http://thehill.com/blogs/pundits-bl...-budget-cuts-social-security-plain-and-simple For decades SS has been revenue positive - interest was more than the program paid out. The Gov't could not resist and started stealing that interest and putting it into general revenue rather than let this money accumulate in the fund. The Gov't has always claimed that it would pay back this money. Now we are in a situation (just in recent years) where the interest no longer is enough to meet with the program's obligations. And the Gov't does not want to pay back the money it owes. Instead Trump wants to fund war and give tax cuts to corporations which will force the middle class to pick up the tab.
^from the article. #1 & #3 sound reasonable, and #2 doesn't make me hysterical either honestly. We are hugely in debt and spending is out of control. Something has to be done, period. Maybe going back to more of a pre-1984 screening process would help.
What part of "SS" is paid for by payroll taxes and interest on the money collected- did you not understand ? What part of - The Gov't has been stealing from the program for decades by putting the interest on money collected into general revenue - did you not understand ?
As it stands now SS is to run out of funds to maintain the current payout by 2034 and recipients may see a 23% cut in benefits.
Did you intend to quote me here? Because your post has nothing to do with my post, so I'm assuming you quoted me accidentally?
There was nothing irrational about my post. The only one being irrational here, is you. What is so hysteria inducing about: Imposing punitive work requirements Cutting benefits by $10 billion Offsetting overlapping unemployment & disability benefits The program particularly began to mushroom after they loosened the screening processes in (1984? 1985?) Maybe it is past time to review the screening processes, too.
And perhaps it might not have been a problem if the government hadn't relax the screening processes in the mid-80s either. We can't go back in time and change anything. All Trump or anyone can do now is try to improve things moving forward.
The Gov't made a promise. The people were forced to contribute to SS on the basis that they would be able to have money for retirement. The Gov't stole money from the program on the basis that it would repay that money. You can support Gov't theft from "we the people" all you like. I say this is irrational.
They function entirely differently though. One is age based, one is "disability" based (and notoriously abused, fwiw.)
Regardless - SSDI is part of SS. Part of Social Security payments is paying for insurance should one become disabled. Since people paid for that insurance ... and the Gov't stole the money that was supposed to be there to pay those insurance claims on the basis that it would honor those claims .. those claims should be honored.

Yes, there are scammers, but there is considerable effort spent to root them out. Sadly, people who have serious disabilities can spend years attempting to get some benefits, spending a lot of money and have a very good chance of being denied. More than a few of the people I know of or helped even died before during their claim was ever handled. Becoming a politician or preacher or Right Wing fund raiser goes much easier and much better pay!
