It is a small start. Let's see if it actually happens.

you mean to pre-Obama levels or pre-Bush levels, how much a cut exactly?

I am all for cutting Military spending to pre-Bush era spending, end these two 10+ year Bush wars

if one looks, the debt started growing when the two 10+ year wars started

Bush hid the cost of the war from the people...

He and Bush sort of did/do. They stay on their own properties for vacation. Obama never did that. They made sure to vacation around the world as much as possible. The Trumps have seen and already done it all.

Generally we all know govt spending is completely bloated. I'd start by slashing everyone's pension above a certain level. The fact many of the pensions are worth the same as their salaries when they were working, is ABSURD!!!! Considering many can go speak, can write books, get put on boards, they're still making money past retirement, plus pensions and 401k. And they're arguing about the care for veterans with a straight face who worked a **** load harder than any of them, hehe.

I would love to see an accounting of what his and his families travel and secret service coverage have cost taxpayers since he took office.

I would agree, my friend. That's why Trump's leaving it to the experts and not himself.

Would you agree that the 5% cut should also be applied to the military budget?

Just out of curiosity, if we assume that every cabinet secretary actually does cut 5% from their budget(and actually spends 5% less), what would the total decrease in spending amount to ?

(Remember that the top 3 items in the budget are: Medicare/Social Security, Defense, and Debt Service )

I agree with the 5%, lets start there and shave off more if needed.

I'm not an expert, let the military and government staffs make the recommendations and then just do it.

Well after a tax cut its the only way to start getting your deficit down.

What they should have done was leave the tax rates, do the cuts (as the economy is peaking) so that you can get the revenue and apply it to the deficit and debt, and once you have the deficit down and the debt going down, sit and wait until the next correction comes (and it will) and Then cut taxes so that you line it up right around when people need the extra money.

I mean, Mitch McConnell mentioned cuts to entitlements, which was a bad idea this close to the midterm. I am a little suspicious that he was trying to sabotage his own party like that.

But, now we have Trump saying to cut bureaucratic spending, and he is getting criticized by the left. Party First! Right?

I am all for a 5% cut in military spending as long as it is not a cut in benefits for our vets or supplies for those overseas

The departments that manage "entitlements" are facing a 5% cut.
How about the military? Any reason that should not face the some cuts as everyone else?

Why? The United States as a country lends Secret Service details to all current and former Presidents as well as other benefits. Are you curious as to how much Bill Clinton is costing you? A lot, despite the fact that he has made over $111 million he still gets a ton of money from the government.

The price tag for Clinton’s federal retirement allowance from 2001 through the end of this year will run $8 million, compared to $5.5 million for George H. W. Bush’s and $4 million for Jimmy Carter’s during the same period.
Since 2001, Clinton has received more of almost every benefit available to former presidents — from his pension to his staff’s salaries and benefits to supplies. His $420,000 phone bill and $3.2 million office rent tab both nearly surpassed the totals rung up for those purposes by Bush, Carter and the late former presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan combined. As a group, they spent $484,000 on telephone service and $3.8 million on rent in the same span.
The figures come from congressional reports studying the presidential retirement program and from summaries of annual budget requests by the U.S. General Services Administration, which administers the program, created to allow former presidents to enjoy dignified retirements without having to take jobs that demean or commercialize the presidency.

Agreed. Military spending is such a black hole but it pales in comparison to "entitlements" like Social Security, Medicare, etc....

To be honest, cutting spending has to be done but nobody really wants to do it because it means cuts in entitlements and this will kill a political career faster than a fat lady through a cake.

The government really needs to get in the black and out of the red. If it could get positive cash flow and rid itself of the debt, then the government would actually be making money on interest and that money could be used to fund projects, etc. The problem is, our politician are just not interested in this. They don't care. It's always easier to spend someone else's money and keep yours safe. Politicians get free healthcare and secure retirement pensions, they are virtually unaffected by their decisions ans this is a problem.

Eventually we will run out of money to borrow if we don't get this under control.

If we cut federal spending by 5% the defecit will shrink dramatically

Particularly if we implement baseline budgeting

If so the Penny Plan would balance the budget in about 5 years by cutting just 1% per year

    Cut everything

But the cut should be 1% per year

So, cutting a department by such a nominal amount, now all of the sudden means cutting the checks to seniors? Explain why?
