As an Aussie I am watching this disaster unfold in America and I am gobsmacked that anyone would even THINK about requiring people to work without pay. I am reassured though that this seems to be illegal

Hey, just because you know more about what's going on here than the average American doesn't mean you should come here and brag about it.

    Thanks for the link. Interesting.

Not too sure what we would do to ANY pollie who suggested that we work for free. Staking them out in the Tanami desert might be a good start :p

Nancy needs to compromise like Trump has offered to do. Then we'd have a deal.

The Pelosi shutdown is hurting families.

Every member of Congress still gets their paycheck during this shutdown.

    Every single one

Will they? There is no assurance of that. And WHEN will they be paid?

They are not going without pay, they will get paid. They will just not get it on the usual date.

A judge has denied the restraining order on that lawsuit and has consolidated the Federal unions lawsuits.

And with the 16th amendment, slavery was reinstituted.

BTW, none of the employees who are being requested to come back to work will be hung for staying home. If you are going to compare this to slavery, then my previous statement about the 16th amendment stands too.

It is assured anyone who works will get back pay. The only ones who may not are those who havent been working. If the federal workers didnt want this possibility they didnt have to take the job or they can quit. When they started it was explained to them what their status would be in a shutdown and that it's illegal for them to strike.

And will their landlords, banks, grocery stores, insurance brokers wait for payments?

All public unions should be abolished for the good of the country. See sig.

Moreover if they don't like the special conditions on working for government, including their outsized, mostly unearned pay and ridiculous pensions that the private sector doesn't get, just pays for, they can quit. No one is forcing them to work.

Youd be surprised at how much banks and everyone would work with feds during a shutdown.

Do YOU accept employment on that basis.....that "someday you will be paid so live for free,( don't eat, don't pay for the gas to drive to work, don't pay your heating bills, or insurance , etc.) until then"???

In fact, after posting that comment, I went searching. And it seems that communities across the country are coming together to help. Utility companies and credit unions are providing extensions and relief and soup kitchens/open pantries are providing food for those in need. Good on them!

I think the reason for the need is despicable, but it is heartening to see people coming together to help others in need. That's what is should be all about...

Given the right job. I plan ahead enough that I don't live from pay check to pay check.
Most business men take the long view. The government shutdown will end and they are likely to lose customers forever if they refuse credit.

Well good for you. But that doesn't mean we should ignore those who can't (and they are a considerable number). Do you think they should be punished when, through NO FAULT of their own they should starve and lose their homes?

HOW would that help the American economy?

Have you enough money for the rest of your life? Why not? That would be viewed by some as irresponsible..

I'm not surprised that your first concern is for business( WOMEN do business, too, BTW)

Business depends on customers and if everyone is broke they won't have many customers.

Can you address the post of mine you quoted?

The 13th forbids slavery....being fourloughed or having a delay in pay isn't slavery.

They're not required to work without pay. They can of course quit. No constitutional issue. Stay in your lane

Planning ahead is hard to do when living on a basic wage
