California moves to let felons serve on juries

California has the largest population of illegal alien criminals that infest the state more than any other state by far.

Soooooo there's that...

 

I keep hearing once a felon has "paid his debt".... Most felonys come with jail time AND a huge fine. The debt isn't paid until the ENTIRE debt is paid.

 

This is a huge win for the Criminal Defense Bar in California.

 

I'm actually an advocate of if you served your time, you should have your rights restored. That includes the right to vote, the right to defend yourself and the right to do your civic duty.

 

I wouldn't say I'm an advocate of any of those things but I'm certainly not objectionable to them. If that makes sense. But I tend not to take a really strong stance on many issues.

I know a couple ex-felons that just had one bad night / bad weekend many years ago that are really good people, they deserve have their past no longer haunt them.

Unfortunately I also know a more that were repetitive criminals and I'm kind of a three strikes you're out kind of person, sadly in a couple of the cases it's more like seven strikes you're out.

I'm of two minds as to whether or not they should serve on a jury because in one respect it's part of your civic duty. But I also have concerns that there would be a good percentage that would be biased because of their past experience incarcerated. May be willing to set somebody free because they don't want them to have to experience the same thing?

Not sure if that's anecdotal I'm just spitballing.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have low level past felons on juries, those who had spent less than 2 years in prison?
Might give the jury another perspective.
Or at least be there as an advisory role in the jury room, even if they're not given a vote.

 

I think it's more done to make felons have to go through the process and not get a free pass out of jury duty, as in most case they will never actually be selected

 

If they served their time, then sure, let them serve. They're going to be treated no differently than anyone. If you believe in the 2A, a defense attorney for a home invasion manslaughter case isn't going to want you on the jury when they know you're going to side with the home owner, for example. Its all a game.

Former felons might be more sympathetic or might even be less sympathetic because they did their time for being stupid and guyX deserves it too, ect.

As a father, I can never be okay with violent criminals being allowed to carry guns or allowing sex offenders to open a day care center. The rate of recidivism shows that they are no better off when they leave prison.

 

Well you don’t have a right to open a day care center, so that’s a different issue.

 

That conflicts with your prior statement. If they served their time, why not?

A felon served his time for murder and you support his right to carry a gun?

 

Owning a weapon is more of a constitutional right than the right to open a daycare center, but I get your point. In that instance, society's obligation to protect kids trump's a sex-offender's right to become a teacher, counselor, operate a private daycare, etc.
