BY SCUTTLING THE AMAZON DEAL, ALEXANDRIA OCASIO-CORTEZ JUST OPENED HERSELF UP TO A PRIMARY CHALLENGE:

This afternoon, a spokesperson for Ocasio-Cortez said she would not be taking any interviews. One can see why. But the real question is whether this could hurt her politically. In fact, there is good reason to believe that this debacle has opened the door to a potential primary challenge. Given that almost the entire New York Democratic Party machine, from Mayor Bill de Blasio to Governor Andrew Cuomo were desperate for the Amazon deal; a challenge to AOC might well attract some serious backers.

And the polls back it up. According to a recent Sienna College poll, a majority of New Yorkers supported the deal, an even bigger majority in Queens, the very borough where the HQ would have been located. Moreover, 70 percent of black New Yorkers and 81 percent of Hispanic New Yorkers wanted Amazon in Gotham. Both demographic groups suffer from higher unemployment than the rest of the city. As Daily News Columnist Rob George put it in Twitter, it was “AOC vs. POC.”​

With Amazon NYC 'second HQ' deal canceled, Ocasio-Cortez now officially is a huge problem for Dems

Having demonstrated her ability to confound the schemes linking the party to the tech oligarchs — and her profound ignorance of the basics of fiscal reality — the party bosses now realize they must be rid of her.

 

No, they will squeeze every ounce of use they can out of her. Only then will they be ready to be rid of her.

 

Wise move on Amazon's part. Quite an accomplishment for AOC after only a month in office.

 

She's the gift that keeps on giving. The more people see of the new House crazies, the better Trump looks.

 

Trust me: they desperately want to be rid of her, but, due to her media presence and popularity with the young and ignorant, cannot visibly stick the shiv in her back. So Nancy Pelosi's ability to "cut your head off and you won't even know you're bleeding" (as her own daughter put it) will come in handy.

The Amazon tax breaks, calculated to be worth $3 billion over a period of many years, were going to bring 25,000 high-paying jobs to Ocasio-Cortez's district in Queens and generate many times that sum in increased tax receipts, according to Cuomo and de Blasio, who exulted over the deal. But offering any kind of benefit to a big corporation founded and headed by the richest man in the world is anathema to the radical left.

Ocasio-Cortez may not fully realize that her political party is now the party of big business, trading government favors of all sorts for massive political donations (and censorship of conservatives on internet forums controlled by the tech giants).


She has destroyed a key plan of the elders to revive a blue city and state that are hemorrhaging jobs, tax revenue, and middle-class residents. Even worse, she has sent a message to the tech plutocrats who are the new powers behind the scenes of the progressive left that any deals made with them cannot be guaranteed to come to fruition. This is a mortal threat to the cozy working relationships cultivated by wheeler-dealers like Pelosi and Schumer with their tech and financial mogul buddies.

Yesterday, in exulting over her victory, Sandy O revealed that she has no understanding at all about government finance, telling a reporter:

The city was paying for those jobs, so frankly, if we were willing to give Amazon three — if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves if we wanted to. We could hire out more teachers, we can fix our subways, we can put a lot of people to work for that money if we wanted to.​

Cortez apparently thinks there was three billion dollars in a bank that was given to Amazon, so it is available to be used elsewhere on all the goodies she mentions. But, the three billion was merely a rebate on taxes that otherwise would have been paid by Amazon over a period of years. With no deal, there will be no such tax payments. Not the three billion, nor any of the taxes above that amount that Amazon would have been paying.

The spectacle of someone this ignorant having a vote in Congress on the laws governing taxation would be hilarious if it were not so frightening. Amazon clearly realizes that there is no upside in dealing with any governmental unit under the sway of Cortez and her supporters. The other tech giants watched and learned. That is why Pelosi, Cuomo, de Blasio and the other ruling-class stooges in the Democrat Party must be rid of her.

She will never even see it coming.

 

All those workers are going to be dead in 11 years, anyway. What the hell do they need jobs for...

 

OK, then, maybe the best location for a second Amazon HQ is in a city that is not expensive by comparison. So, again, ATLANTA, and especially the far southern portion of that city (close to the very large Hartsfield airport), come quickly to mind! Amazon would have the East Coast location it needs to give coast-to-coast span of control, and close proximity to one of the world's major transportation hubs.

Hey, Jeff -- put the HQ where you will be welcomed -- not where people curse at you and speak about you as though you're the lowest form of filth among mankind. You're the best in the world at what you do, and you don't need that kind of crap!

 

Maybe we need them for House members.

Yea I am still upset about that. I am not a big fan of bribing massive multi-national corporations to come into your state. As an engineer, what infuriates me about the Wisconsin deal with FoxConn is that the engineering profession already has full employment here. FoxConn is not going to push up engineering salaries, they are going to import a ton of Chinese engineers (it was reported on in the Wall Street Journal) who obviously will be paid below market value and will result in overall lower engineering salaries in my area. I am not a big fan of constant population growth and Wisconsin had done a great job of avoiding it, that trend looks to be ending with this abomination.

 

We don't have a problem with her. We love her. We’ll exploit her radicalism, make fun of her and publicize her every idea and repeat her every speech!!! Go go go

 

Indeed. Amazon will do well by bringing tens of thousands of well paying jobs into the red state. You’ll be happy with that, right?

Move to Tahiti, my friend. Tahitians need nothing, their unemployment is at over 50%, they just do not need to work. They have fish and bread trees... so what if their houses have no doors and no windows.. they’re happy with just sun and nice breeze and lying under the palm tree!

 

Jobs are overrated.

The New Yorkers who lost them are better off in the streets. Living in a cardboard box leaves a smaller carbon footprint than a house or apartment.

 

You really really don't want that. Massive multinationals moving into Red states is a proven method of turning them Blue. It happened over most of the Western coast and is happening in Texas and Colorado.

 

Interesting idea. I’ll look into it but I think there no direct correlation in that.

Besides, 25,000 new jobs in a red state... I like the sound of it.

 

Like whatsherface said... take $3bln in subsidies being offered to Amazon and use them to increase salaries to workers and peasants all around... the end effect be better than from Amazon moving in and grabbing these $3bln from the State coffers.

Makes lots of economic sense.

 

25,000 good paying jobs in a Borough with a population of 2.4 million would push property values out of sight. Even the dimmest light bulb won't buy that. News flash, the average home there now costs $646,300. The place is full of people making good money.
