“Trump supporters, and eventually Trump himself, coopted it as a derogatory epithet for mainstream news sites whose political coverage they found to be flawed or biased,” complains Slate magazine. It is now “a handy cudgel for people who want to criticize the media for a wide range of failings.”

The use of the phrase “fake news” has risen 365 percent since 2016.

“Fake news,” says the journalism site Poynter, “has been weaponized by politicians.” George Washington University professor Nikki Usher observed, “The speed with which the term became polarized and in fact a rhetorical weapon illustrates how efficient the conservative media machine has become.”

John Lloyd, a senior research fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford, laments its use. It portrays the mainstream media “as the tool of an arrogant, out-of-touch elite, who use that tool to keep down the marginalized.”
https://stream.org/the-left-is-trying-to-eliminate-the-phrase-fake-news/ This very long article documents the change in the term fake news. It describes how liberals started it to belittle conservative media. Then it details how conservatives and Trump himself co opted the term and turned it against its creators. Trump targeted CNN, The NY Times and Washington Post for the term as they are fake news. Then they talk about the whine fest on the left and how Facebook no longer uses the term.

And then there are the fake news msm Fact Checkers who use unscientific methodology based on their own bias to falsely label alternative media as “questionable” or “pseudoscience” or “hate”. They rate sites too pro Trump or too conservative as questionable propaganda, sites that are Biblical literalists, believe in creation, the flood, Angels, or don’t tow the line on msm climate change as pseudoscience and they use the terrorist inspiring bigots at the hate group SPLC for their defamatory hate group list. The site I seeded this article from is labeled pseudoscience because their religion section believes in angels and creation. The site MBFC is the worst fraud of all these groups and they openly brag about how many others use their info to censor conservative and Christian sites in their own operations. It’s great that the term fake news is boomeranging back on outfits in the msm.

The problem is that the extend and multiple ways the term “fake news” has been used of late has rendered it all but meaningless. When it was initially coined (in this context at least), it had a specific meaning, referring exclusively to manufactured stories created for satire websites which were then picked up and repeated by mainstream media without confirming their accuracy. That was a specific problem during the 2016 US election and while it always has and always will happen, it seems to have settled down a little for now.

The phrase “fake news” then morphed in to a term for “Anything I disagree with!”. There has always been plenty of spin, bias and misinformation in the media, especially around political stories, though much of that reflect the spin, bias and misinformation within politics itself. The problem is that there is also plenty of legitimate information and stories that might have plenty of spin within them but a core of truth that should be extracted and addressed.

The common use of the phrase is to dismiss entire stories, entire organisations or the entire industry as a whole though and that is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. This also shows how ridiculous the use of the phrase has become. How can the MSM be fake news? The might produce (some) fake news but saying they are fake news is just irrational. There is also the great irony that it is most commonly used by politicians who are no less guilty of the same misinformation and spin and even the promoting of “fake news” by the traditional definition. Today “fake news” will most often be used to dismiss “true news” the politicians don’t want people to believe.

Trump coopted a term the left first used, and the left hate that he's more influential in using the term than they were. Its even worse when the MSM keep showing how they have an agenda and their bias fronts partial stories and framed in a way that is anti-right. The left started the Obama birth certificate narrative, and Trump picked it up and made it more believable. The left hate Trump for Trump takes what the left starts and makes it more popular.

There is a movement underway to teach consumers to be aware of fake news and check for themselves.

The Donald coined the 'fake news' expression. It'll probably be his Presidential legacy.

    That is not true.

In fact, the term "fake news" surfaced during the 2016 presidential election.

Shortly after the political conventions were over, social media was flooded with fake news websites.

They were sites with domain names like ABC.CO, which were designed to look like the real thing, Almost all of them were one or two pages doeep and promoted completely fictional stories, promoted racial divide, and echoed the narrow jingistic Archie Bunker themes of the Trump campaign.

Some origninated in teh United States. But most originated in Eastern Europe, and have since been identified as instruments of the Russians cyber attacks against the US.

It was a change, and it coincided with the evident Russian decision to back Trump covertly.

    http://www.tampabay.com/news/politi...ake-news-with-politifact-as-a-partner/2306498

But once the term entered the national conversation, Trump appropriated it and turned it on its head.

