Modern combat will be different, but there will be plenty of proven tactics used.

With the advent of the mini-ball, war was modernized as both the Union and South adopted the way U.S. Marines have always fought, the skirmish line.

The American Civil War was the first modern war to be fought.

Soon all armies in the world would adopt the skirmish line.

 

No. That's false. The majority of battles in the Civil War, the combatants did not fight in skirmish order. They fought in massed lines. And for good reason - the firing rate of the rifle musket wasn't enough to stop a determined cavalry charge if the troops were spread out.

The first modern war was the Franco-Prussian War 5 years later.
