The rulings of the court - the holdings - are law. Statements of fact.
The opinions of the court are separate form the holding.

I am certain that there are many politicians as well as Jurists who would argue that point with you (hold a differeing opinion than you). Admittedly, the Constitution and the Amendments are "law", however, like any other law, they are the opinions of those people who wrote them and labeled them as Law.

Not just opinions, they are useful for defining case law, etc.

See, for most of US history, the 2nd was understood to mean what it said.

Its only recently, with the lefts desire to disarm free citizens and deny them their rights-that things have changed.

Excellent post. The states really have done a poor job of protecting the 2nd, its generally democrats seeking to curtail rights.

With the makeup of SCOTUS changing, I expect to see some major shifts in 2nd amendment law.

Well there are certain caveats on many rights. Ones speech creating a clear and present danger for example.

But what was understood by reasonable people at the time regarding the 2nd was it would not apply to the insane, for example.

 

No Insanity exclusion is written into the second amendment. The insane have gun rights too.

You are corrrect. I'd argue if citizens are reduced to relying on the legal opinions of 9 individuals, our rights are already in danger.

Although Im not advocating for it, widespread failure to comply with restrictions on our rights is an almost certain end result.

Marijuana didn't become decriminalized, and then legal because people stopped using it.

There are several examples of citizens refusing to comply with registration, magazine laws etc.