He knew what he was doing. His audience was already primed.

After being told by the likes of Roger Ailes and Rush Limbaugh to disregard anything outside the right wing echo chamber, they glommed onto the Trump version of the "fake news" meme, and are still bellowing it at the top of their lungs.

This is an audience that is actually enthusiastic about being lied to. Trump lies to them constantly. Right wing media has done it for decades.

The audience never punishes the liars who tell them lies they want to believe. They come right back for more.

Indeed, as we see on this thread, they will even make stuff up on their own and spew it out to support their false claims.

Trump started his fake "war" on media by attacking Fox Noise. He did that because Fox, his most loyal accolade, was the least likely choice for Trumpian wrath, and thus, would serve to cow the rest of cable TV media.

After a while, he switched to CNN. Fox had fallen into line, and people whould just laugh if he attacked MSNBC.

Trump loves media, dispite the noise.

Trump's worst day will be the day he goes on one of his bellowing rants, and no one cares.

Yes, but it wasn't "the left" who coined the phrase. It was the real media outlets who were being faked that did.

A lot of these fake news sites, including the aforemention ABC.co website, were gleefully parrotted by Trump supporters here on this forum.

Indeed, Trumpsters flooded this forum with fake news links, and links to fake sites from fake organizations which all peddled variations of the racism, xenophobia, and fear mongering that are cores of the message that both the Russian cyber attacks and the Trump campaign promoted.

Here is a typical example of how the Russians and right wing media broadcast fake news to a gullible and willing audience.

    https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/president-obama-planning-coup-president-trump/story?id=45665594

This is exactly how the Russians cyber attacks work. Social media, not advertising, is the vehicle for spreading this stuff.

The ABC.com fake website wasn't the first fake news website that I saw parroted on this forum. It was the most obvious one. It took less than thirty seconds of google search to find out that it was an absurd fake.

But neither the Trump supporters who posted links to it as factual, nor the ones who liked, shared, and elaborted on the lies ever bothered to do that.

And, as you can see every day, they still don't.

The left is dependent upon fake new to make constant attacks on our great President. They just aren’t used to a Republican fighting back.

It will happen to his Presidency. I have very little doubt of that at this point.

Trump has reduced his Presidency to virtual irrelevance. His is being ignored, and worked around on the world stage. He's a global joke. Feared because a very irresponsible and casually reckless person has so much power. Distrusted for the obvious reasons.

He now has little or no leverage in Congress, having suffered the biggest legislative defeat that any sitting President has suffered in a long time. His own party deserted him, and may well do it again very shortly.

He'll bluster and strut his way through the next two years. He blustered about causing a constitional crisis as a way of distracting his audience from his epic display of incompetence of the last two months, and getting everyone to look at him. Then, all he did was his rally schtick, and just lied for the sake of lying about everything and anything.... It was a clown show, put on by a fool with all the gravitas of a professional wrestler.

When that show is all over, Trump will be the special guest of every televangelist, and every crackpot right wing website with a video feed, and he'll shake the money tree and pocket most of the nickels and dimes that all the Archie Bunkers out there in MAGAville throw at him.

He knows that will work. Ben Carson made out pretty well on the same play.

The left used the term to describe "news" that was actually fake: The National Enquirer, InfoWars, "My inauguration crowd size was bigger than Obama's", etc. Trump and his group have used it as a reactive phrase to any news they don't like, regardless of its truth content.

The 'Conservative media machine', ROFL. I just find it funny how Liberals promote the greatest form of censorship in today's America, while whining about a 'conservative media machine' that doesn't exist. And no, the one who popularized that phrase was Secretary Clinton. It's not anyone's fault but their own that Trump called THEM fake.

If in fact they could try being more honest and modest, they'd have more support. But honesty and modesty lack a lot of the shabang these money-droning bastards are looking for.

They're trying to run away from it because they keep getting burned. They see the country as this incredibly bad place where their precious "minorities" (a term that is as fake as msnbc) are being hunted down like rabid dogs, so every time something pops up that sounds like it fits in with their "the country is evil!" narrative, they run with it.

and of course, they get burned every time because they live in a fake reality.
