House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., offered an olive branch to President Trump and congressional Republicans, just hours after Democrats took back control of the House of Representatives.

The congressional leader said that the new Democratic House majority will seek bipartisanship with Republicans, a comment that echoed what Trump himself had conveyed in his own postelection press conference.

"We believe that we have a responsibility to seek common ground where we can," Pelosi said Wednesday afternoon. "Openness and transparency, accountability [and] bipartisanship [are] a very important part of how we will go forward."

    Maybe there is hope....

I think extreme partisanship is tearing the country apart. Compromise and negotiation is not weakness.

    Thoughts?

Depends on what things they find to have common ground.

She needs to win the speakership first, then get with dumb assets like Nadler, and bring him up to speed with this new found work together agenda of hers...

Alas the violent, TDS-infested "RESIST", "NOT MY PRESIDENT", "IMPEACH" leftist mob which is the base of the Dem party will prevent any attempt of compromise and common ground and Pelosi knows that better than anyone else.

In all likelihood she is just playing "a good cop" for PR purposes while her attack dogs are gearing up for more investigations, fishing expeditions, witch hunts...

I wouldn't trust her. Trump tried to work with them on DACA and they kicked him right in the teeth, ran out to the first CNN reporter her and Chucky could find and told them they got everything they wanted from Trump and no wall. So they were successful in making Trump look bad. Can't stand people like that.

This needs to come to fruition and not be empty rhetoric. This tribalism will not stop till some party leaders get together and attempt to pass legislation. Congress needs to demonstrate that it can actually legislate rather than worry about re-election bids and party power.

This lame duck session is going to be the demise of Pelosi, and lots and lots of her "lifetime" congressional colleagues. The "managed decline" of Obamacare will be awesome to watch  But up 1st ... Fed FY 2019 budget. ::): "Minibus" gov't spending appropriations runs out Dec. 7th ... on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor BTW ... Shutdown for Christmas Nancy?

They certainly do, but given the long history of division, and hate out of the DNC, I won't hold my breath.

If the democrats, and Pelosi, show some class here, and focus on ignoring POTUS and working on solutions to the country's problems, they will win in 2020 and beyond.

They impeach trump and they lose.

This is the only way forward. However, it means both sides must be brave enough to work together. To not compromise and not work together is the coward's way out.

Surely you're not suggesting the RNC is not guilty of the very same thing?

I have to agree that the House and Senate need to step up and reassert control of the government. They need to work together for the nation, and that means some compromises must be made. I completely and utterly despise Trump, but all this focus on him and on impeachment is not at all helpful.

    I agree.

It also may mean drowning out the voices of the extremists, because although they are the loudest, they're not the majority.

Time after time we hear about elections hinging on the independents (who are also typically the moderates.) We don't generally hear of elections hinging on the lunatic fringes. I wish our politicians would remember that.

On one hand, it would be good for the country.

On the other, the picture of someone holding a bloody baseball bat while talking about the need to get along makes it a bit difficult to believe.

    Fair enough.

But baby steps toward moving forward are still encouraging.

While I believe that (at least) part of their voters were issuing a mandate on Trump, they would be well advised to focus on the business of problem solving. I hope they weren't empty words...

It would be nice but in my experience democrats dont seek common ground-they seek power.

    They vote lockstep.

This would mean not doing so-and I am not optimistic about them do as much.

I think that Pelosi has a fight on her hands for the speaker seat. If she wins the speaker seat she has a fight to keep her party together. The fight has just begun in the Democratic party. There is the #resist idiots she has to deal with.

She is pardoning for speaker ship. Which I don't think she is going to get. After the last 2 years, and the general history of the democrat party, now they want to compromise and deal...... no

We seem to always try to be the adults in the room yet it never pays a dividend. Compromise is fine where reasonable but if Nancy tries to pull a Clinton move here, she will be out. The voters want their pound of flesh, give it to them.

Who is "we"? I respected Clinton for his ability to work across the aisle. Politics doesn't have to be a winner-takes-all blood sport. Hyper-partisanship is a cancer.

Unfortunately common ground for Nacy is what she thinks.
