There is talk of compelling them to work - which while they are working for no pay they cannot get a temporary job to make the money stretch

They could quit. But people would be anxious to quit their private sector jobs for a federal job because it is so much more secure. The money is on the way, it's only delayed.

Or they could strike. But they must consider that all the air controllers were fired en masse for striking in the 80's. And people would again be looking to take their jobs. It would be no problem filling the jobs, nobody is irreplaceable.

But they are free, free to leave their jobs.

I tend to disagree because of what some people call a necessity. Been there. Done that. .

Well it depends on the job. Public v private. I mean I guess folks can sue the Govt, but unfortunately the Govt has immunity. That’s sort of the problem with giving Govt so much power.

In this case the Govt isn’t withholding pay..they just don’t have the funds

Thank gods and little fishes that I am not flying anywhere near America at the moment - you have air traffic controllers under financial stress being required to work

    Recipe for disaster

Necessities do not include TV, internet, prepared food, sodas, cigarettes, mj, alcohol, anything but basic transportation, no car if at all if possible, big houses. In fact, you can eat healthier by not buying any prepared food. Most people could at least put aside 10%, if they put it aside before they get their hands on it. After a year 10% will be enough to live without a paycheck for at least a month.

Except unprepared food is expensive on time. If you are a single mother - yeah that works - not

People are sharing “photos of a furloughed life”

You ignored all the other expensive items which some people consider necessities these days. However even for that single mother, she should be able work in a meal or two.
However, take a look at that empty house. It is a pretty nice house. I lived in a lot worse over the years.

One other source of immense savings are thrift stores. You can dress nicely and furnish your house at about great savings.

    And where is this talk?
I'm pretty sure you're not hearing loose talk while you're sitting down under
