I want them to assimilate an acceptance of equality under the law, follow the law and be self sufficient.

    That is all.

seems quite obvious to me...if either of us were to move to some of these socially backward countries we'd be expected to follow their socially horrific behaviour or face serious consequences for openly defying their customs...so why shouldn't we expect the same...if you move to sweden, become a swede, don't go there thinking you're going to establish your own mini culture if that's the case stay where you are, we don't want you...

my family came to Canada and became Canadians, my wife's family came from China and became Canadians, we're as Canadian as any family who has been here for generations...

I got very annoyed when recently I saw immigrant parents protesting our public schools sex education program as too permissive...we're trying to improve our society and here are these backward buttholes trying to drag us back to their level of ignorance and social suppression, if they don't like our progressive education system then they can go back to where they came from...don't come here thinking you can make us like you, come here to be like us...

What do you expect from immigrants?

I would want them to not... immigrate. The planet is full, stay where you are. If things are not great; fix them.

If people must immigrate, and I assume we are talking about coming to the US, then I would expect assimilation. There is nothing wrong with holding onto one's heritage, embracing one's ethnicity, sharing one's cultural background. But if you come to America then become an American. Worship how you want in your religious facility, dress how you want at home, speak with your family in any language you choose. But when you go out in public, when you go to a job, dress like an American and speak English.

    Just my opinion.

From living in south florida where the majority or adult head of households are foreign born the slow lost of other languages is sadly true.

That's what happens most of the time, just as with previous waves of immigrants.

As a practical matter, first generation parents stress the importance of English for their children. By the second generation something like 98% speak English only in the home. Same as it ever was.

Maybe you should try. The above is a ridiculous statement.

Not at all. The Chinese diaspora has held onto language for hundreds of years. Only in Indonesia was it lost (via force during the 1960's 'cleansing', which outlawed the speaking or writing of Chinese languages).

Chinese immigrants to the US follow the same general pattern of assimilation as other immigrant groups have.

Nope. Same as other immigrant groups.

In fact, first generation immigrant kids from China often ridicule their American born counterparts and consider them American rather than Chinese, which is of course true. There are a lot of awkward family get-togethers where the kids born in America and the new arrival youngsters have a great deal of difficulty communicating with one another. Your impression about this is probably due to the fact that there are often new immigrants arriving in Chinese enclaves all the time. The new arrivals and of course are starting out with fewer language skills. These immigrant groups are following the same basic pattern.

You seem to be anti-intellectual. What's wrong with speaking another language besides english?

BTW you might be surprished to learn which immigrants learn english the quickest.
