So, Trump was proud to shut down the government for thirty-five days because his "big, beautiful wall!" that he repeatedly promised Mexico would pay for is being built?

Translation: The democrats refused to fund the walls that the Border Patrol says it needs.

Most of the gerrymandering takes place by Democrats in the most populous states like California, New York and Illinois.

Illinois 4th Congressional District is the winner to give non citizens (illegal aliens) representation in Congress.

Until President Trump found a Mexican who would pay for the wall (El Chapo) and the Democrats had another meltdown and it seems it's the Democrats who don't want Mexico paying for the wall.

    Maybe it's just obstructionism ?

It is unprecedented specifically because Congress already approved a SPECIFIC amount of funding for the wall. Trump did not like that limitation and then declared a national emergency to get more funds.

There is not a single instance in the previous 59 where such took place.

Except the law says funding must come from military construction budgets and be built by the military. None of the aforementioned can be used.
So no new buildings providing security for our people in war zones, no new housing for our soldiers at home, forget corps of engineers help in disaster sites... For a wall that provides not one bit of security.

The supremacy clause has nothing whatsoever to do with your beloved BLOTUS trying to CIRCUMVENT the Constitutional powers of Congress.

I can only comment that I'm sick in my heart that my state, Colorado, has joined in this suit. But it's no surprise... our state has been subjected to more and more in-migration from California since the 1990's, and now we've become a "Blue" state.

I've never been in favor of "the Wall", per se, but I'm staunchly in favor of airtight border security. We won't have border security, and we can just add that the long list of things this country so desperately NEEDS, but won't get... along with real tax reform, sane foreign policies, and the practice of using welfare handouts to buy votes. We've been on this "Highway to Hell" for DECADES, under both political parties, and the destination is now in sight....

The SCOTUS said the President has the authority to act in cases expressly or implicitly authorized by the Constitution or an act of Congress. Congress created the National Emergencies Act, and defined 137 emergencies....including to authorizing and constructing military construction projects and using any existing defense appropriations for such military constructions...such as barriers on the southern border

Military Construction Projects are very well defined in the Statute. The wall does not fall within that definition.

There is no war zone, there is no military base, and the structure will be a civilian structure (permanently manned by civilians).

He had the authority...just not the funding for that specific project. He didn't want to have to divert other funds, or have to Declare a National Emergeny. He was hoping for the Dems to be willing to compromise.

Remember then - those powers stay with the office, and the next Democrat can use your "using his judgement" line ... or will you be a hypocrite and suddenly change your mind?

There is no requirment it be a war zone or military base. The law allows the construction to simply support the armed services...in case you didn't noticed we have the military on the border...and every President since W. has had to send the military there. https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/10/2808

The project would support the armed services, given the fact they are there, and have been for years.

Take a look at what Obama declared National Emergencies - all with the blessings of Congress - none appropriating funds earmarked for other uses.
In fact, 12 of the emergency declarations didn't cost a dime - they were sanctions against countries and individuals financing terrorism.

Trump used it twice previously as well.

But this is the first time in US history where a President sought funds for a specific project from Congress, got denied, and then declared a national emergency in order to get more funds.

Cool...but the National Emergency Act isn't limited to that. Obama sent troops to the border, and didn't give them the proper aid to secure it....Trump is...because the Dems continue not to support the military with proper funding

Trump picked up enough support in the Senate to keep his nominations flowing after 2020.

And as far as the shutdown goes, Trump wanted the American people to observed and also absorb the differences between his mission and the people who want open borders and an endless flow of illicit drugs.

Why do people keep saying that? The Dems offered over $5 billion in border security funds back in December. The operative words being "border security". Improved human resources like judges and border agents, improved screening facilities, more coast guard funding, you know, things that actually improve border security unlike a wall that does not.

And Trump is trying to shift money from the Department of Defense which has $110 billion in deferred maintenance past due that needs to be completed to protect the safety of our troops ... Trump is not supporting our troops.

they specifically would fund the needed barriers to help protect our military on the border.

If you build a wall you will need less judges, Border Patrol agents and screening facilities.
