Neither can China, and is unlikely to ever be able to. Not that they want to, since they have more than enough people to take care of already, besides, it won't be necessary. We are already bankrupting ourselves with this paranoid fantasy that says we have to spend more on our military than something like the next 6 biggest militaries in the world combined.

China's military is trying to defend itself, mainly against us. They have a big military because they have a lot of people but they have very little way of projecting power and don't seem to be building any . Not that they could ever rival ours in that area anyway for about a century.

 

I disagree on China's future but I do agree with our headlong race toward bankruptcy.

 

China is going to be becoming much more prosperous but, assuming Trump loses and cannot kill us, so will we. We might, if we're REALLY luckier than we deserve to be, head off bankruptcy by spending less on our military and they might increase theirs, but even so I don't see them as being able to afford any serious military threat to us for a very long time. And WHY would they want to? We are their biggest market, really a cash cow for them and they are going to have their hands full with 2 billion people? Why do they want 400 million more, especially as ornery as us and as rich if left alone? Goose with Golden Egg anyone?

 

The majority of government spending is social spending. I'm for less military but I'm way way way more for less social spending.

 

Why do you want to neglect the old and the sick? Because that is the vast majority of social spending. The poor are a much smaller group and the "able-bodied poor" are largely a conservative myth, made up mainly of "some guy somebody saw buying lobster and filet mignon with food stamps during working hours" or suchlike.

I take a backseat to nobody in saying that we should pay our soldiers what they deserve, which is a lot more than they are getting. But when I note we have TWELVE aircraft carrier GROUPS and are building two more so we can carry billion dollar jets that nobody likes to fight hill bandits driving used Toyota trucks in landlocked countries I just want to scream

You put words in my mouth. I said none of these things. I said federal government has no business spending on social programs. Why? Because the country was founded on the concept of equality, not income redistribution. I'm all for taking care of the poor who can't work or the sick. I think it should be handled in the private sector. If the private sector won't provide enough, then the state governments could take up such spending. Those who don't like the spending can move to another state. In other words competition is good. Federal government is not the place to do it. It really has to focus on equality.

You may recall that we agree on the military. Don't forget that military personnel have access to free housing, clothing, food, transportation. when I left the military had some savings. But federal government way to big and incompetent. We need far less of it.

 

China only wants to make money so their people can have a good life....they are not militaristic. If they were, they would have invaded Taiwan long ago. Don't try to make an enemy out of a potential friend. We have far more to gain from working with them then against them.

 

Russians like to claim China is a threat to the US. China doesn’t even have logistical means to wage war with us. But they CAN beat the crap out of Russia! All they need to do is cross the border into empty Russia.

 

I guess that explains why they are building military islands in the S China Sea and why they are screwing us economically. Working with them is fine as long as it is on our terms.

 

They are not screwing us economically, they are competing with the world and winning in order to lift their own people out of poverty. As for the islands, its a land grab. Have you seen the island? Very small, certainly no threat to us at all.
