There is a tank school in my small Siberian town. Of course black guys from Africa study there. Who else could study in Siberia? Negroes can only. Though... It seems they are not negroes already. If you live in Siberia you are becoming a Russian. There is a Russian custom. In the Baptism of the Lord (19 January) we swim in a ice hole. That way we make from respectable negroes wild Russians...

Painting in Omsk always had a very high level. Omsk artists are the elite of the Russian paint. On of them is Mikhail Vrubel. He was born in 1856. Firstly he worked as a icon painter. For example he restored frescoes that church.
    [IMG] [IMG]

But he did his artworks in other style too. It's the Queen Swan. She is a mystical Russian character.
I'm sure you won't be surprised if you know the model was his wife. :)

It's other mistical character the God Pan.

And... and... and if you are a mystic then you always address to the Devil. It's the Vrubel's Demon.

Theme of the Demon was haunting Vrubel. It's the Flying Demon.

But if you're dealing with the devil then you will be punished. When Vrubel painted the Prostrated Demon he went crazy.
You see the Demon is prostrated but he is looking at you...

And this is the last artwork of crazy Vrubel...

I'd like to write a few words about the Russian mentality. As it was mentioned before, the Russian mentality doesn't depend of the nation of a Russian. This's a strange phrase, isn't it? :) It depends of where the Russian was born. For example people from Saint Petersburg are very educated and they have good sense of humor. People from Moscow have no a sense of humor. They have money instead. Money they seize from Siberians. Therefore Siberians have a sense of humor only. Of course, Siberians don't like people from Moscow. But Siberians are very noble and highly spiritual people. They know that disliking Moscow people is a bad thing. Thus they relocate to Moscow, became Moscovites, getting money and stopping to dislike of Moscovites. :)

I believe that the mentality of a person is described good by the person's humour. Below I try to translate some Siberian jokes and anecdotes. Though it's a really difficult to do. Russian is a very complication thing for translation.

@st256 Did you see "The Way Back" about escaping a gulag?
    And below

Your map of Russia with Siberia in yellow #48
looks like the 'stans are included in Siberia.

BTW I lived in Milwaukee 2 years.
The second winter got into my hands as
my joints were red, swollen and stiff
    although I was over dressed.
Bit gloves and a Soviet army jacket.
I accepted I was not built for the cold
and moved back to Orange County, California.

They are beautiful at that age,
but get old, and older fast!
I am just stating how I see it.

I remember a documentary on old RT
about skiing in Russia. But, it was the
locals, coming out in cloths more appropriate
    for a hot summer day.
    And the females were babes.

Lady, never watch propaganda. We consider this film as a comedy with fantasy elements. I write it because I live on the land where GULAG was. If you want I could explain my skepticism in detail. But the main thing you should know, foreigners couldn't escape from a GULAG camp. There is no any possibility for an untrained person to pass thousands miles in the snow taiga. Especially if temperature is less -40F.

If to be honest, I can't understand your fixing on the GULAG. The USA have your own GULAG. It's the Roosevelt's labour camps. Because you have no correct information about Russia posts of Americans look very funny for Russians. I often read them to my students :) Firstly, I tried to argue when read American nonsense about Russia. Then it became clear that it's useless. You have no true information, your brain is washed. I just publish photos from my hometown. If you want to say something bad about us, do it in other topics please.

    @st256 Thank You

Anything you want to know about a place,
    you can learn from movies.

It is my "faith" don't argue ;)
Isn't "The Way Back" a true story?
Then there is "Dr. Zhivago" are you anywhere near ? Yuriatkin ?
And "Reds". More recently "The Day Stalin Died".

I lived in Hollywood when this happened.
The old Russian, Jewish Hollywood studio owners
hosted a dinner broadcast live. It was a riot. Good natured.

Besides corn, Khrushchev admired the concept of a
cafeteria, especially for workers, and took it back to the USSR.

My mother's parents came to :flagus: from Kiev, Russia 1905.
The Czar invited them to leave. Who is going to say "no"?
My father came over on his own, 1935 hopping from Russia
to Germany to France where distant family advised him to immigrate.
His family was from Odessa and Petrograd. Not heard of since
    the Great Patriotic War ;)

As I wrote before Russians differentiate mentality by the region of living. For example we believe that Moscovites are inclined to financial affairs. People from Urals are persistent and courageous. But most cool guys according the Russian vision live in Siberia. There are standard idioms like a Siberian Character or Siberian Health. Of course it's a kind of generalization but some basis for it exists.

