To make matters even "worse" some of the white students had American flag clothes on. The horror! Apparently this black coach of a mostly black team thinks our flag and our president are offensive and political statements have no place in this venue. This coming from the same coach who keeps his players in the locker room during the national anthem.

I guess in this guys mind the American flag and Trump's name are somehow implying racism and meant to make his black team uncomfortable.

"Michael Walker posted on Facebook a photograph of fans on the Jordan side of the gym with the flag draped over the legs of four front-row spectators.

"The message read: Trump 2020 Keep America Great!"

"Several other young fans sitting nearby were wearing clothing patterned after the American flag."

“I coach a predominantly black inner city high school team,” Walker wrote on his Facebook posting. “We go out to a rural area in Jordan, MN and this is there. Please explain how and why this is appropriate at a high school basketball game?”

Walker included a slew of hashtag phrases, among them #critical questioning, #blackandproud and #blackmenmatter. Walker, who is black, also is the director of his district’s Office of Black Male Student Achievement."

"the Roosevelt team remained in the locker room during the playing of the national anthem before tipoff."
Joining the Roosevelt coach in concern about the flag’s presence during the game is Crystal Flint, who coached the Minneapolis North girls team from 2005 until early 2018."

"Flint said she wants to know whether the flag was displayed because Roosevelt’s team is mostly black or has it been brought to previous Jordan home games."

they should keep politics out of sports. If the slogan wasn't displayed that might be a different thing but that was a political statement made in the prior presidential election so it has no place in sports. Nor does any flag making a political statement for that matter.

So you are equally as offended by the black coach keeping his players in the locker room during the national anthem?

No, not if he is discussing items related to the game such as strategy, etc. I would say that I think they should eliminate the playing of the national anthem at all sporting events; their is no reason to play it since it accomplishes nothing to the game. we all know we are Americans and don't need to be reminded of it at every sporting event unless people are unsure of their citizenship and need to be reminded. by doing this it will eliminate issues that crop up regarding the playing of the national anthem at sporting events.

I think I would disagree, the playing of the anthem shows that this is a community building event. Sports should be used as a method of bonding players, teams, and the community together in a shared experience. It also if good to reinforce a national identity through shows of patriotic symbolism. As a nation we have to keep a certain amount of positive messaging for the country in case of national emergencies. I guess what I am saying is Patriotic displays are not a bad thing and in fact may be critical in hard times for the country.

Why would a group of high schoolers, likely not old enough to vote, have a Trump flag at a basketball game? Seems a little out of place to me - unless it was strategic.

Keeping players in the locker room during the anthem is an obvious political statement by a coach who then derides and chastises the opposing team for doing the same.

Do you ask this same question when high school students protest Trump or those that in the same game stayed in the locker room during the anthem?

This is a simple story of a black coach with a chip on his shoulder who hates America and will for as long as it is majority white

    Good question

Under-performing blacks will be competing with shoeless hispanics for more of the white man’s money through welfare

    And they may occasionslly disagree

Actually, I would think that a high school basketball game would not be an appropriate place for a Trump protest either. As for the locker room stance for the anthem, I would wonder how many of the kids were truly in lockstep with the intended movement or just doing it as a stunt or to emulate their favorite athletes.

High school sporting events are no place for politics. On either side.

I think that there is nothing wrong with patriotic music/symbols and they are fine for certain events such as parades, state and national holidays and other related events, however I don't think it should be forced down the throats of those who don't feel the need to observe them nor support them. Positive messaging can turn negative rather quickly if the person on the receiving end feels no need to hear/receive what other think they should hear/receive. Just my opinion.

Was this taken at a high school sporting event? More likely, it was a photo taken by parents of their lawn sign.

That may be your interpretation, but unless you are the person making the decision, you cannot know for sure.

it's really a very sad day when someone cannot have a differing opinion from others and be condemned for it.
