    Anybody read this?

.... ACLU study .... illustrated the racial bias that plagues facial recognition today. "Nearly 40 percent of Rekognition’s false matches in our test were of people of color..."
    wired.com

Security systems can better surveil white people as compared to colored people.
    Isn't this racism?
I can't imagine "people of color" seeing this as a problem.

As to facial recognition software cameras and surveillance of American citizens? I have a serious Fkn problem with that. Last thing we need is to give more control to idiotic, power mad police Depts whether they are local, state or federal...

And police administrations are pushing for this crap. Here in Orlando they are testing the software on police only and may go to city council and ask for more funding for testing but then double talk when asked about it and say they are just testing and there's no plans to implement on citizens.

Which is complete bull crap, because why test something this expensive if you didn't want to implement it later?? Our chief of police is a complete tool and idiot if he thinks this is gonna happen.

    It's a slippery slope.

First it was requiring cops to wear body cams and next it would be facial recognition cams.

They are already using facial recognition cameras and have for five years in Missouri especially at the state police level. Hell, I own one.

It's just Occam's Razor at work - simply put these systems are most likely built by high tech guys 'n' gals (mostly guys) and they test them on themselves.
But when "colored" people can slip past a facial recognition system, but the whites get hassled - isn't that racism?
We need to see African Americans start protesting that they are being ignored by law enforcement.

And this goes some way in explaining why people of color are statistically more likely to mistakenly confused for another suspect and wrongly arrested.

Even if it's a computer doing the recognition, the statistical mixups are still there.

Excellent point. You best recognize people of your own race.
To be as good as another race in identifying their features (ie Chinese) you have to live with them for a long time.
That goes for blacks identifying whites, Mongolians identifying Aborigines etc..

I want the original study because the article on this topic was biased. Other articles explained that aside from people of color, some Congress members were confused with actual mugshots.

With the tech so far, I can't imagine a defendant not being able to successfully defend themselves against it. Just too many variables like AI skin tone mix-up, look alikes, gender confusion, unintentional bias, etc.

My house has facial recognition and number plate scanning.

Doorbell has different chimes for different people. No black people programmed in however.
Asians all the look the same too. I wonder if it can do them.

I wonder how much is due to a major identifying factor in whites-hair color-not being one in other races.

More likely the optical sensor has trouble distinguishing identifying markers when the target reflect less light, as in the darker the skin the less reflection and more absorbtion of the signal. This will be fixed in time as the tech evolves.

Actually, it's the other way around. Black people are getting more false matches, meaning that they are being flagged as criminals more often than white people.

I support it, yes blacks in pictures are sometimes harder to make out in dark areas for the obvious reasons, but as technology improves it will overcome this

If we improve the ability to better define dark skin then The Usual Suspects
will trot out the same ol', same ol' that we are targeting people of color.