I would like to tell you about General Karbyshev. To be precise, Karbyshev was a Lieutenant General. He was born in 1880 in Omsk.
When the Second world war had began, he was an elderly scientist, military engineer, Lieutenant General. His specialty was the construction of fortifications.
At the beginning of the war, he was surrounded and had to break through to Soviet forces. But he was contused and was captured by Germans without consciousness. To be captured in other condition is a shame for Russians. Two years Germans were trying make him work for them. But the old General said "No". Germans wrote:
This largest Soviet fortifier, a staff officer of the old Russian army, a man who has passed for sixty years, was fanatically committed to the idea of loyalty to military duty and patriotism... Karbyshev can be considered hopeless in the sense of using him as a specialist in military engineering". And the verdict of the Nazis in 1943, after two years of persuasion was: "sending to the concentration camp Flossenburg on hard labor without discounts on rank and age"
He passed many concentration camps and appeared in Mauthausen at the end. Everywhere he organized resistance to Germans. One winter day Germans pull him on a frost and started to pour cold water on him. Of course he died.
Now the Omsk airport is named after Karbyshev

During my life I traveled a lot. So I have some opinion about seasons in different countries. For example, the best summer you could spend in Italy. The best autumn is in Korea. And the best spring is in Siberia. In spring, a temperature grows very quickly. Omsk has over 223 solar days in a year. Sometimes their number is over 300. Omsk is one of the most solar cities in Russia. I remember one time I flied from Omsk (at the end of April) to Italy. Because the temperature in Omsk was over +20C(+68F) I'd dressed lightly. But temperatures in Italy was +4C(+40F) only. It was a case, when Siberian was frozen in Italy :)
What is it interesting in the Siberian spring? All everything blooms and smells. When I spend a spring in other countries, I can smell very rarely of the spring bloom. All people know a sakura bloom. It looks beautiful but doesn't smell. Fir forests in Tatras do not smell too, etc.

But Siberian forests smell very good, especially in spring. All begins from apple trees. A city becomes white. Could you imagine an aroma? :)

Siberian spring looks lovely, but any spring would be fabulous after those hard winters.

Oh, yes, that's right. All of us wait spring. And I believe, that best spring is in Siberia :)
After apple trees lilac blooms in Omsk. If it'll be possible I'll post photos of my university during lilac blooming. Unfortunately, I can't post its fragrance :)

The important part of the Russian cousine is mushrooms... Don't think about Holland. We and they eat different mushrooms.
When I visited the USA I was surprised that Americans don't collect the mushrooms at forrest. But it's a very popular outdoor pastime in Russia. Imagine, you go to Omsk's taiga...
    look for something like this...
and find nothing. Because mushrooms grow in a birch forest in Siberia.
There you can find something like this
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
We can eat mushrooms as a starter with vodka.
    As a soup...
    As a main dish.
    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]
The mushroom collecting is a part of the Russian mentality.

As I wrote before, mushroom collecting is a part of Russian mentality like bullfighting in Spain. I strongly do not recommend doing that Americans.
But any Russian children reads in Russian fairy tales about this poisonous mushroom
    [IMG]
Its name is "killer of flies". Would you try such a mushroom?
Look at this beautiful mushroom! Do you like it?
It's the pale grebe. It's a good name, isn't it? :) It's possible to kill several persons by one mushroom only. There is an idiom In Russian "you looks like a pale grebe". Those things every Russian listens from his childhood. As a result (I looked on the Internet) in the Omsk region over the past three years, no one died because of mushrooms. Though million persons collect them every summer. Deaths happen rare but usual poisonings occur yet. There are big number of idiots in every nation. Russians are not an exclusion. Some of them try such mushrooms because they are hallucinogenic. In Russian fairy tales witches eat such mushrooms usually. If we see a man that has strange behaviour we ask him: did you eat fly agarics too much?

So, I am not recommend to you to collect them, but I recommend to visit Russia and try them in a good restaurant :)

It's a modest dinner of the Siberian scientist. I bought these two fishes. I bought these two alive fishes...
I bought Parmigiano Reggiano and simple smoked cheeses. I bought Chardonnay. A pretty woman cooked the red salad and fishes. You can see a result :)

Do you know what is "varenye"? I tried to translate this term. A most close mean is "jam". But... "varenye" is not jam. Why? Hm... Do you know what is "strawberry"? Don't hurry saying "yes" :) They collect strawberry in June, There is no any strawberry in August. When I had been in the USA I found out that strawberry crunches as a cucumber. And it has the same taste. Believe me, it isn't a strawberry. Maybe it's a red cucumber, but not strawberry.

You can find real strawberry in the Siberian forest.
    You collect a full bucket
    [IMG]
and boil it in sugar. Next, you can invite someone for tea drinking with strawberry varenye. You and your guests never forget its delicious aroma.
