among his people, without mentioning his abuses at the same time, he's got nothin worth writing about. Prove this is a pattern of these two commentators over several months and he has a short article. Prove this shallow superficial treatment extends throughout the network's coverage of Kim and Korea, and Ward has a long in depth article discussing a serious problem in Fox.
