    1. Do cigarettes self-ignite? Remember, there were no workers at the site when the fire started.
    2. Don't historical sites like this 850 year cathedral have a super-duper fire alarm and a sophisticated emergency plan? How do you start a fire without the whole neighborhood knowing about it and sprinklers going off?

A spark can smolder in the dust for a long time until it actually bursts into flame, so sparks from welding might have landed in the attic a long time before the workers departed.

I know it's not as exciting as muslim terrorists, but its logical.

Muslim terrorists have commited several atrocities particularly in Paris, why not another one?
    Occam's razor.
Sorry, I don't buy the welding theory. It's much more easier to use a gas can and a lighter or some kind of timer-igniton or a remote controlled fire starter. The fire will take care of the tracks.

    Let’s assume your honestly curious.

    1. We had a large commercial fire in my district last year that was started by an errant cigarette butt that smoldered for almost 3 hours before it went from incipient to growth. (Fire behavior: incipient - growth - fully involved - decay) Cigarettes start fires all the time. People are careless with them. French people smoke, A LOT. It’s plausible. Exactly the same problem with welding sparks. These are small hot objects that can cause ignition if they land in the right material under the right conditions. There are a few things that will self-combust. One of them being linseed oil and rags in a bucket; something you’d be *very* likely to find in art restoration AND construction sites. Zero evidence of cigarettes of linseed oil that I know of at Notre Dame.

    2. Yes, a sprinkler system with either a pre-pressurized system or a standpipe FDC would have been awesome. Clearly didn’t exist there. I’m sure there would have been considerations about how much damage a sprinkler system would have done if it had malfunctioned or something... obviously now they wish it had had one. Some of the plumbing and pressure issues to install one at a place like ND would have been monumental, but again in hindsight...

Please feel free to ask away.

Statistically Occam’s razor would say the exact opposite. That’s your own bias right there.

    Fair enough.
All these centuries people knew how to protect it from fire, even when all light inside was candles, and now suddenly they don't. I don't buy this.

Saint Denis basilica was degraded by a muslim. Saint Sulpice church was burn in a criminal way recently. We don't know if it's a muslim or far left activist.

People which pretend that Notre Dame was a muslim attack lies, people which pretend it's an accident lies aswell. But accident or no accident, we know that many muslims were delighted by that.

Or a far right activist. The truth it that practically all recent church vandalism has been committed by none of the above, but by anarchists.

Feel free to point your finger (of speculation) at any direction you want though.

Well, no the saint denis basilisca was degrated by a pakistani.
And the far right in France is catholic, the pagan/atheist far right is deeply bounded with the french legacy.

    Oh then it's Putin?

    Conspiracy theories come and go,
and yet with us it can't be so.
It's Putin here, it's Russia there,
It's what we're told you know?

The years will come and years will pass,
but this one's sure to last and last,
for Russia must remain a foe.
That's what we're told you know? - Jeannette

Conspiracy theories are your reality, but the one real conspiracy we as a nation face, the one orchestrated by a hostile foreign power to disrupt our society, is the one, and only one, you actually don't believe.

Because it is the only one that is in any way anti-Russia and pro-USA. All the others? The ones with no evidence? The ones that are actually highly improbable and downright silly? You love and embrace them, because they all align with your pro-Russia, anti-USA worldview.

ISIS disrespects historical edifices. They destroyed many of the monuments in Palmyra and had it wired to blow it all up, but if I recall correctly someone got whiff of it so it wasn't managed. Moscow sent experts later to restore whatever they could.

As a matter of fact they are now running against time to take digital photos of all the manuscripts in Saint Catherine's Monastery in Sinai which dates back to the time of Constantine, not knowing when it will be destroyed. So what makes anyone think that ISIS would not blow up Notre Dame Cathedral? When I say running against time I mean running against time. The manuscripts there are so extensive, that they estimate it will take 10 years.

The only reason Saint Catherine survived when so many thousands of monasteries didn't, is because Mohamed visited it - and I think he gave it his blessing, but I'm not sure.

Have we figured this out yet?

Was it The Judean People's Front, or The People's Front of Judea?

    Nice.

That was actually funny. An anti-Orange Man meme that was actually funny.

I don't doubt for a second that those Islamic State pigs would blow up or otherwise damage a cathedral if they could, provided they could actually make it work.

But that is not reason enough to accuse them of this. Authorities in France have not found evidence so far of foul play. It appears to be related to renovation work. Obviously there is no good reason to accuse them of lying about this, either.

The fire started on the roof.

There were no construction workers up there that day.

The wood frame is pretty much encased by lead, so it would have taken a fairly big fire to begin with to be able to start the roof on fire.

A cigarette and a wad of paper would not have been enough to start solid oak beams on fire. (I don't know if you've ever tried to start a solid wood log on fire, it takes more than just a little bit of flame)

France is very dependent economically on Qatar - so what's a few burnt churches?

I doubt they are anxious to look for it.
They are rushing out to reassure the public it was an accident, even though they have had virtually no time so far to conduct any sort of real investigation.

The authorities know as well as everyone else does the religion of the culprits and why the fire was likely set, if it was not accidental.
