Don't you think a lot of Republicans would join with the Democrats to vote to repeal the act? Heh, the truth is Democrats would never repeal it. They love it!

Yet, they have never done so. So yes, one would have to think they wouldn't. But now, a new precedent may be set.
Once power is given, it never gets taken away.

Im not opposed to taking some defense budget to improve the nation.

We coulda built the wall, housed the homeless and probably colonized Mars if we'd stayed out of Afghanistan.

There are no rules any more. Libs have taught us: get away with whatever you can.

It all began with the killer (Ted Kennedy) borking Judge Bork.

Congress will NEVER tighten the border. We would be here a thousand years still waiting for Congress to do something.

It's worse than doing nothing. They're trying to undermine existing law.

Why? Did Republicans, or Democrats object to the 18 times Bush and Obama declared a "National Emergency," some of which were dubious at best? if democrats don't like the law they implemented in 1976, then they should try to change it!

Because diarrhea from the swine flu is a real national emergency.

Diarrhea comes out of the shithole.

We don't want to see America becoming a shithole country.

So President Obama declared a national emergency in response to diarrhea.

So you'l be perfectly fine when we take money from the FB-35 to require that all new guns sold to consumers be "smart" (that is, unable be used by anyone but their registered owners.). Or when we take money from Foreign Aid to Israel's Military to clean up Flint 's water supply, or take money from the Wall to cure cancer.

Donald Trump is not the first president of the united states to declare a national emergency on one matter or another. He will most certainly not be the last. Barack Obama declared two national emergencies during his tenure, so the legal precedent has existed for a very long time.

If such is not supported, call for legislation that puts a permanent end to the powers and authorities of the president of the united states to declare national emergencies. If the office is gaining too much power, support something meaningful to address the problem rather than just whining about it.

Funny, none of you Chicken Littles minded when Obama said this. Maybe you should have been worried about his successors doing the same thing?

I agree 100%. I was against Obama's usurpation of congress in the DACA business and this is no better. Congress has needed to rein in presidential power for decades.

Except in this case Congress is trying to prevent the enforcement of existing Congressional law.

The Democrats will do it anyway, regardless of what Trump does. And you will applaud.

Your first example makes no sense since the technology isn't there for that sort of smart weaponry, nor would there be a legal basis to require them under the act. Your second example at least makes some sense, but Congress, under the law, can either do a joint resolution or veto proof vote to undo the emergency.

Or you can just repeal the act all together like I suggested.

So if you want a Democratic President to take money from Israel for any reason, fine! I'll grab the popcorn! Knock yourself out.

Working and practical smart guns have been available for some years and New Jersey was going to pass laws requiring them until the NRA stepped in. The NRA organizes boycotts, (documented) and death threat campaigns (undocumented but difficult to figure where else they get the addresses from) against shops that even plan to sell them. Such guns would shield the public and owners from most of the threat posed by stolen guns but they would also keep corrupt gun shop owners from the highly illegal but amazingly lucrative business of wholesales to gangs, so the NRA is not going to allow you to have one, no matter how much you want to pay..

The National Emergencies Act doesn't allow you to violate statutory law or the constitution. So you can take that to a gun control thread. This thread isn't about your authoritarian dreams.

Except for the fact that they do not. Such firearms do not exist, nor have they been proven as reliable as normal firearms. The very fact law enforcement and the military in the united states wishes to be exempted from such firearms demonstrates that they are not viable technology, and thus should not be mandated for anything.

Which is not a nefarious act.

Unless there is hard evidence that such threats were indeed real, and indeed committed by confirmed NRA members, it is nothing more than speculation.

If the firearm can be stolen, so can the authorization device that enables it to be operated by the legal owner. Therefore such is not a legitimate defense of such an unproven, unreliable technology that not even law enforcement will use.

So you expect people to take your threat seriously?

    Dang, that's a bit desperate.

I didn't always agree with McConnell, but I respected him. That all changed when Trump became President. He is now merely a Trump lackey. On rare occasions he has been known to be critical of Trump, but that is it. He never does anything about it. When all is said and done, he backs Trump no matter how stupid Trump is. For example, he changed his mind and backs Trump in his effort to usurp an important fundamental power from Congress, control of appropriations. That I clearly do not understand and McConnell never explains himself.

What I don't understand is how foolish McConnell is when it comes to party loyalty. Leading up to the 2018 mid-terms, all Trump talked about what his wall and the "invasion" from Central America, and he declared the election a referendum of him. The GOP lost 40 seats and control of the House. The GOP also lost several state houses and state legislatures.

Why does he back Trump? Trump is a loser. Not even his supporters can defend him.

Trump is abusing the National Emergencies Act. A President doesn't deal with a humanitarian crisis by building a wall. A President doesn't deal with refugees by building a wall.

Trump is attempting to usurp a fundamental power of Congress, the power of appropriating funds. That power belongs strictly with Congress. Congress denied Trump the money he wanted for his wall. Trump is creating a Constitution crisis by going around Congress to obtain that money.

This is not about the National Emergencies Act itself. Nor is about the authority of the President to declare a national emergency. This is about Trump's attack on the Separations of Powers principle contained in our Constitution.

I take it you agree with Trump. Creating a Constitutional crisis because he can't get his way is a great idea.

Why it is so good that future liberal Presidents will use the precedent set to advance their liberal agenda like Medicare for all, banning assault weapons, the green new deal, and a free college education.

    Great idea, there, sport.

What crisis? The one in the imagination of the people who invented it for you?

The precedent meme only serves to show how uninformed and out of touch liberal progressives are.
